To check on-device AI support, identify the exact phone model and model number, install its latest operating-system and vendor-interface update, then match that combination against the manufacturer’s current eligibility list. Also verify RAM, system-on-chip (SoC), free storage, language, region and account requirements. Finally, inspect the individual AI feature’s processing setting and test it with connectivity restricted. Installing an AI app proves only that the app is compatible; it does not prove that advanced models run locally on your phone.
Support is feature-specific. A phone may process translation or message suggestions locally while sending image editing or summarization to a cloud service. The checks below separate hardware eligibility, software gates and actual processing behavior.
What does “on-device AI” mean?
On-device AI runs at least part of an AI model on the phone’s processor instead of sending every input to a remote server. Local processing can reduce latency, work without a data connection and keep eligible data on the device. It also consumes battery, storage and processing capacity, so manufacturers limit it to particular models and features.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCloud-assisted AI sends data to the vendor’s servers, sometimes after a local pre-processing step. A feature can therefore be described as “AI” without being fully local. Treat “on-device,” “hybrid” and “cloud” as separate processing modes, and check the mode for the specific feature you plan to use.

How do I identify the exact phone that must be checked?
Record the complete model name, model number, operating-system version, vendor interface version, RAM and available storage. A family label such as “Pro,” “Ultra” or “Plus” is not precise enough because two models in the same family can have different processors, memory or eligibility.
iPhone
Open Settings > General > About and note the model name, model number and iOS version. If the model number initially appears as a part number, tap it to reveal the hardware model identifier. Record the available storage shown in the iPhone’s storage settings as well; AI model downloads can require several gigabytes.
Android phones
Open Settings > About phone (or About device) and record the model name, model number and Android version. Also note the vendor interface, such as Samsung One UI, under Software information. RAM and storage may appear on the same page or under Device care, Storage or a similarly named menu. Use the hardware model code, not only the retail name printed on the box.

Why the model number matters
Regional variants can use different SoCs, modem configurations or memory capacities while sharing a commercial name. Eligibility lists are usually written for the exact model or a narrowly defined series. Save a screenshot of the About page before checking a support list so you can compare every character accurately.
What should I update before checking AI eligibility?
Install the newest update your phone offers before comparing it with a support list. AI capabilities can arrive through an operating-system release, a vendor interface update or a staged feature rollout, and an otherwise eligible phone can appear unsupported while it is running older software.
Samsung update path
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update (on some models it is labeled System updates).
- Choose Download and install, then tap Check for updates.
- Install the update, restart if requested and return to Settings > About phone > Software information to record the new One UI version.
Other phones
Use the system update screen in Settings and install every pending operating-system and vendor-service update. Keep the phone on power and Wi-Fi when a large update or AI model package is offered. If no update is available, record the version and continue; “up to date” means only that the manufacturer has offered no newer package for that device and region.
Which official eligibility lists cover Apple Intelligence, Gemini Intelligence and Galaxy AI?
Use the manufacturer’s current list for the exact model, then apply the additional software, language, storage and regional conditions. The three ecosystems do not use the same definition of eligibility.

| AI platform | Models or hardware conditions identified by current support documentation | Important non-hardware gates |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Intelligence | iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, plus iPhone 16 models or later | Supported operating system, free storage for downloaded models, matching device and Siri languages, and availability by language and region |
| Google Gemini Intelligence | Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip8 are named devices; Google also requires 12GB or more RAM, a qualified SoC, advanced on-device AI processing, current media capabilities and software performance benchmarks | Feature rollout, account state, language, region and the particular Gemini function being used |
| Samsung Galaxy AI | Compatible models listed by Samsung; One UI 6.1 or later is required | Model-by-model availability, language, region, account and whether a function is local or cloud-assisted |
These lists are time-sensitive. Recheck them after a major operating-system or interface release because manufacturers can add models, change language coverage or alter which functions require a server.
How can I check whether an iPhone supports Apple Intelligence?
Start with the exact model: Apple’s current support documentation lists iPhone 15 Pro models and iPhone 16 models or later. A non-Pro iPhone 15, for example, should not be assumed eligible merely because it carries the same generation number.
Step 1: verify hardware and software
- Confirm the model and model number in Settings > General > About.
- Install the latest iOS update offered under Settings > General > Software Update.
- Check free capacity under Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Apple’s support documentation describes model-download requirements that vary by generation: earlier compatible devices may need about 7GB, while newer documentation specifies 8GB or up to 14GB depending on the device.
Step 2: check language and region
The iPhone’s device language and Siri language must be among the languages supported for Apple Intelligence, and availability can differ by country or region. Set both languages deliberately rather than assuming that an otherwise eligible model will expose every feature in every locale. A managed account, parental restriction or staged rollout can also delay the feature.
Step 3: look for the feature controls
After updating, search Settings for the Apple Intelligence controls and follow the setup prompts. If the phone asks to download models, leave adequate free storage and keep it connected to power and Wi-Fi. The presence of a download prompt is evidence that the service is being provisioned, not proof that every Apple Intelligence action is processed locally.

Test the exact writing, notification, image or assistant feature you care about. Read its explanation for any server requirement and repeat the test after temporarily disabling mobile data and Wi-Fi. If the function becomes unavailable, changes behavior or asks for a connection, classify it as cloud-dependent or hybrid rather than fully on-device.
Can my Android phone run Gemini Nano or Gemini Intelligence?
Separate the broad Gemini mobile app from Google’s more demanding Gemini Intelligence features. Google’s basic Gemini app requirement is Android 9 or later with at least 2GB of RAM on Android, but that threshold does not show that advanced Gemini tasks or Gemini Nano run locally.
Advanced Gemini Intelligence checks
- Confirm that the exact model appears in Google’s current Gemini Intelligence device list.
- Verify at least 12GB of RAM, a qualified SoC, advanced on-device AI processing, current media-processing capabilities and the required software performance benchmarks.
- Check language, country, account and staged-rollout requirements for the specific feature.
The support page names Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip8. Do not generalize that list to every Pixel or Galaxy device, and do not infer local processing from the ability to install the Gemini app.

How to test a Gemini feature
- Update Android and Google system components.
- Open the Gemini feature’s information or settings panel and look for wording about on-device processing, downloaded models or network access.
- Run a short, repeatable task while online, then repeat it with Wi-Fi and mobile data disabled.
- Compare the result, response time and available controls. If the task fails, falls back to a different mode or requests connectivity, it is not verified as local on that phone.
How do I know whether Galaxy AI is running on my Samsung phone?
Samsung requires One UI 6.1 or later on compatible models and publishes model-by-model Galaxy AI lists. Match your exact model and One UI version first; a phone running an older interface can be excluded even when its hardware is otherwise similar.

Check the Galaxy AI menu
- Open Settings.
- Tap Galaxy AI.
- Look for the control labeled Process data only on device and review the explanation for each feature.
Samsung identifies translation, time and weather ambient wallpapers, and some Google Messages assistance as examples of on-device processing. It also states that many other functions, including auto-formatting, auto-summarizing, auto-correction and image editing, may use cloud processing. The menu is therefore a feature-level control, not a guarantee that the entire Galaxy AI suite is local.
What the device-only switch tells you
Enable the device-only option when you want the strictest local-processing test. If a function disappears or becomes limited, that behavior indicates the function depends on a server for part of its operation. If it continues to work, verify the feature’s own documentation because a successful offline action can still include locally stored data, precomputed results or a reduced model.
Translation is not a blanket rule
Samsung says, “Most translations are handled on the device itself.” “Most” matters: language pair, app, mode and software version can change the processing path. Check the language pack and the specific translation feature instead of assuming that every translation request is local.
Which requirements can block on-device AI even on an eligible model?
Hardware is only the first gate. Record each of the following before deciding that a feature is unsupported.
- Operating-system or UI version: an older iOS, Android build or One UI release can hide the feature.
- RAM and SoC: advanced local models need memory bandwidth and accelerator support; Google’s Gemini Intelligence documentation specifies 12GB or more RAM plus a qualified SoC.
- Free storage: downloaded models occupy local capacity. Apple documentation describes requirements ranging from about 7GB to 8GB or as much as 14GB depending on generation.
- Language: device, assistant and feature languages may need to match a supported combination.
- Region and country: regulatory, licensing or rollout differences can make a feature unavailable in one market.
- Account and permissions: a signed-in account, assistant permission, message access or cloud consent may be required even for a feature that has a local component.
- Staged rollout: vendors sometimes enable a feature gradually after the update reaches a phone.
- Connectivity policy: a vendor may require an initial download or occasional server check even when normal inference is local.
How can I prove that a feature is processed on the phone?
Use a documented control plus a controlled offline test. An icon, marketing label or fast response is not enough to establish local processing.
- Choose one named feature. Write down the exact task, app and language, such as message translation or a particular image-editing action.
- Read its processing documentation. Look for “on device,” “cloud,” “hybrid,” downloaded-model or network requirements. Do not extrapolate from another feature in the same suite.
- Enable device-only processing. Use Samsung’s Process data only on device control when available, or the equivalent control documented by the vendor.
- Prepare an offline test. Complete any required model download first, then turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data. Airplane mode can help, but recheck that Bluetooth or an automatic network connection has not restored access.
- Repeat the same input. Use identical text, image and settings so that the only changed variable is network access.
- Record the outcome. “Works unchanged” supports a local mode; “works with fewer options” indicates a hybrid or reduced local model; “fails or asks for a connection” indicates a cloud dependency.
- Restore normal connectivity and settings. Some features need a connection for updates, account verification or enhanced results even after local processing is confirmed.
This test demonstrates behavior under your current software and account conditions. It does not certify that every request, language or future version will use the same path.

What should I compare when choosing a phone for on-device AI?
Compare the complete processing setup rather than a single “AI” label. The following checklist keeps like-for-like comparisons honest.
| Comparison point | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model | Does this model number appear on the current eligibility list? | Family names can hide different processors, memory and regional variants. |
| RAM and SoC | Does the vendor state a minimum RAM amount or qualified chipset? | Local models need enough memory and accelerator capability; Google specifies 12GB+ RAM for Gemini Intelligence. |
| Software | Which iOS, Android or vendor UI version is required? | Features can be delivered through software and withheld from older builds. |
| Storage | How much free space remains after model downloads? | Apple documents model packages of about 7GB, 8GB or up to 14GB depending on generation. |
| Language and region | Are the device, assistant and feature languages supported in your country? | Eligibility can vary even when the hardware is identical. |
| Processing control | Can cloud processing be disabled for the feature? | A master switch may cover only some functions; feature-level documentation is decisive. |
| Offline behavior | Does the named task continue with networks disabled? | It provides a practical check of the current processing path. |
Why does an AI app install but still not run locally?
App compatibility is a low bar. A mobile app can run its interface on almost any recent phone while sending demanding inference to a server. The basic Gemini app, for example, supports Android 9 or later with 2GB of RAM, whereas Google’s advanced Gemini Intelligence requirements include 12GB or more, a qualified SoC and additional processing capabilities.

If only the basic chat interface works without a connection, that does not establish support for local summarization, image generation, transcription or other advanced tasks.
What should I do if the phone appears eligible but the AI option is missing?
Work through the gates in order rather than immediately replacing the phone.
- Recheck the model number. Compare the identifier in Settings with the list, including regional suffixes.
- Confirm the update. Install the latest offered OS and vendor UI release, then restart.
- Free storage. Remove or offload large files if the model-download prompt cannot complete; retain more than the stated package size so installation can unpack safely.
- Check language and region. Temporarily use a supported device and assistant language if the vendor documents that as a requirement, and verify country availability.
- Review account and permissions. Sign in to the required account and allow the assistant, microphone, messages or photos permissions requested by the feature.
- Wait for rollout. A staged release can reach otherwise eligible phones at different times.
- Test one feature offline. If the control appears but the task requires a connection, classify that task as cloud-dependent rather than treating the whole phone as unsupported.
If the model is absent from the vendor’s current list after these checks, do not infer eligibility from a similar model or from an app-store listing.
How do cloud and on-device modes affect privacy, speed and reliability?
Local processing generally keeps the input on the phone and can continue when a network is unavailable, but it may use more battery, require large model files and provide a smaller or slower model. Cloud processing can offer more capable models and frequent server-side improvements, but it sends some data off the device and depends on connectivity, account access and service availability.
Hybrid processing is common: a phone can perform an initial operation locally, call a server for a larger model, or use local processing for one language and cloud processing for another. Read the feature-specific privacy and processing description before entering sensitive text, images or recordings.

- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
How often should I recheck support?
Recheck after every major operating-system or vendor-interface update, after changing region or language, and whenever a manufacturer announces a new AI feature. Eligibility lists, model-download sizes, language coverage and processing defaults can change independently. Keep a note of the model number, software version and the exact feature tested so a later result can be compared with the original one.
What is the reliable decision rule?
Call a feature “supported on-device” only when all three conditions are true: the exact model and software meet the vendor’s eligibility rules; required storage, language, region and account gates are satisfied; and the named feature is documented as local or continues to work in a controlled offline test. If any condition is missing, describe the feature as unsupported, cloud-dependent or unverified rather than assuming that the phone’s AI branding answers the question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a factory reset make an unsupported phone run on-device AI?
No. A reset can clear corrupted settings or free storage, but it cannot add a missing SoC capability, increase physical RAM or place an absent model on the manufacturer’s eligibility list. Recheck updates and storage first; reset only after backing up data and exhausting software troubleshooting.
Does a faster 5G connection mean my AI is running locally?
No. A fast connection can make cloud responses feel immediate, while a local model can work with all radios disabled. The processing setting and repeatable offline test are more meaningful than network speed.
Can I use local AI while traveling in another country?
Sometimes. Downloaded local models may continue to work, but account checks, language availability, licensing and cloud-assisted portions can change by region. Test the specific feature before travel and keep a supported language and offline fallback where possible.
How much battery does on-device AI use?
Usage varies with the model, task, chipset, temperature and how often you run it; vendor eligibility pages do not provide a universal battery figure. Long sessions of transcription, image analysis or generation can consume noticeably more power than short text actions, so monitor your phone’s battery statistics during your own workload.
