To find out whether a Windows AI feature is affecting a game, compare the same game scene with that one feature enabled and disabled, and record frame times alongside GPU, CPU, memory, and NPU activity. An NPU reading by itself does not prove a gaming slowdown: look for a repeatable change in frame-time consistency that coincides with a resource spike or a change in GPU behavior.
You can do this with Task Manager, an available GPU overlay, and Windows’ per-game Graphics settings. Keep the game and its settings constant, restart it after each change, and run each test state more than once.
What should you measure to tell whether an AI feature is affecting a game?
Measure the game’s performance and the PC’s resource use at the same time. Average FPS is useful, but frame-time consistency matters too: a short hitch can feel disruptive even if the average frame rate barely changes. Compare repeated runs rather than relying on a single peak FPS number.

- Game performance: average FPS and a measure of frame-time consistency, such as frame-time variance or 1% lows.
- GPU: utilization, clock speed, and temperature.
- CPU: utilization.
- Memory: RAM and VRAM use.
- NPU: utilization, where the PC and Windows tools expose it.
- Storage activity: note a spike if you can observe one, particularly if it coincides with a hitch.
The pattern matters more than any one reading. If NPU activity rises while frame times, GPU behavior, CPU use, and memory use remain steady, that observation does not show that the AI task is slowing the game. If stutters coincide with CPU, memory, or storage spikes, background contention is a more relevant lead to investigate. A GPU utilization or clock change while NPU use stays near idle points more toward graphics or power settings than NPU load.
Windows AI is not one resource category. Microsoft says Copilot+ AI components run locally on dedicated hardware such as an NPU, with local execution intended to reduce cloud dependence and latency. Microsoft’s Windows AI API documentation also distinguishes workloads that use an NPU, GPU, or CPU on different devices. So the label “AI” alone does not tell you which component to watch.
There are two useful comparisons: whether the game becomes less smooth, and whether a resource changes at the same time. For example, increased NPU activity without a frame-time change is different from a repeated frame-time hitch that coincides with a CPU or storage spike. A resource reading can point toward what to investigate next, but it does not identify a cause on its own.

How do you run a fair enabled-versus-disabled test?
Change only the suspected AI feature between test states. A fixed scene or route, unchanged game settings, and multiple runs help separate a real pattern from ordinary variation between runs.
- Choose a repeatable workload. Use a built-in benchmark, a reproducible location, or the same 60–120-second route through the game. Avoid changing the route or the actions you perform between runs.
- Hold other settings constant. Keep resolution, graphics-quality preset, frame cap, power mode, display mode, graphics-driver version, and background apps unchanged. Note the settings so you can confirm they match in both states.
- Record the starting state. Note whether the suspected AI feature is enabled, paused, or disabled, and whether Game Mode is active. If you suspect Recall, test its state separately rather than treating every Windows AI component as one switch.
- Run the game with the feature off or paused. Restart the game after changing the feature. Follow the same route, record average FPS and frame-time consistency, and capture GPU utilization, clocks and temperature, CPU utilization, RAM/VRAM, storage activity if observable, and NPU use where available.
- Run the comparison with the feature on. Re-enable only the suspected feature, restart the game, repeat the same workload, and collect the same readings.
- Repeat both states. Make at least two runs per state. Compare the results across runs or distributions, not just the highest FPS number. If results conflict, add runs rather than drawing a conclusion from the most favorable one.
- Change one graphics setting at a time if needed. Windows’ per-game Graphics settings can help test GPU preference, Optimizations for windowed games, or Auto HDR. Restart the game after each change, and do not combine several switches in one comparison.
A simple log helps keep the test honest:
| Run | AI feature state | Game Mode | Display mode | Average FPS | Frame-time result | GPU / CPU / memory / NPU notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Off or paused | Record state | Record mode | Record result | Record result | Record readings or notable spikes |
| 2 | Off or paused | Record state | Record mode | Record result | Record result | Record readings or notable spikes |
| 3 | On | Same as other runs | Same as other runs | Record result | Record result | Record readings or notable spikes |
| 4 | On | Same as other runs | Same as other runs | Record result | Record result | Record readings or notable spikes |
The table is a recording aid, not a prescribed benchmark format. Use the same metrics and tools for both states so that a change in how you measure does not become another variable.
Keep the comparison tied to a clearly defined feature state. “Off” may mean paused, disabled, or removed depending on the feature, and those states are not interchangeable. Write down exactly which control you used. If you are testing more than one AI feature, do separate pairs of runs for each rather than turning everything off at once.
When a result looks different, check whether the difference repeats in both runs and whether the telemetry changed during the same part of the route. A lower average FPS across only one run is weaker evidence than frame-time disruption that repeatedly appears alongside the same resource spike. The aim is not to find a perfect benchmark score; it is to see whether a consistent pattern follows the feature switch while the other conditions stay fixed.

How can you see NPU and game performance activity in Windows?
Task Manager can show NPU resource usage on supported Windows systems. For game-side readings, use a performance overlay available for your GPU or game; NVIDIA’s official overlay, for example, can display frame rates, clock speeds, GPU temperatures, and other metrics.
Check NPU use in Task Manager
Microsoft documents Task Manager as a way to view NPU resource usage on devices with NPUs. Open Task Manager while the game is running and inspect the NPU reading during the test. If your system does not expose an NPU reading, record that it is unavailable rather than treating a missing reading as zero activity.
Keep the observation tied to the same time window as the game run. A momentary NPU reading after a run does not establish what happened during the route, and a nonzero reading alone does not establish an FPS impact.
For useful context, compare what the NPU does during the off or paused run with what it does during the enabled run. A brief increase when an AI action occurs is not the same pattern as sustained activity during the entire route. Either way, check whether frame times or another resource changed at the same time before concluding that the activity affected the game.
Record frame rate and GPU telemetry
If you use NVIDIA’s official overlay, its default shortcut for toggling the overlay is Alt+R. It can show frame rate, clock speeds, GPU temperatures, and other metrics. Confirm that the overlay is visible before both test states, and use the same displayed metrics each time.
Availability of specific readings depends on the tools and hardware you have. The comparison still works if some metric is unavailable; mark it as unavailable and base your conclusion on the readings you can collect consistently.
Do not treat an overlay as a replacement for a repeatable route. It reports useful measurements, but the comparison is only meaningful if the same game scene, settings, and measurement window are used for both states. If your tool cannot capture frame-time consistency, note that limitation and avoid relying on average FPS alone to rule out short hitches.

How do you test Recall without mixing it up with other AI features?
Recall is opt-in, so you can compare its states independently. It periodically saves snapshots of the active screen and analyzes them locally; Microsoft says snapshots are encrypted and can be paused, deleted, or disabled.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First compare the game with Recall active against the same game route with Recall paused. If a difference appears, repeat with Recall disabled or removed to help distinguish background processing associated with Recall from other Windows components. Change only Recall between these runs, restart the game, and record whether Game Mode is active.
Microsoft states that Recall does not save game video when Game Mode is active on platforms that support it. That is a qualification about game-video saving, not a substitute for measuring performance: check your Game Mode state and correlate resource readings with frame-time changes.
Microsoft’s current Recall requirements are a Copilot+ PC with a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage. The same documentation says 50 GB of free space is required to enable Recall, and automatic snapshot saving pauses when free space falls below 25 GB. These requirements and storage thresholds describe Recall, not a universal requirement for testing other Windows AI features.
Those storage thresholds can help explain why Recall may not be saving snapshots as expected, but they do not by themselves explain a game slowdown. If snapshot saving pauses because free space is below 25 GB, record that state rather than assuming Recall is actively saving during the test. The comparison still depends on the actual feature state and whether any performance change repeats.
How do you check Windows graphics settings that can change game behavior?
Windows has per-game options that can help isolate graphics behavior from AI activity. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game, and test one relevant option at a time. Restart the game after each change.
GPU preference
Use the game’s per-app Graphics entry to test its GPU preference if the system offers one. Record the original selection and the test selection. A change in GPU use or clocks after changing preference is evidence to investigate graphics selection; it is not by itself proof that an AI feature caused the original behavior.

Optimizations for windowed games
Windows 11 Optimizations for windowed games applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode. Microsoft says it changes presentation to the flip model, and the option can be turned off per game. If the game uses another API or display mode, this setting may not apply to that test.
Compare the setting on and off only if the game’s mode and API fall within that scope. Do not change it in the same run where you change the AI feature; otherwise, you will not know which change accompanied a performance difference.
This is a separate graphics test, not an AI on/off test. If the game only appears to stutter in borderless or windowed mode, the setting’s scope makes it a relevant variable to isolate. Keep the display mode consistent while checking it, and then return to the original setup before comparing the AI feature again.
Auto HDR
Auto HDR can also be disabled per game from Windows Graphics settings. Test it separately from the AI toggle and other graphics options. This is useful when trying to identify a display or presentation change that happens to coincide with an AI test, but it does not show that Auto HDR is an AI workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you interpret the results?
Look for a repeatable relationship between the feature state, game frame times, and resource use. The table below maps common observations to reasonable next checks; it does not make any one reading a definitive diagnosis.
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to test next |
|---|---|---|
| NPU activity changes, but frame times and GPU/CPU readings remain similar. | The AI workload may be running without a measurable game-performance change in this test. | Repeat the route and compare the runs; do not infer an FPS penalty from NPU use alone. |
| Stutters appear alongside CPU, RAM, or storage spikes. | Background contention is a plausible lead, though the readings do not identify the responsible process by themselves. | Check what is active during the spike and repeat with only the suspected feature paused or disabled. |
| GPU utilization or clocks change while NPU use is near idle. | Graphics selection, presentation mode, power behavior, or another graphics-side variable deserves attention. | Test GPU preference, windowed-game optimization, and Auto HDR individually where applicable. |
| The average FPS is similar but frame-time consistency worsens. | A change in smoothness may be hidden by the average. | Compare frame-time results across repeated runs and identify whether the uneven intervals coincide with resource spikes. |
| One run is slower, but later runs do not show the same pattern. | The difference may be ordinary run-to-run variation rather than a stable feature effect. | Add runs under the same conditions before attributing the change. |
There is no universal FPS-penalty percentage for Windows AI features established by the Microsoft documentation covered here. The result is specific to the feature, system, game, settings, and conditions you tested; it should not be generalized to every game or AI workload.
If the enabled and disabled runs show similar frame-time behavior and resource readings, the test did not find a measurable effect under those conditions. That is a useful result, but it is not proof that every AI task or game will behave the same way. If only GPU activity changes, use the per-game graphics options as separate follow-up tests; if CPU, memory, or storage spikes track the hitch, investigate those moments rather than attributing the slowdown to the NPU by default.

What can make an A/B test misleading?
A controlled test is only useful if the two states are comparable. Watch for these common sources of confusion:
- Changing more than one variable: Turning off several AI or graphics features at once may show that the overall configuration changed, but it cannot identify which switch mattered.
- Using different gameplay: Different areas, effects, or player actions may change the game’s workload. Reuse the same benchmark or route.
- Comparing different display modes: Exclusive fullscreen and borderless or windowed modes are not interchangeable for testing presentation behavior. Keep display mode fixed unless it is the variable under test.
- Ignoring Game Mode: Record whether it is active, especially when testing Recall, because Microsoft’s statement about not saving game video is limited to platforms where Game Mode is active.
- Relying on average FPS alone: An average can conceal short hitches. Include frame-time consistency and look for spikes that occur at the same time as stutters.
- Making a conclusion from one run: A single unusually good or bad pass is not a reliable comparison. Repeat each state and compare the broader pattern.
- Assuming every AI workload uses the NPU: Microsoft’s API documentation identifies different processing hardware across workloads and devices. Check actual resource use instead of inferring it from a feature name.
- Comparing unlike feature states: Pausing, disabling, and removing a feature may not produce the same background behavior. Name the state in your log and compare like with like.
- Using a setting outside its scope: Optimizations for windowed games applies to compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games in windowed or borderless modes. A result from another game mode or API does not test that option’s stated scope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one successful test prove that AI features never affect my games?
No. It only tells you what happened in the game, feature state, and configuration you tested. A different game, background task, or feature action can produce a different result, so treat the conclusion as specific to the conditions you recorded.
Should I test each game separately?
Yes, if you want to know whether a result applies to a particular game. Graphics APIs, display modes, and workloads vary, and Windows’ windowed-game optimization applies only to compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games in windowed or borderless modes.
Do I need to buy a new PC or install a monitoring tool to run the comparison?
No new hardware is required for the described workflow. Task Manager can expose NPU activity, and an existing game or GPU overlay can provide performance readings; which metrics are available depends on your system and tools.
Does NPU activity automatically mean my FPS will drop?
No. NPU activity shows that a workload is using the NPU, not that the game is losing performance. Compare it with frame times and GPU, CPU, memory, and storage readings during the same run.
Can I use Recall’s pause control instead of turning Recall off?
Yes. A useful first comparison is active versus paused, followed—if the difference repeats—by a separate test with Recall disabled or removed. Record the exact state and keep Game Mode unchanged.
What does Recall need, and when does it stop saving snapshots automatically?
Microsoft’s current requirements list a Copilot+ PC with a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB RAM, and 256 GB storage, with 50 GB free space required to enable Recall. Automatic snapshot saving pauses when free space drops below 25 GB.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen does Windows Optimizations for windowed games apply?
Microsoft says the Windows 11 setting applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless. It changes presentation to the flip model and can be turned off per game; test it separately from the AI feature.
Is there an official FPS penalty for Windows AI features?
The Microsoft documentation covered here does not establish a universal FPS-penalty percentage. Measure your own game and configuration with repeated, controlled runs.
The Bottom Line
To check whether a PC’s AI features affect a game, run the same route with one feature enabled and disabled, restart the game after each change, and compare repeated frame-time and resource readings. Treat NPU activity as context—not proof—and use Windows’ per-game graphics switches as separate tests.
