MyChart is Epic’s patient portal and a useful clue, but some healthcare organizations give their portals local names, so the provider is the authority on its own setup. Epic describes the provider’s system as managing patient health information; the exact information stored and shown to you depends on that organization’s configuration.
How to check whether your provider uses Epic
- Check the provider’s official website. Search its site for “MyChart,” “patient portal,” or “Epic,” and follow portal links from the provider’s own pages. Epic says organizations using its software likely offer MyChart, but a local brand name may be used instead. Epic’s patient guidance explains the relationship between Epic and MyChart.
- Ask the office if you need certainty. You can ask: “Does your electronic health record run on Epic, and what is the name of your patient portal?” A third-party app connection or a portal feature by itself does not establish which system a particular clinic uses.
- Check the provider’s portal and privacy pages. These may identify the system and explain the organization’s handling of records. If they do not answer your question, contact the provider directly.
What information may be in an Epic record
Epic’s patient guidance says a doctor’s office using Epic stores and manages health information. Its examples include test results, medications, surgeries, address, and date of birth. Other Epic materials describe categories that may be available in particular sharing features, including allergies, immunizations, health issues, lab results, medical history, and visit records. These are examples—not a promise that every provider stores or displays every category. Epic’s contact page describes representative records.
What you can see in MyChart also depends on the provider. The portal may support appointment viewing and scheduling, test-result review, and messages with a care team, but features vary by organization. Not every item in a clinical record is necessarily visible in a patient account.
Who operates the system, and who should you contact?
For questions about your actual chart, contact the healthcare organization—not Epic. Ask its medical records department or privacy officer what information it keeps, how it is shared, how to request a copy, how corrections work, and whether any records have special access restrictions. The laws that apply depend on your location and provider; Epic gives HIPAA in the United States, GDPR in Europe, and the Privacy Act in Australia as examples, not as a determination of your specific rights. Epic’s Mobile Application Privacy Policy for Patients, last updated August 12, 2025, says MyChart mobile apps connect to systems operated and maintained by healthcare organizations. It says Epic does not receive or store copies of health or fitness data transmitted to those organizations through the apps. The policy separately says MyChart Central stores limited account information—such as name, date of birth, and contact information used to link accounts—on Epic-owned servers in the United States. This policy statement concerns the patient mobile apps and data transmitted through them; it should not be read as a universal description of every Epic service or data flow.
How patient-authorized app sharing works
If you choose to connect a third-party app, review what it asks to access before approving. Epic’s Patient Authentication guide describes a process in which you sign in to the provider’s portal, review the app’s disclosures and terms, select the provider, and approve access if you want to proceed. Depending on what is offered, you may be able to select data categories or an access duration. Examples of requested categories include lab results, allergies, medications, and immunization history.

New information added to your medical record during an authorization period may also be available to the app. To review or remove an app’s access, use MyChart’s “Manage My Linked Apps and Devices” area, as described in the guide. Check the current portal for its exact options and labels.

Share Everywhere is a separate option from ongoing third-party app access. Epic says you can generate a one-time share code for someone involved in your care. The recipient can use it to view a subset of information available in your MyChart account temporarily and may send a note back to your health system. The shared subset may include medications, allergies, health issues, immunizations, care gaps, lab results, medical history, visit records, and code status; it is not necessarily your complete medical record.

Epic’s February 2, 2020 article, “Patients Control Sharing Their Medical Records,” describes older “Share My Record” interface steps. For current instructions, follow the Share Everywhere FAQ and the options in your provider’s portal rather than relying on that historical interface description.
