To check whether your eye drops are recalled, match the lot number on the bottle or box against the affected lots in an official recall notice. Confirm the exact product, formulation and package size too: a matching brand name alone does not establish that your package is included.
Find the product and lot details on your package
Gather the bottle and its box, if you still have it. Record the brand, full product name, strength or formulation, package size, manufacturer if shown, and lot number. Use the printed label rather than memory or a retailer’s listing, which may not identify the specific package you have.
The lot number may appear on the bottle, carton, or both. If you cannot locate it or the printing is unreadable, ask the manufacturer or the pharmacy that dispensed the drops to help identify the package.
Search official FDA recall information
- Start with the FDA’s What You Should Know about Eye Drops page for eye-drop-specific alerts and warnings.
- Search the FDA’s Drug Recalls page and the broader Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts page using the product name, brand, or manufacturer.
- Open the recall notice itself. Do not rely on a search-result snippet; the notice gives the product scope and directions.
Compare your package with the recall notice
Check the notice’s product description, manufacturer, formulation or strength, package size, and affected lot numbers against the information you recorded. The lot number is central: the FDA says, “If your medicine has been recalled, check the lot number on the label of your medicine to see if it matches the lot number of the recalled medicine in the notification.” See Understanding Drug Recalls: What to Know and What to Do.

If the product name matches but your lot number does not, read the notice for any additional lots, sizes, or formulations. Do not assume every package sold under the same brand is included—or excluded—based on the brand name alone. Follow the scope stated in the notice.
If you do not find a matching notice
A search with no match means only that you did not find a notice in the pages you checked; it does not prove that no recall exists. The FDA notes that not all recalls are announced on FDA.gov or in news media. Its broad recalls page keeps listings available for three years before archival, so for an older notice search the FDA archive by product or company name and year. If you still cannot identify your product or lot, contact the manufacturer or dispensing pharmacy.

If your eye drops match a recall
Follow the specific notice’s directions for stopping use, returning the product, seeking a refund, or contacting the company. There is no single remedy that applies to every recall. If the drops are prescription medicine or you need them for an eye condition, contact your prescriber or pharmacist promptly about a replacement or safe treatment plan instead of changing treatment on your own.
Eye drops must be sterile because they are applied to the eye. If you experience a problem such as discharge, eye pain, vision changes, or discomfort, stop using the drops and contact a health professional. The FDA also advises reporting unexpected side effects.
