Check for an explicit MagSafe-compatible claim for your exact iPhone model, then test magnetic attachment and wireless charging as two separate things. A MagSafe charger snapping into a centered position is the practical check for magnetic alignment; a charging icon confirms only that charging has started through that case-and-phone setup.
MagSafe and wireless charging are different checks
MagSafe combines wireless charging with magnets that help align a compatible charger on supported iPhone and case combinations. Wireless charging alone does not show that a case has MagSafe magnets: Apple says a MagSafe charger can also charge other Qi-compatible iPhones without magnetic alignment. Apple’s MagSafe guidance describes the supported magnetic attachment.
Check MagSafe compatibility
- Check the packaging or manufacturer listing. Look for an explicit MagSafe-compatible claim and confirm it applies to your exact iPhone model. A printed circle or ring on the case is not, by itself, proof of compatibility.
- Confirm your iPhone supports MagSafe. Apple distinguishes MagSafe-designed iPhone models from other Qi-compatible models. Check Apple’s current MagSafe compatibility guidance for your phone before treating a failed magnetic test as a case defect.
- Test the case on the phone. With the case fitted, bring a MagSafe charger to the back of the iPhone. On a supported combination, it should snap on and sit centered. Apple says supported MagSafe chargers attach to the back of iPhone or its MagSafe case or sleeve.
If the charger does not snap into place, that does not establish that the case is defective: the phone model may not support MagSafe attachment, or the case may not be designed for it.
Test wireless charging through the case
- Connect a Qi-certified charger and place the cased iPhone in the charger’s recommended position.
- Look for the charging icon on the iPhone screen. Apple says the icon appears when charging starts.
- If charging does not start, remove the case and try again. Apple warns that cases or other objects between the phone and charger can reduce charging performance.
Apple says iPhone 8 and later can charge with a Qi-certified charger. Its wireless-charging instructions provide setup guidance. If the phone charges with the case removed but not with it fitted, the case or something inside it may be interfering. A successful charge with the case on confirms wireless charging in that particular setup, not MagSafe magnetic alignment.

Check the phone, case and items together
Compatibility depends on the combination of iPhone model, case and charger, so a general claim that a case fits an iPhone family may not establish support for every model. Apple’s wireless-charging guidance identifies iPhone 8 or later for Qi charging, while MagSafe magnetic attachment applies to supported MagSafe-designed models.
Cards or other items between the phone and charger can interfere with charging. Apple advises removing sensitive cards or ensuring they are not between the iPhone and charger. Remove other objects from the charging area before repeating the test.

Compare two cases with the same tests
