Check the current syllabus and the exact instructions for the assignment, exam, or other assessment first. Then review any department or program rule and your institution’s academic-integrity policy. If those documents do not clearly cover the AI tool and the specific activity you want to perform, ask the instructor before using it on coursework. Permission is not automatically transferable: approval for studying, one class, one assignment, or one tool may not cover generating text, editing, coding, translation, or another assessment. When use is allowed, stay within the stated limits and follow the required disclosure, citation, and record-keeping method.
What is the fastest way to tell whether I can use AI for a college assignment?
Use this order: assignment instructions, syllabus, department or program rules, then the institution’s academic-integrity guidance. The assignment-level rule is usually the most specific because it can limit both the purpose and the amount of AI assistance.
- Open the current documents. Use the syllabus for the term in which you are submitting the work and the exact prompt, rubric, exam instructions, lab sheet, or project brief.
- Search for the relevant language. Look for “AI,” “generative AI,” “ChatGPT,” “automated tools,” “language tools,” “writing assistants,” “translation,” “coding assistants,” and the names of any feature you plan to use.
- Read the whole paragraph or section. A sentence saying that AI is allowed may be followed by limits on brainstorming, editing, code, data, sources, privacy, or disclosure. A prohibition may apply only to a particular assessment rather than the whole course.
- Check higher-level rules. Read the department or program policy and the institution’s academic-integrity policy for definitions, default expectations, and misconduct procedures.
- Ask before acting if anything is uncertain. Describe the tool, the task, and the exact intended use. Keep the instructor’s response with your course records.
This process is safer than relying on a classmate’s experience, a general campus statement, or a tool’s own claims about acceptable use.

Which course documents control the decision?
The specific assignment instructions and the syllabus together establish the course’s stated expectations; institutional documents provide context but do not replace them.

Start with the assignment or assessment instructions
Look for a heading such as “Technology,” “Academic integrity,” “Permitted resources,” or “Use of generative AI.” Note whether the rule applies to the entire course, a particular paper, a coding exercise, a laboratory report, a presentation, a quiz, or a take-home examination. Some instructors allow an AI tool for idea generation but prohibit generated prose in the submitted work. Others permit a named tool only for a defined step, such as debugging code that you wrote yourself.
Use the syllabus to establish the course-wide baseline
A syllabus may contain a general rule that applies unless an assignment says otherwise. Columbia Business School’s student guidance tells students to read both the syllabus and individual assignment expectations because requirements can vary between courses and assessments. Florida Atlantic University likewise tells students that an allowed use should be identified for a specific assignment.
Check department, program, and academic-integrity rules
These documents can define prohibited assistance, unauthorized collaboration, falsification, or failure to acknowledge sources. They may also explain the process for an alleged violation. They are important, but they do not make an otherwise unclear assignment automatically clear; use them to identify the stricter boundary and then confirm the application with the instructor.

Do not treat either phrase as a complete answer. Identify the permitted activity, conditions, and accountability requirements.

The University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division illustrates why this distinction matters: its examples include no-use policies, use only after prior authorization, and defined permission with limits. “AI is allowed” without an activity and a boundary is not enough to justify a particular workflow.
What activities should I identify before asking for permission?
Describe the actual workflow, not just the product name. Instructors can evaluate a concrete use more reliably than a vague request to “use AI.”

Also name the feature, not only the brand. A writing application’s “rewrite” button, a search engine’s generated answer, a translation tool’s neural mode, and an integrated coding suggestion can all involve AI even when the interface does not use the phrase “generative AI.”
What if the syllabus and assignment instructions say nothing?
Silence is not permission. Ask the instructor before using AI for the assessed work, especially when the task is graded, timed, collaborative, or submitted for academic credit.
Simon Fraser University’s student guidance says the instructor is the way to know whether generative AI may be used for course assignments. Columbia Business School, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Chicago give the same practical direction: obtain clarification when expectations are unclear. Columbia specifically suggests asking in writing, which creates a record of the answer.
Send the question early enough to receive a response before the work begins. Include the course and assignment, the tool or feature, the exact task, whether any output will appear in the submission, and the safeguards you will use. If the instructor says the request must go through a teaching assistant, department, or disability-services process, follow that route.
How do I write a useful permission request to my instructor?
A short, specific message is easier to answer than “Can I use ChatGPT?” State the proposed use and ask for a yes, no, or defined limitation.

Do not assume a lack of reply is approval. If the deadline is near, send a follow-up through the course’s official channel and use only resources clearly permitted until you receive an answer.
Do college-wide AI policies override the course syllabus?
There is no universal college rule that resolves every course. Official university examples show that instructors and programs often set the operative expectations.

If two rules appear to conflict, follow the stricter instruction temporarily and ask the instructor or program office to resolve the conflict. Do not assume that a broad campus statement cancels a specific assessment rule.
What disclosure, citation, and records might be required?
Permission often comes with accountability requirements. Use the method named by the instructor rather than inventing a citation style.
- Acknowledgement: A statement may identify the tool, date, purpose, and the parts of the work affected.
- Citation: The instructor may require a citation for generated text, ideas, images, code, or a conversation transcript. Ask which style and location to use.
- Process records: Keep prompts, significant outputs, revisions, and the tool’s name or version when the course requests them.
- Verification: Check every factual claim, quotation, calculation, source, and code suggestion yourself. Permission does not transfer responsibility for errors.
- Privacy controls: Do not upload identifiable student information, unpublished research, confidential case data, restricted readings, or examination content unless the instructor and applicable policy expressly permit it.
Columbia Business School, Simon Fraser University, Maryland, and Florida Atlantic University all describe documentation, acknowledgement, or citation as possible conditions of permitted use. The exact format remains course-specific.

Approval to use an AI tutor while studying does not automatically cover a submitted essay. Permission to brainstorm for one paper does not cover a take-home exam. An instructor who approves one writing assistant may not have approved a coding assistant, a translation feature, or a different model. If the assignment changes, the tool changes, or the output will be used in a new way, ask again or obtain confirmation that the original permission still applies.

How should I handle built-in AI features?
Ask about the feature or workflow even when “AI” is not prominent in the product’s name. UBC notes that AI is embedded in translation, writing, citation, and search tools; the relevant question is what the feature does with your input and output.
For example, a browser’s generated search summary, a word processor’s rewrite command, an accessibility tool that predicts text, and an integrated code completion panel may be governed differently. Describe the feature, what you will provide to it, and whether its output will influence the submitted work. If the instructor permits ordinary spelling correction but not rewriting, turn off or avoid functions that go beyond the approved boundary.

Most problems arise from exceeding the scope or failing to document the use, not from the mere existence of an approved tool.
- Using a tool before obtaining required prior authorization.
- Submitting generated wording or code when permission covered only brainstorming or explanations.
- Assuming “open-book” or “open-internet” means AI is allowed.
- Copying an AI-generated citation, quotation, or factual claim without checking the original source.
- Uploading classmates’ work, private data, research participants’ information, or restricted course materials.
- Relying on an approval from another instructor, another course, or a previous term.
- Failing to include the required acknowledgement, citation, prompt record, or appendix.
- Editing an output so heavily that the final use no longer matches the activity the instructor approved.
If you realize you exceeded the permission, stop using the tool, preserve the relevant record, and contact the instructor promptly. Do not delete messages or attempt to conceal the workflow; ask how to correct the submission.

- Confirm that the tool and feature match the approved description.
- Confirm that the activity stayed within the allowed purpose and that no prohibited material was uploaded.
- Remove generated content that the policy does not permit, unless the instructor has approved its inclusion.
- Verify facts, quotations, references, calculations, translations, and code independently.
- Add the required acknowledgement or citation in the specified location and style.
- Attach or retain prompts, outputs, revision notes, or other records if required.
- Save the syllabus, assignment instructions, and written clarification with the submitted-work record in case the course later asks how the work was produced.
What is the safest decision rule when I still cannot tell?
Do not use the AI feature on assessed work until the instructor or the applicable course authority gives a clear answer. You can continue with methods that the instructions plainly permit, such as your own notes, assigned readings, or an expressly allowed reference tool.
When you receive an answer, interpret it narrowly: use only the named tool for the named purpose, respect limits on data and output, and follow the stated disclosure process. If the answer is conditional, write down each condition and check it before submitting.
