To check whether an AI chatbot is sharing your personal information, audit the exact account and product you used: review its model-improvement setting, chat history and memory, connected apps, uploads and public links, then read its current privacy notice for human review and retention. These are separate data pathways, not one privacy switch. Settings can show and manage some of them, but they cannot prove every internal access or downstream transfer.
What does “sharing” mean for an AI chatbot?
“Sharing” can describe several different things, and a chatbot may treat each one differently. A conversation might be saved to your account, used to improve a model, reviewed by authorized people, processed by a service provider, sent to a connected app, or exposed through a public link. A chatbot may also use information to respond to you or carry out an action you requested.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) warns that chatbot data may be collected and stored, used to train systems, used in profiles or decisions, or disclosed to other users. It also notes that platforms may not clearly explain their data practices. The practical implication is to check each pathway rather than infer what happens from a single setting labeled “privacy” or “training.”

- Model improvement: whether conversations may be used to improve models or other services.
- Review and operations: whether people or service providers may access content for safety, support, or service operation.
- Connected services: whether an app, extension, or other integration receives information to complete a task.
- Sharing and actions: whether a conversation has a public link or the chatbot is authorized to act on your behalf.
These distinctions matter because turning off model improvement does not necessarily stop storage, safety processing, or delivery of information to a connected service. “Not used for training” is a statement about one purpose; it should not be read as “not retained” or “never processed.”

How can I audit a chatbot account?
Use the same account and device context in which you used the chatbot. Work or school accounts, personal accounts, signed-out sessions, plans, regions, and administrator-managed workspaces can have different controls or terms. If you used more than one account or product, treat each as a separate audit rather than assuming one setting covers them all.
- Identify the product and account. Record the chatbot, whether you were signed in, whether the account is personal or managed by work or school, and any relevant plan or workspace. If you used the chatbot in more than one browser or account, check each separately.
- Inspect model-improvement controls. Find the setting that governs use of conversations to improve models or services. Note its current state, when it applies, and whether it covers all features and modalities you used. A setting may apply only to future conversations or a particular account context.
- Check saved history and memory separately. Review saved chats, activity history, archived conversations, personalization, and saved-memory controls. Look for separate options to remove a conversation, clear activity, or delete a memory.
- Review what you supplied. Check prompts, uploaded files, recordings, voice or video inputs, and any screen-sharing or device features you used. Consider whether those inputs contained names, contact details, work documents, or another person’s information.
- Inspect sharing and connections. Look for public or shared conversation links, connected apps, browser or device permissions, and services authorized to receive information. Remove access you no longer need and review the recipient’s own privacy terms.
- Read the current privacy notice. Search it for retention, deletion, model improvement, human review, service providers, safety, feedback, and legal exceptions. Check that the notice applies to your product and account type.
- Export or request data, then decide what to delete. Use available account export and deletion tools, or the provider’s formal privacy-request process. Save records you need before deleting them. Deleting a chatbot record may not delete information already sent to another service.
- Reduce exposure going forward. Avoid entering confidential or highly sensitive information unless you have a valid reason and understand the applicable terms. Remove identifying details where possible, and do not submit another person’s personal information without a valid reason.
For a useful record, note the date you checked the setting and the wording of the control, especially if it describes future conversations. Also note any exceptions listed in the notice. This will help you distinguish a setting change from a request to delete existing records.
The OPC’s public guidance, modified May 6, 2025, advises users to “limit the personal information that you share about yourself” and “review and adjust your privacy settings.” Those steps reduce risk, but a settings review is not a technical audit of every copy or access event.
How do I check ChatGPT’s data controls?
For a personal ChatGPT account, open Settings → Data controls and inspect Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI’s Help Center documentation says model sharing is enabled by default on personal Free, Plus, and Pro workspaces; turning the control off means new conversations will not be used to train OpenAI models. Saved chats can still remain in history.
For signed-in accounts, OpenAI says the setting applies across web and mobile. A signed-out user’s choice is saved in that browser. Availability can depend on plan, sign-in status, and workspace, so check the setting in the account and device you actually use. Voice mode has a separate training control, which is important if you use voice rather than text. Do not assume the text-chat control also settles how a voice feature is handled.
OpenAI explicitly states that turning off Improve the model for everyone “does not delete or hide saved chats.” Review Memory and chat history independently; changing the model-improvement setting does not itself clear either one. Temporary Chat is a distinct option: OpenAI says it does not appear in history, create or update memories, or improve models while temporary, but may be retained for up to 30 days for safety.
Deleting or clearing chats is another separate action. OpenAI says cleared chats are deleted from its systems within 30 days, subject to exceptions if they have already been de-identified and disassociated from the account or must be retained for security or legal reasons. OpenAI also says a limited set of authorized personnel and service providers may access content for specified purposes, and that content is not shared with advertisers for marketing. These statements describe policy, not an independent verification of a particular account’s records.

How do I check Google Gemini Apps’ data controls?
Review Gemini Apps Activity or Keep Activity, along with connected-app settings, public links, and device permissions. Google’s Gemini Apps privacy notice says Keep Activity controls whether chats are saved in Activity and used to improve Google services, including generative AI models. When it is off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train models unless you submit feedback.
Turning Keep Activity off is not the same as immediate deletion or the end of all processing. Google says chats are retained for 72 hours for response, safety, and feedback handling even when Keep Activity is off. Temporary chats are also retained with the account for 72 hours and are not used to train Google’s AI models.
Google says some chats are reviewed by trained human reviewers. It says chats selected for review may be retained for up to three years after disconnection from the account. Turning off Keep Activity prevents future chats from being reviewed to improve services, but Google says this does not eliminate all safety processing or human review. Check the live notice for the purposes and exceptions that apply to your use.
Review which apps are connected and what they can receive. Google describes possible inputs including prompts, files, recordings, device or app context, connected services, and location information. A connected app processes data under its own policies; deleting Gemini activity does not delete data already saved by another connected Google or third-party service. Check public links as well: a conversation intentionally shared through a link has a different exposure path from private account history.
When you review an integration, consider whether you still need it and whether its recipient’s terms explain how it handles information. Disconnecting an app can limit future access, but it does not establish that information the app previously received has been deleted. Check the recipient’s deletion or privacy-request options separately if you need to address that copy.
How do I check Anthropic Claude’s data retention?
For Claude consumer products, inspect the current privacy and retention notice and the control for allowing chats or coding sessions to improve Claude. Anthropic’s consumer retention page, dated July 1, 2026, says that if users allow this improvement use, Anthropic may retain the data in de-identified form for up to five years in model-training pipelines. The notice says this applies to new or resumed conversations after the setting is enabled; it says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude.
Anthropic says deleted consumer conversations are removed from chat history immediately and deleted from backend systems within 30 days. Its notice describes distinct retention categories for conversations flagged by automated trust-and-safety systems, submitted feedback, legal requirements, and disputes. Read those categories separately rather than treating the ordinary conversation-deletion period as a promise that every related record disappears on the same schedule.

These statements concern Anthropic consumer products, not Claude for Work or the Anthropic API. If you use an organizational or developer account, consult the terms and controls for that product rather than applying consumer-account retention details to it.

The figures below are provider-published policy durations, not independent measurements of deletion performance. They describe particular products and circumstances; they are not interchangeable guarantees that all data is handled identically.

Check the live provider notice before relying on a duration: policies and controls can change, and the applicable period may depend on account type, setting, or why a record was retained. A published retention period tells you what the provider says should happen in a category of cases; it is not a receipt confirming the deletion status of one particular prompt.
How can I compare two chatbots without guessing which is “most private”?
Compare the same kinds of data paths under equivalent account contexts. A single default or retention number cannot establish that one service is more private overall: controls, exceptions, integrations, and account terms differ.

Record the date you checked each live notice and setting. If a work or school administrator manages the account, note that too: the organization may apply additional policies not visible in consumer-account documentation. Compare the exact account types you would use, not a personal account on one service with a managed workspace on another.

What can account settings prove—and what can’t they prove?
Settings can show the controls available to your account and help you change future use or manage visible records. A privacy notice can explain the provider’s stated practices and exceptions. Neither, by itself, proves exactly which staff member or service accessed a particular prompt, whether a particular copy was deleted, or whether another recipient retained data it already received.
If you need an answer about a specific conversation, use the provider’s formal privacy-request route. Identify the account and approximate date, then ask specifically about the data involved, its purposes, recipients, retention, and deletion status. A policy duration is a published rule, not a receipt confirming the fate of one individual record. Keep the request focused on the particular account and interaction so the provider can identify what you are asking about.

Are my chatbot conversations used to train AI?
It depends on the product, account type, settings, and sometimes the feature you used. Check the model-improvement control and the provider’s current notice, including whether a separate setting applies to voice, feedback, or other inputs. Check the connected-app list and any public or shared links, then review the recipient’s own policies. Removing an integration or deleting chatbot activity may not remove information already received or saved by another service. Use that recipient’s privacy or deletion process if you need to ask about its copy.
