A Windows blue screen can point to a driver, but a stop code or the module named after “What failed” is a clue—not proof. Check recent changes and Windows logs first, then use a crash dump for stronger evidence. Only after you have a plausible suspect should you test it with a reversible change or, for advanced troubleshooting, Driver Verifier.

What a blue-screen message can—and cannot—tell you

Windows may call a blue screen a stop-code error, bug check, kernel error, or Blue Screen error. The stop code records the type of failure. A name shown after “What failed” may identify a module involved in the crash, but it does not necessarily identify the root cause: a device, its driver, related software, or other hardware could be responsible. Microsoft’s support guidance puts it plainly: “A hardware device, its driver, or software might have caused this error.” Microsoft: Resolving Blue Screen errors in Windows.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting page gives two different broad estimates in separate sections: one says about 70% of stop errors are caused by third-party driver code, 10% by hardware issues, 5% by Microsoft code, and 15% have unknown causes because memory is too corrupted to analyze; another says about 75% are caused by faulty drivers. The page does not state a year for these estimates. They are not a reliable probability for any particular crash, and the two estimates should not be combined. Microsoft stop-error troubleshooting guidance.

Start with the crash details and recent changes

  1. Record the exact stop code and “What failed” name. Photograph the screen or write down the text before restarting. These details are leads to compare with later evidence, not a diagnosis on their own.
  2. List what changed shortly before the first crash. Note driver updates, newly installed software or services, and hardware added or changed. A repeated crash beginning after a specific change makes that change more relevant to investigate.
  3. Check Device Manager. Open Start, search for Device Manager, and look for devices marked with a warning icon. Open a relevant device’s properties and review its status and events. A warning or event can help narrow the suspect, but does not by itself prove that the device caused the blue screen.

Microsoft’s blue-screen troubleshooting guidance recommends considering recently added hardware and checking Device Manager for problems. Menu labels and screen appearance can vary between Windows versions.

Match Event Viewer errors to the crash time

  1. Right-click Start and open Event Viewer.
  2. Expand Windows Logs, then select System.
  3. Find errors or warnings at the time of the crash. Compare their timestamps with the crash and note any repeated device or driver references.

An event close to the crash can provide useful context, especially if the same pattern recurs, but timing alone does not establish causation. Look for agreement between the log, recent changes, device information, and any dump analysis rather than treating one event as proof. Microsoft includes checking the System log among its troubleshooting steps. Microsoft stop-error troubleshooting guidance.

Use a crash dump for deeper evidence

Windows may save crash data in a dump file. Small memory dumps are typically stored in %SystemRoot%Minidump. They can be useful, but contain less evidence than larger dumps, so a small dump may not settle which component caused the failure. Microsoft: Small Memory Dump.

For a more technical examination, Microsoft’s WinDbg guidance describes using the debugger’s !analyze command to inspect stop-code information and modules. A module named in the analysis is evidence to evaluate alongside the crash circumstances; it is not automatically proof that the named driver is defective. Microsoft: Analyze a kernel-mode dump file with WinDbg.

Compare the available diagnostic methods

Method What it can tell you Access and risk
Device Manager and Event Viewer Device warnings, related events, and timing clues to help narrow the investigation; not necessarily the root cause. Built into Windows and appropriate first checks.
Safe Mode Whether the problem changes in a reduced-driver and reduced-service environment; this can help when Windows will not start normally. Built into Windows. It is a troubleshooting environment, not a direct test that identifies a specific driver.
WinDbg with a dump file More detailed bug-check and module information when a useful dump exists. More technical; the amount of evidence depends on the dump.
Driver Verifier Can expose faulty behavior in a targeted driver under testing. Advanced and risky: it can significantly slow the computer and provoke additional crashes.

Test a plausible driver carefully

If the evidence points to a driver changed shortly before the crashes, use a reversible test rather than replacing hardware based only on a blue-screen message. Depending on the situation, roll back, disable, or uninstall the suspect driver or device, then observe whether the same crash returns. Microsoft advises considering recently added hardware and troubleshooting the associated device or driver. Microsoft stop-error troubleshooting guidance.

If Windows cannot start normally, Safe Mode loads a reduced set of drivers and services and can provide a way to troubleshoot startup problems. Its reduced environment can help you investigate, but a crash-free Safe Mode session alone does not identify which driver is responsible. Microsoft stop-error troubleshooting guidance.

Use Driver Verifier only for targeted advanced troubleshooting

Driver Verifier is not a first check. Microsoft warns that it can make a computer significantly slower and provoke additional crashes. If you use it, target only suspicious or recently changed drivers rather than verifying every driver at once, and make sure you have a way to recover if Windows becomes difficult to start. How to judge whether the evidence is strong

  • Weak evidence: one stop code, a single “What failed” name, or one nearby log entry.
  • More useful evidence: the same crash pattern repeatedly follows a driver or device change, and the timing aligns with related Device Manager or System log information.
  • Deeper evidence: a dump’s bug-check and module information supports the same suspect, with the limitation that a small dump may not contain enough detail.
  • A practical confirmation attempt: a reversible change to the plausible driver or device changes whether the same crash returns. Even then, interpret the result in context; crashes can have more than one possible cause.
