No text-only detector can prove who wrote a passage. A detector score is a statistical signal about the finished wording, not a recording of the writer’s actions. For a fair decision, preserve the original file, examine drafts and revision history, check sources and factual consistency, and ask the writer to explain the work. A detector can add context when it supports the language, genre, and document length, but it should never be the sole reason to fail a student, discipline an employee, or reject an author. Different tools can disagree because their models, training data, thresholds, and sensitivity to editing are different.
What can an AI-writing detector actually tell you?
A detector estimates whether a text resembles patterns found in machine-generated examples. It cannot observe who typed the words, whether a person edited an AI draft, or whether a human deliberately wrote in a predictable style. The result is therefore evidence about the text’s statistical features, not proof of authorship.
Most systems analyze signals such as word predictability, sentence variation, repetition, and stylistic regularity. Those signals occur in human writing too. A concise lab report, a carefully edited application, a translation, or prose written by someone using a second language can look “machine-like” even when no generator was used. Conversely, a generated passage that has been revised, paraphrased, or mixed with human writing may look human.
Use a score to decide whether more checking is warranted. Do not convert a percentage into a probability that a person or an AI wrote the text unless the vendor has validated that exact interpretation for the same language, genre, length, and model conditions. In practice, no universal calibration exists across current detectors.

How should you check a suspicious text?
The most defensible approach combines document forensics, process evidence, content review, and a conversation with the writer. Follow these steps in order so that a detector result does not predetermine the outcome.
1. Preserve the original record
Keep the submitted file exactly as received and make a read-only copy for analysis. Record the submission date, language, genre, approximate word count, and the detector name and model or software version. If you test the same passage later, note the new date and version; scores from different tools or releases are not interchangeable.
- Save the native file format as well as a rendered PDF when possible.
- Retain file metadata, document properties, and the platform’s audit or access log under your privacy policy.
- Do not repeatedly paste the text into public services before checking their retention and reuse terms.
2. Examine the writing process
Ask for evidence that existed while the work was being made: an outline, handwritten or digital notes, source lists, annotations, intermediate drafts, tracked changes, and version history. A continuous progression from plan to draft to revision is more informative than a single final file. Look for changes that respond to feedback, evolving citations, and discarded ideas that match the final argument.
Process evidence is not automatically conclusive. A writer can lose drafts, collaborate in a tool that does not retain history, or use assistance without preserving every step. Treat missing records as an uncertainty to resolve, not as an admission.
3. Read for substance rather than stereotypes
Check whether claims are accurate, sources actually support them, quotations are authentic, and the argument is internally consistent. Compare the work with the assignment, the writer’s stated expertise, and any required readings. An abrupt change in subject knowledge or citation practice may justify questions, but polished grammar, uniform sentence length, or a formal tone alone is not evidence of automation.
4. Run a detector only as a screening signal
If you use one, submit enough contiguous text for the product’s supported document-level analysis. GPTZero, for example, says document-level classification is more accurate than paragraph- or sentence-level classification. Follow the tool’s minimum-length and file-format guidance rather than testing isolated sentences, titles, or quotations.
Save the complete report, including highlighted spans, confidence language, model version, and any stated limitations. A headline percentage without that context is not an auditable finding.

5. Compare cautiously when tools disagree
Run competing tools on the same unchanged sample only if you have a legitimate reason and can protect the text. Record each output rather than choosing the highest score. Disagreement is evidence that the classification is uncertain, not evidence that one system has discovered the truth. NIST’s 2024 Generative AI (GenAI) Pilot Study, published in 2025, found large performance differences among generators and discriminators: some generators deceived most discriminators, while some discriminators detected almost all generators.
6. Invite an explanation or supervised demonstration
Give the writer a meaningful chance to explain the thesis, sources, calculations, and major revisions. A short, supervised writing task or an oral walkthrough can show whether the person understands the work and can reproduce its reasoning. It is supporting context, not a standalone authorship test: anxiety, disability, unfamiliarity with the topic, or limited time can affect performance.
7. Apply the governing policy before acting
Education, employment, publishing, and regulated environments have different rules for evidence, notice, confidentiality, and appeals. Follow the applicable policy, disclose the nature and limits of any automated screening, and allow the person to respond before imposing a penalty. A consequential decision should rest on corroborated evidence and human review, not on a detector percentage.
Why do AI detectors produce false positives and false negatives?
Detectors classify the final text, while authorship is a process. Several kinds of overlap and distortion make errors unavoidable.
Human and machine writing share the same signals
Predictable wording, conventional transitions, short sentences, and a neutral tone are common in school, business, and technical writing. They are also common in generated text. A detector cannot tell whether that regularity came from a person following a style guide or from a language model selecting likely words.
Editing and paraphrasing change the evidence
Light human editing can remove the patterns a detector relies on; heavy editing can create new ones. Paraphrasing and other obfuscation methods can similarly turn a generated passage into a text that appears human, while introducing awkward wording that triggers a different system. A 2023 peer-reviewed evaluation of 12 public tools plus Turnitin and PlagiarismCheck concluded that the tools were neither accurate nor reliable overall and that paraphrasing and obfuscation worsened performance.
Short passages contain too little signal
A detector has fewer observations in a paragraph than in a full document. Turnitin reports a higher incidence of false positives for scores from 0% through 19% and marks that range as less reliable. GPTZero says accuracy rises with text length and is better at document level than at paragraph or sentence level. A score on a short excerpt should therefore be treated as especially unstable.

Language, translation, and code affect performance
Models are trained unevenly across languages and genres. OpenAI said its former classifier performed worse outside English and on code, while predictable text was difficult to classify. GPTZero says its training data is mostly English prose by adults and warns about machine-generated or highly procedural text. A translated essay, multilingual submission, source code, formulaic legal clause, or lab protocol may fall outside a tool’s strongest coverage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →New generators and detectors continually shift the pattern
When a generator changes its decoding, formatting, or model family, a detector trained on older examples may lose sensitivity. A detector update can also change scores for the same unchanged document. NIST’s pilot study measured systems with area under the ROC curve (AUC) and Brier scores and found that performance varied significantly by system and dataset, which is why a single accuracy figure cannot represent every current model and writing situation.
Watermarks are not a universal solution
Some proposals embed a statistical watermark in generated text. The UK government’s international scientific report describes current detection methods as limited and notes that watermarks can be removed. A missing watermark cannot establish human authorship, and a surviving mark still requires a policy-compliant interpretation of what it proves.
How should you interpret detector percentages?
Read a percentage as the tool’s classification output under its own conditions, not as a calibrated authorship probability. Ask what text the vendor tested, how long it was, which languages and genres were included, and what threshold produced the label.
| Published figure | What it measured | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 26% true-positive rate; 9% false-positive rate (OpenAI, 2023) | OpenAI’s challenge-set evaluation of its former classifier: it labeled 26% of AI-written text as likely AI-written and incorrectly labeled 9% of human-written text as AI-written. | Historical evidence about that classifier only. OpenAI discontinued it on July 20, 2023 because of low accuracy; the figures are not a current benchmark for all detectors. |
| Human passages often above 80% accuracy; AI passages around 50% or slightly higher in many studies (Weber-Wulff et al., 2023) | Discussion of a peer-reviewed evaluation covering 12 public tools plus Turnitin and PlagiarismCheck, with substantial variation by tool and manipulation. | Shows why performance can differ by class and test design. It does not supply a universal threshold for a real-world case. |
| Large AUC and Brier-score differences (NIST 2024 GenAI Pilot Study, published 2025) | NIST tested multiple generators and discriminators across datasets. | Supports system- and dataset-specific benchmarking rather than one “detector accuracy” number. |
False-positive and false-negative rates also depend on prevalence. If genuinely AI-written submissions are rare, even a detector with respectable test performance can produce many more false alarms than confirmed cases. Unless the vendor publishes a calibrated confusion matrix for your population and threshold, do not calculate a person’s guilt from the displayed score.
What evidence is stronger than a detector score?
Evidence that connects the writer to the development of the work is generally more useful than stylistic resemblance.
- Version history: dated saves, tracked changes, and coherent expansion or restructuring over time.
- Planning artifacts: outlines, research questions, reading annotations, calculations, sketches, and decisions that lead to the final thesis.
- Source control: links or bibliographic records, accurate quotations, and notes showing how each important claim was checked.
- Metadata with caution: creation and modification times can support a timeline but are easy to change and should not be treated as proof.
- Content knowledge: a consistent explanation of why sources were chosen, how evidence supports conclusions, and what limitations remain.
- Independent corroboration: earlier work, peer feedback, or a brief supervised task that matches the person’s demonstrated skills.
Weight these items together. A polished final file with no history is not automatically suspicious, and an extensive history can be fabricated or incomplete. The goal is a reasoned record that another reviewer could audit.

How can you compare two AI detectors fairly?
There is no established best detector for every language, genre, and model. Compare tools against your actual use case and document the conditions.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Document support | What minimum and maximum length, file types, and document-level features are supported? |
| Language and genre | Does the vendor validate the language, educational level, code, technical prose, translated text, or other genre you handle? |
| Paraphrase and bypass resistance | Has performance been tested after human editing, translation, or paraphrasing, and are those results independently reported? |
| Thresholds and calibration | Does the score have a documented confidence interpretation, or is it only a relative flag? |
| Reproducibility | Will the same unchanged file receive the same result across runs and software updates? |
| Privacy and retention | Is submitted text stored, used for training, shared with contractors, or deleted on a stated schedule? |
| Auditability | Can you export the full report, model version, highlighted spans, and decision threshold? |
| Consequences | What human review, notice, appeal, and correction process follows a flag? |
For a controlled comparison, prepare representative human and known-generated samples in the same languages and genres, keep length and formatting comparable, run them on the same date, and record versions and outputs. Report results as observations for that test set, not as a promise about every future submission.

Pause the automated conclusion and move to a documented human review. Turnitin states that its AI-writing detection model “may not always be accurate” and should not be the sole basis for adverse action. OpenAI’s educator guidance says detector results are not reliable enough for consequential judgments.
- Notify the person that an automated signal was used and explain its limits.
- Show the relevant report or summary without exposing unrelated private data.
- Invite drafts, notes, citations, and an explanation of the work.
- Check the text’s language, length, genre, and editing history against the detector’s stated coverage.
- Have a qualified reviewer weigh all evidence under the applicable policy.
- Document the reasoning, allow an appeal or correction, and delete retained text when the policy requires it.
Do not require a student or employee to “prove a negative” by reproducing a detector’s preferred style. A fair process tests the allegation while preserving the presumption that a statistical flag is uncertain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What practical warning signs deserve a closer look?
Warning signs should trigger questions, not a verdict. The following combinations are more informative than any single stylistic feature:
- Citations that cannot be located, quote sources inaccurately, or do not support the surrounding claims.
- A timeline that jumps from no planning record to a polished final document without an explanation.
- Technical terms or conclusions the writer cannot define or connect to the cited evidence.
- Contradictions between the assignment requirements, the writer’s notes, and the final answer.
- Large, unexplained changes in voice or subject knowledge within the same document.
Each item has innocent explanations, including collaboration, accessibility tools, translation, or rushed work. Ask open questions and test the explanation against the complete record.

Prefer a controlled environment approved for the data classification. Remove unnecessary names, addresses, identifiers, and confidential source material. Keep an internal copy of the exact text and report so a later reviewer can reproduce what was tested without repeatedly sending the document to third parties.
Can a short oral or written check prove authorship?
No. A supervised explanation can reveal whether someone understands the argument and can perform related work, but it cannot reconstruct every drafting decision or exclude assistance that occurred outside the session. Use it as one corroborating item alongside process records, source quality, and policy-based review.
Design the check around the actual assignment: ask the writer to explain a choice, trace a citation, revise a paragraph for a new audience, or solve a related problem. Offer reasonable accommodations and record the questions and answers consistently for all cases.

What is the defensible bottom line for an authorship decision?
Treat detector output as a prompt for investigation, never as a verdict. The defensible record states what was tested, which limitations applied, what process and content evidence was reviewed, what the writer said, and why the final policy decision followed from the whole record. When the evidence remains mixed, preserve that uncertainty rather than presenting a percentage as certainty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can plagiarism software tell whether AI wrote an essay?
Plagiarism matching and AI-writing classification answer different questions. A similarity report can identify overlapping sources, while an AI classifier estimates stylistic patterns; neither one independently establishes who authored the text. Review citations, drafts, and the writer’s explanation for authorship questions.
Does editing ChatGPT text make it undetectable?
Editing can remove or change the signals a detector uses, but it can also introduce new patterns or factual errors. No detector reliably identifies every edited or paraphrased passage, so claims of guaranteed bypass or guaranteed detection are not justified.
Why does translated writing get flagged as AI?
Translation and second-language writing often produce regular syntax and predictable word choices that overlap with machine-generated patterns. Many detectors have stronger validation for English prose than for other languages, so a translated or multilingual document requires extra caution and stronger reliance on process evidence.
How long should a sample be before testing it?
Use the minimum length documented by the specific service and prefer a complete document when its analysis is designed for document level. A paragraph or a few sentences provide too little context and can produce unstable results, especially when they contain quotations, headings, or procedural language.
