Open the specific game’s Steam store page and find the AI Generated Content Disclosure section. Read the developer’s explanation to learn whether AI-generated material appears in the game, on its store page or in marketing, and whether any content is generated while you play. If the disclosure is missing or unclear, treat that as “no disclosure found”—not proof that the game uses no AI.
What does Steam’s AI disclosure tell you?
Steam asks developers about generative AI through its Content Survey. The resulting disclosure is intended to help customers understand how a product uses AI; Valve says much of a developer’s disclosure will appear on the game’s store page. The label is therefore a useful starting point for a purchase decision, but it is a developer-authored account, not an independent audit of every asset or tool used to make the game.
Steam’s current documentation focuses on AI-created content that ships with a game and is consumed by players. It gives artwork, sound, narrative and localization as examples. The disclosure can also cover AI-generated material presented on the store page or in marketing, so check whether the developer is describing the game itself, its promotional materials, or both.
Valve’s guidance distinguishes content made before release from content generated while the game is running. For live generation, developers must describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal content. That description can help you understand what the developer says it has put in place; it does not establish that the safeguards are effective in every situation.

Steam draws a line between player-facing content and AI tools used to improve development workflow. Its Steamworks Content Survey says, “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” In a January 2026 clarification reported by Game Developer, workflow-only tools such as code helpers do not require disclosure. A game’s page may therefore not tell you whether developers used AI behind the scenes for coding or other efficiency tasks.
How do you find the disclosure on a Steam game page?
Check the store page for the exact game and edition you plan to buy. The section to look for is called AI Generated Content Disclosure; read the full explanation rather than relying only on the presence or absence of a label.
- Open the game’s Steam store page. Make sure it is the specific title you intend to purchase, not a similarly named game or a different product in a series.
- Find “AI Generated Content Disclosure.” Scan the page for that heading. On a desktop browser, the page’s Find function can help locate the exact phrase; if it is not found, inspect the listing before concluding that no disclosure is shown.
- Read the developer’s complete statement. Note what kinds of content it identifies and where that content appears. A short mention of AI may refer to store art rather than assets encountered during play.
- Check when the content is generated. Determine whether the statement describes material created during development and shipped with the game, or material created dynamically while the game runs.
- For live generation, look for guardrails. Steam says developers must describe safeguards intended to prevent illegal content when they disclose live-generated content.
- Resolve anything important that remains unclear. Look for a direct statement from the developer or ask the developer. Record the result as “no disclosure found” if you cannot establish more.
Valve’s January 10, 2024 announcement said that much of the disclosure would be included on the game’s store page so customers could understand how the game uses AI. The announcement is available in Valve’s Steamworks Development post, “AI Content on Steam.”

How should you interpret the developer’s statement?
Separate the disclosure into four questions: where AI is used, what it produces, when that content is generated, and what the developer says about safeguards for live generation. These distinctions are more informative than a simple yes-or-no answer because a disclosure can cover very different uses.

Steam’s official Steamworks Content Survey documentation describes the survey categories and disclosure requirements. Use the developer’s actual wording to understand the scope: do not infer that every asset was generated by AI from a broad statement, or that a statement about marketing applies to in-game content.
Does a missing AI disclosure mean the game uses no generative AI?
No. An absent disclosure establishes only that you did not find one on the listing; it does not prove that no generative AI was used. Steam describes a developer survey and review process, not a public independent audit that verifies the absence of undisclosed AI-generated material.

If the distinction matters to your purchase, check for a direct developer statement or contact the developer with a specific question—for example, whether AI-generated artwork, writing, voice or localization appears in the released game. A precise question is more likely to clarify the use you care about than asking only whether the game “uses AI.” If you still cannot establish the answer, keep the uncertainty explicit.

The disclosure is not a certification that the game is free of other AI-generated material, nor does a completed Content Survey exempt a product from Steam’s content rules. It also does not, by itself, prove the legality or quality of the disclosed content. Treat it as information supplied by the developer, not as a verdict about every part of the product.
Steam notes that after a build and store page have been approved for release, some survey answers cannot be edited without contacting Steam Support. That process detail is one reason not to treat a page’s text as a guarantee that every answer is exhaustive or independently verified.

How can you compare AI disclosures for two games?
Use the same four questions for each listing so the comparison stays focused on the developer’s stated use rather than a vague AI label.
- Compare location: Is AI use described for game content, the store page, marketing, or multiple locations?
- Compare content type: Does the statement identify artwork, sound, narrative, localization, or another kind of player-consumed content?
- Compare timing: Is the content made before release, generated during play, or both?
- Compare live-generation guardrails: If content is generated during play, what safeguards does each developer describe?
Keep unknowns visible. If one page does not disclose an answer, mark that dimension “not stated” rather than assuming the use is absent or treating the two games as equivalent.

Does Steam review the AI disclosure before a game is released?
Valve says the Content Survey is used in pre-release review as well as to help customers understand a product. That describes the survey’s role; it does not mean the public disclosure is an independent audit of the developer’s claims.

Can a developer change an AI disclosure after a game is approved?
Steam says some Content Survey answers cannot be edited after the build and store page are approved for release without contacting Steam Support. This concerns the survey’s editing process, not whether the public statement captures every possible detail.
Does Steam’s AI disclosure determine whether a game follows Steam’s content rules?
No. Steam says completing the survey does not exempt a product from its content rules. The disclosure and the platform’s content requirements are separate matters.
