To check a Palo Alto GlobalProtect gateway, identify whether it runs PAN-OS or Prisma Access, record its exact release, confirm the portal or gateway and Authentication Override cookie settings, and compare the release with the fixed thresholds for CVE-2026-0257. A matching pre-fix release is not enough by itself to establish exposure: the vulnerability also depends on the relevant GlobalProtect and certificate configuration. If the affected conditions are present, apply a fixed release or use the vendor-recommended temporary configuration mitigation while arranging an upgrade. Then review GlobalProtect logs and management-interface exposure for signs of exploitation.

What should you check first?

Check three things together: the product and exact release, whether GlobalProtect is configured, and whether Authentication Override cookies and the relevant certificate configuration meet the affected conditions. CVE-2026-0257 is an actively exploited authentication-bypass vulnerability affecting qualifying GlobalProtect portal or gateway configurations. The Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) described the risk as allowing a remote unauthenticated attacker to bypass security restrictions and establish an unauthorized VPN connection; its 31 May 2026 advisory rates the vulnerability CVSS v3.1 9.1/10.

Do not treat a version number alone as a complete exposure assessment. Conversely, do not assume a firewall is safe simply because an investigation has not yet found suspicious activity: version/configuration assessment and exploitation hunting answer different questions.

Keep the questions separate

  • Is the device in scope? Identify PAN-OS versus Prisma Access and its precise release, then confirm the configuration conditions.
  • Is it fixed? Compare the release against the applicable fixed threshold in the table below.
  • Was it exploited? Examine GlobalProtect logs and relevant indicators, and investigate suspicious events.
  • Is the management interface exposed? Check for unintended access to management services separately from the VPN vulnerability.

Use a repeatable checking order

For a large estate, use the same sequence for every firewall or Prisma Access service. First export or record the software inventory. Next mark whether a portal or gateway exists. Then document cookie generation, cookie acceptance, and the certificate used by Authentication Override. Only after those facts are recorded should you classify the release against the fixed table. Finally, record the mitigation, upgrade, or incident-response action and the evidence supporting that decision. This order prevents a clean-looking version report from hiding an unresolved configuration question.

How do you identify the product, release, and GlobalProtect configuration?

Start with an inventory entry for each affected deployment. Record the device or service identifier, whether it is PAN-OS or Prisma Access, the full software release including every hotfix suffix, and whether it is currently supported. Do not round a release to its major or minor branch: the hotfix level determines whether it falls before a listed fix.

  1. Identify the deployment type. Record whether the deployment is a PAN-OS firewall or Prisma Access. Singapore CSA says Panorama and Cloud NGFW are not impacted by CVE-2026-0257; do not apply the firewall/Prisma Access thresholds to those products as if they were affected deployments.
  2. Record the full release. Capture the displayed release and hotfix exactly as shown by the platform’s software information. If you manage several devices, check every applicable firewall or service rather than relying on a representative device.
  3. Confirm portal and gateway configuration. In the firewall web interface, inspect Network > GlobalProtect > Gateways and Network > GlobalProtect > Portals. CERT-EU cites these paths for verifying GlobalProtect configuration in its review of CVE-2024-3400. Record whether either function is configured; do not assume that a portal and gateway must both exist for the checks to matter.
  4. Inspect Authentication Override cookie settings. For the 2026 CVE, determine whether Authentication Override cookies are enabled, including settings for both cookie generation and cookie acceptance. Identify the certificate involved in that configuration. The affected condition depends on the relevant certificate configuration as well as the GlobalProtect and cookie settings.

The exact screen or control for Authentication Override can vary by release and deployment. Verify both generation and acceptance settings in the applicable configuration rather than using the presence of one cookie-related option as a substitute for a complete review. If you cannot establish which certificate is used or whether both cookie functions are enabled, treat the assessment as unresolved and have the firewall administrator verify it before declaring the system unaffected.

Keep configuration evidence with the inventory record. A screenshot or exported setting that identifies the portal or gateway, both cookie controls, and the certificate makes later review possible after a change. It also helps distinguish a disabled feature from a feature that was never checked.

Which PAN-OS and Prisma Access releases are before the listed fixes?

Use the thresholds in the 31 May 2026 Singapore CSA advisory. A release is in the listed pre-fix range when it is earlier than every applicable fixed threshold for its branch; a threshold can be a fixed hotfix or a later base release. Match the full branch and hotfix, not just the first two version numbers.

Deployment Listed fixed thresholds
PAN-OS 12.1 12.1.4-h6 or 12.1.7
PAN-OS 11.2 11.2.4-h17, 11.2.7-h14, 11.2.10-h7 or 11.2.12
PAN-OS 11.1 11.1.4-h33, 11.1.6-h32, 11.1.7-h6, 11.1.10-h25, 11.1.13-h5 or 11.1.15
PAN-OS 10.2 10.2.7-h34, 10.2.10-h36, 10.2.13-h21, 10.2.16-h7 or 10.2.18-h6
Prisma Access 11.2 11.2.7-h13
Prisma Access 10.2 10.2.10-h36

These are the thresholds listed by CSA on 31 May 2026, not a guarantee that every branch remains supported or that no later advisory changes apply. If your installed release is earlier than the relevant listed threshold, it is in the advisory’s pre-fix range. If the branch is not listed, or the release cannot be matched confidently, consult the applicable current vendor advisory rather than extrapolating a threshold from a different branch.

Do not compare Prisma Access as if it were an on-premises firewall. Its thresholds are listed separately, and a PAN-OS hotfix number cannot be substituted for a Prisma Access value. Likewise, an appliance running Panorama or Cloud NGFW should be recorded as out of scope for this CVE according to CSA, rather than forced into a PAN-OS row.

The CVE applies to configured GlobalProtect portals or gateways when Authentication Override cookies are enabled and the relevant certificate configuration exists. Therefore, use two findings in your assessment: a version finding and a configuration finding. Where both apply, treat the device as vulnerable until remediated; where one is unknown, do not report the check as conclusively clear.

What should you do if the deployment is vulnerable?

Upgrade to the latest supported release that includes the fix for the deployment. If an upgrade cannot be completed immediately, use one of the temporary mitigations recommended by Palo Alto Networks and repeated in the CSA advisory: use a dedicated certificate for Authentication Override cookies, or disable Authentication Override. These mitigations reduce risk while a supported fixed release is prepared; they are not a substitute for verifying and completing the upgrade.

Remediation choice Coverage Speed and service impact What to plan
Upgrade to a supported fixed release Addresses the software vulnerability for the release branch when the fix is included. May require a planned change window; timing depends on the organization’s deployment process. Confirm the target is supported and fixed, plan the change, and verify the installed release afterward.
Use a dedicated Authentication Override certificate Configuration mitigation for the cookie/certificate condition; it does not update PAN-OS. Can be used as a temporary control, but requires careful certificate configuration. Ensure the dedicated certificate is the one used for Authentication Override cookies and verify the resulting settings.
Disable Authentication Override Removes the Authentication Override cookie functionality relevant to the mitigation. May interrupt workflows that depend on Authentication Override. Check service dependencies with GlobalProtect administrators before making the change, and confirm the setting is disabled.

Choose the temporary control in light of service dependencies and how quickly a fixed release can be installed. Disabling Authentication Override may be the more direct emergency action, but workflows relying on it may stop working. A dedicated certificate preserves the feature while changing the certificate arrangement, but the configuration must be verified rather than assumed. Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 says fixes have been available since May 2026 and also recommends either dedicated-certificate use or disabling Authentication Override.

Verify the change, not just the change ticket

After applying a mitigation, recheck the effective configuration and record the result. For a dedicated certificate, confirm that Authentication Override cookie generation and acceptance point to that certificate. For disablement, confirm the feature is actually off and test the GlobalProtect workflows that were expected to change. After an upgrade, record the complete installed release and compare it again with the correct table row. A planned change is not evidence of remediation until the running configuration and release show the intended state.

How can you check whether GlobalProtect was exploited?

Use the investigation to look for successful VPN sessions and suspicious connection details, not only attempted probes. Unit 42 recommends searching GlobalProtect logs for successful gateway-connected events. It reported that only a small portion of probed devices actually established VPN sessions, which makes a successful connection event particularly important to investigate.

Search the logs and review context

  1. Search GlobalProtect logs for successful gateway-connected events during the period the device was in a potentially vulnerable configuration.
  2. Review the full event context. Correlate the time, source address, host ID or device name, user information, and endpoint details available in the event. Treat a matching value as an investigative lead, not as proof by itself.
  3. Check the indicators below. Look for the IP addresses and host/device values identified by Unit 42, along with the associated endpoint OS and domain-field clues.
  4. Escalate suspicious matches. Preserve relevant logs and involve the organization’s incident-response team to assess whether an event represents an unauthorized session.
Indicator type Values to search
Pre-proof-of-concept IP indicators reported by Unit 42 23.128.228[.]6; 104.207.144[.]154; 146.19.216[.]119; 146.19.216[.]120; 146.19.216[.]125; 179.43.172[.]213; 185.195.232[.]139; 198.12.106[.]60; 202.144.192[.]47
Suspicious host IDs or device names aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff; 00:11:22:33:44:55; WINDOWS-LAPTOP-001; DESKTOP-GP01; GP-CLIENT
Proof-of-concept-associated endpoint value endpoint_os_version: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Proof-of-concept-associated user-information value An empty source_user_info.domain field

The IP addresses are shown in the defanged format used for threat indicators. Preserve the formatting when using them in reports; if your security tooling requires standard address syntax for a search, convert them carefully in the search interface rather than copying an indicator into a browser or another system as a link.

A match warrants investigation, but the cited indicators do not establish that every listed address or host string uniquely identifies exploitation. Likewise, the absence of a match does not establish that no compromise occurred: available log coverage, retention, and the investigation period affect what can be confirmed. Record the time span and data sources checked so incident responders know the limits of a negative result.

Could the management interface also be exposed?

Yes. Unit 42 describes recurring accidental exposure when GlobalProtect profiles are mapped to HTTP or HTTPS services on a management interface. This is a separate exposure check; it does not determine whether CVE-2026-0257’s version and configuration conditions apply.

Administrators can test the management IP out of band on ports 4443 and 3879, then restrict access with interface-management profiles. Perform the check only against systems you administer or are authorized to assess, and use an out-of-band method as Unit 42 advises. If those services are reachable where they should not be, review the interface-management profile and access controls rather than treating a software upgrade alone as a correction for the exposure.

Should you check older PAN-OS systems for CVE-2024-3400 too?

Yes, if your estate includes the affected older release branches. CVE-2024-3400 was a critical PAN-OS GlobalProtect command-injection vulnerability rated CVSS 10.0 by CERT-EU. Its affected condition was a configured GlobalProtect gateway or portal on the specified pre-fix releases; it is a separate vulnerability from the 2026 authentication bypass.

PAN-OS branch Pre-fix range identified by CERT-EU Listed fixed release
10.2 Before 10.2.9-h1 10.2.9-h1
11.0 Before 11.0.4-h1 11.0.4-h1
11.1 Before 11.1.2-h3 11.1.2-h3

For this legacy check, CERT-EU says to verify the GlobalProtect configuration at Network > GlobalProtect > Gateways or Network > GlobalProtect > Portals. The United Kingdom National Cyber Security Centre’s 22 April 2024 advice was to monitor the vendor advisory, apply the update or temporary mitigation, and conduct continuous monitoring and threat hunting. Assess CVE-2024-3400 against its own release thresholds and advisory; do not use its older fixes as evidence that CVE-2026-0257 is fixed.

What should a complete assessment record?

A short, auditable record makes it easier to decide which devices need emergency action and which findings need incident response. For each deployment, note:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Product type and device or service identifier.
  • Exact release and hotfix, support status, and the applicable fixed threshold used for comparison.
  • Whether GlobalProtect portal or gateway is configured.
  • Whether Authentication Override cookie generation and acceptance are enabled, and which certificate is involved.
  • The mitigation or fixed release selected, the change status, and any service workflow affected by disabling Authentication Override.
  • Which logs, time period, and Unit 42 indicators were checked, plus suspicious matches and incident-response disposition.
  • Whether management services were checked out of band on ports 4443 and 3879, and whether access was restricted with interface-management profiles.
  • For applicable legacy devices, the separate CVE-2024-3400 version/configuration result.

Enterprise vulnerability management can complement this device-by-device review with authenticated and unauthenticated SCAP-compliant vulnerability scanning, an approach recommended by MS-ISAC. Scanning helps identify assets and software conditions; it does not replace confirmation of the Authentication Override certificate settings or review of GlobalProtect session logs.

Common checking mistakes

  • Checking only the major version: a hotfix suffix can be the difference between a pre-fix and fixed release.
  • Checking only the portal: inspect both portal and gateway areas and record which functions are configured.
  • Assuming a probe is a breach: distinguish attempted probes from gateway-connected sessions.
  • Calling an unknown setting safe: unresolved cookie or certificate details require administrator verification.
  • Using a mitigation as a permanent answer: a dedicated certificate or disabled feature reduces immediate exposure but does not place PAN-OS on a supported fixed release.
  • Ignoring management services: an upgrade does not correct an accidentally exposed management interface profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the CVSS 9.1 score mean for CVE-2026-0257?

Singapore CSA assigns CVE-2026-0257 a CVSS v3.1 score of 9.1 out of 10. The score describes the vulnerability’s rated severity; it does not tell you whether a particular firewall has the affected configuration or whether it has been compromised.

Why check both authenticated and unauthenticated vulnerability scans?

MS-ISAC recommends authenticated and unauthenticated SCAP-compliant scanning as part of enterprise vulnerability management. The two approaches can contribute to asset and vulnerability visibility, but neither alone verifies the cookie-generation, cookie-acceptance, and certificate conditions that matter for this check.

Does a probe against my gateway mean an attacker established a VPN session?

Not necessarily. Unit 42 reported that only a small portion of probed devices actually established VPN sessions and generated gateway-connected events, so a probe and a successful connection are distinct findings. Investigate the session evidence and surrounding event details rather than treating every probe as a confirmed unauthorized VPN connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Panorama and Cloud NGFW included in the CVE-2026-0257 check?

Singapore CSA says Panorama and Cloud NGFW are not impacted by CVE-2026-0257. Record those products separately and do not apply the PAN-OS or Prisma Access threshold table to them.

Which temporary mitigation should be used first?

There is no universal choice. Disabling Authentication Override is direct but can break workflows that depend on it. A dedicated certificate can preserve the feature while changing the certificate arrangement, but it requires careful verification. Select the option that fits service dependencies while scheduling a supported fixed upgrade.

What does an empty source_user_info.domain field indicate?

Unit 42 identifies an empty source_user_info.domain field as associated with proof-of-concept activity. It is an investigation clue that should be correlated with the event time, source address, host identifiers, and gateway-connected status; it is not conclusive proof by itself.

How do I check whether management services are exposed?

Use an authorized out-of-band test against the management IP on ports 4443 and 3879. If either service is reachable unexpectedly, review the interface-management profile and restrict access. This is separate from determining whether the GlobalProtect CVE conditions apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact PAN-OS or Prisma Access release, verify GlobalProtect and Authentication Override certificate settings, and compare both facts with the applicable CSA thresholds. Patch to a supported fixed release; until then, use a dedicated Authentication Override certificate or disable Authentication Override. Independently hunt gateway-connected events, review Unit 42 indicators, and test management-interface exposure on ports 4443 and 3879.
