Start with the game’s current store-page disclosure, copy its exact wording, and note the date you checked. Then compare it with developer statements, credits, production records, and any provenance signals supported by the original files. A disclosure is the developer’s account—not an independent audit—and neither a detector result nor a visual clue proves that a particular asset or code change was made with AI.
What can you actually establish?
You can often establish that a developer publicly disclosed a particular kind of AI use, or that a production record connects AI assistance to a shipped asset or code change. You may also find a supported provenance signal associated with a file. Those are different findings, and none automatically establishes the complete production history of a game.
Be precise about the scope. “The developer disclosed AI-generated background art” is a narrower and more informative statement than “the game was made with AI.” The latter could be taken to mean that all of its art, writing, sound, or code was generated, even when the available evidence only concerns one content category or workflow.

How do I check a game’s Steam disclosure?
Inspect the current Steam store page and search its text for “AI,” “generative,” or “Generated.” Record what the developer says, when you checked, and the type of use described; treat the statement as a starting point to corroborate, not as an independent audit.
- Open the game’s current store listing. Search the page text for “AI,” “generative,” and “Generated.” A disclosure’s placement or wording can change, so record the date as well as the page you checked.
- Copy the exact statement. Preserve the wording rather than paraphrasing it into a broader claim. Note whether the statement identifies particular content, such as art, sound, or writing.
- Classify when the generation happens. Distinguish content made during development from content generated while the game runs. Note if the statement describes both.
- Compare the statement with updates. Check relevant patch notes or developer updates for later additions or changes. A newer disclosure may describe content added after the original release rather than the game as it first shipped.
- State the limits of the check. If you find no statement, report “no confirmed public disclosure found as of [date checked]” and say what you checked. Do not convert silence into a claim that the game used no AI.
Steam’s developer survey distinguishes categories of AI use, but a public disclosure remains a statement by the developer. It does not establish that the statement covers every shipped asset or code change, and an absent, incomplete, changed, or narrow disclosure cannot settle what happened outside its stated scope.
How should I distinguish different kinds of AI use?
Describe the specific content and stage of production, rather than applying one label to the whole game. Background art created during development, dialogue generated during play, and code assistance are separate claims that require separate evidence.

Do not infer that a game’s art, writing, or code was AI-generated just because a different category was disclosed. Likewise, a disclosure about material used in marketing or community posts does not, by itself, establish that the same process was used for content inside the game.
How can I corroborate a disclosure?
Look for records that identify what was used and where it went. The strongest corroboration connects a particular tool or assisted output to a specific shipped file, build, or code change; general statements about a studio’s workflow may not establish that connection.
- Developer or publisher statements: Look for explanations of what was generated, what people selected or changed, and where the result appeared.
- Credits and production material: Check credits, production diaries, asset lists, tool disclosures, and build notes for details that can be compared with the public statement.
- Media records: If the question concerns an image, sound, or voice, ask which shipped file is at issue, which tool was used, and how people reviewed or modified the output. Where relevant, look for licensing and voice or likeness consent records.
- Code records: Look for a postmortem, repository history, or build documentation that says whether assisted code reached the released product. A statement that a developer experimented with a tool is not, on its own, evidence that its output shipped.
Not every game makes these records public. If a question about a particular asset, tool, contributor, or build cannot be answered from available material, mark that part unresolved instead of filling the gap with an inference.

What should you ask about a specific asset?
Turn a broad suspicion into a file-level question. Identify the image, texture, portrait, voice line, music cue, localization string, or interface element by name or location. Then ask which version shipped, whether an AI system produced any part of it, which tool or service was involved, and what human editing occurred afterward.
For voices and likenesses, ask whether the performer consented to the relevant use and whether the record covers the shipped language and version. For music, sound effects, and writing, distinguish a generated draft from a final recording or text that was substantially rewritten. For marketing images, verify whether the questioned material appears only in a trailer or store capsule rather than in the game itself. These distinctions prevent a true statement about one file from being expanded into a claim about every asset.
What can a finished build tell you about code?
A compiled executable shows behavior, not the full history of how the source was written. Similar code can result from a human developer, a template, a library, procedural generation, or assisted drafting. Gameplay feel, variable names, comments, or an apparent coding style cannot reliably identify an AI tool.
Use the strongest available connection to the shipped build: a dated repository change, a release branch, a postmortem naming the assisted component, or build documentation that maps source changes to the released version. If a developer says an assistant was used for brainstorming or a discarded prototype, that does not show that generated code entered production. Conversely, a public repository may omit private branches or generated snippets, so describe exactly what its history does and does not cover.
What do provenance checks and AI detectors tell you?
Provenance checks can identify certain supported signals; they are not universal detectors. A positive result should be described in terms of the specific issuer or signal the service identifies, while a negative result means only that the service did not find a signal it supports.

C2PA Content Credentials can attach signed metadata describing origin and edits when the credential is present and supported. Microsoft describes its service as checking supported Microsoft provenance, including C2PA manifests and Microsoft watermark signals. OpenAI documents checks for supported C2PA and SynthID signals. These services have defined coverage: their results do not establish who wrote a prompt, identify an individual creator, reconstruct a complete edit history, or determine legal status.

- Use the original file where possible. A store-page image or a screenshot may not be the same file used to create or ship the asset.
- Check what the service supports. Read the result as a claim about a supported credential, watermark, or other signal—not as a verdict on all possible AI providers.
- Record the signal and issuer. Do not describe a result more broadly than the service does. A signal does not automatically identify a prompt, person, complete workflow, or rights status.
- Interpret a no-signal result narrowly. It does not prove that the file was made without AI. The signal may be absent, unsupported, or no longer detectable.
Screenshots, compression, cropping, re-encoding, or metadata removal can weaken or erase provenance signals. A checker’s negative result may therefore reflect limitations of the file or the service, rather than the way the asset was created.
Can appearance or a detector score prove that an asset is AI-made?
No. A strange-looking image, voice, or detector score can be a reason to ask questions, but it cannot establish authorship on its own.
Unusual lettering, distorted anatomy, inconsistent shadows, repeated patterns, or an unexpected voice may have many possible causes. Human work, procedural tools, stock assets, processing, and post-production can produce similar clues. Treat appearance as a lead for checking a specific file or asking for records—not as a conclusion about a game or its creators.

Several detector results do not necessarily amount to independent confirmation, especially if the tools share limited coverage or are assessing the same ambiguous signal. When reporting a result, name the file and tool checked, describe the tool’s limits, and identify any corroborating evidence.
How should I handle missing or conflicting evidence?
Record the conflict instead of choosing the more dramatic explanation. A store page may describe one category while a developer interview describes another, or a patch may add runtime generation after launch. Note the dates, identify which build each statement concerns, and limit the conclusion to the overlapping facts.
If a production record is private, say that it was not available for verification. If a file was re-encoded before checking, explain that the provenance test covered the copy you obtained, not necessarily the original. If a developer changes wording, preserve both versions with their dates. This creates an auditable timeline without implying that the later statement proves what was true at launch.

How should I report the result and its confidence?
Separate the developer’s statement, any technical signal, independent production records, and the questions that remain open. Choose wording that matches the strongest evidence you actually have, and state what you checked.

If the store page is silent, use “no confirmed public disclosure found as of [date checked]” and describe the scope of your search—not “no AI use.” If independent records align but do not identify the exact files or code changes, say so. Keep the original wording and date with your notes so a later change can be distinguished from what was public when you checked.
How can I compare two games fairly?
Use the same date range and the same categories for both games. Otherwise, a narrow disclosure about development-time artwork can be made to look equivalent to runtime dialogue generation or code assistance, even though those describe different uses.
- Where AI appears: Record whether the claim concerns art, sound or voice, writing, localization, interface, code workflow, marketing, or runtime generation.
- When generation happens: Distinguish development-time material from content generated while the game runs.
- What players encounter: Separate content shipped in the game from store, marketing, or community material, and from interactive generation.
- What is disclosed: Preserve exact wording, the date checked, any named tools or assets, and later changes to the statement.
- What supports the claim: Note available contributor, source, licensing, and voice or likeness consent records where relevant.
- How certain the conclusion is: Separate direct statements, independent corroboration, plausible clues, and unconfirmed claims.
This framework makes clear what the evidence is about. Code assistance does not establish that art or writing was generated, and a disclosure about background art does not establish that dialogue is generated during play.

Before you write a conclusion, make sure a reader could distinguish what was disclosed from what was independently supported and what remains unknown.
- Name the game, platform, build, and specific asset, content category, or code workflow being discussed.
- Save the exact store-page wording, its URL or page identity, and the date and time checked.
- Mark whether the claim concerns pre-generated material, runtime generation, or both.
- List developer statements, credits, production records, repository commits, postmortems, or build documentation that bear on the claim.
- For media, identify the original file, any transformations made before checking, and any licensing or consent information that is actually documented.
- For provenance, record the service, issuer, credential or watermark type, file hash or filename when practical, and the precise result.
- Write down negative findings as limited statements: no supported signal found, no public record located, or no confirmed disclosure as of the check date.
- Assign a confidence label and make every sentence no broader than the evidence.
Steam disclosures, store-page wording, and provenance-service coverage can change. Repeat the store-page and supported-signal checks after a material game update, and date each check so readers can tell whether a statement describes the current build or an earlier point in the game’s release history.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI disclosure prove that a game’s assets are properly licensed?
No. A disclosure can describe reported AI use, but it does not by itself establish the rights or permissions associated with a particular output. Those questions require relevant licensing and consent records, which may not be publicly available.
Can a developer correct or change an AI disclosure after launch?
A store-page statement can change, and a later version may describe a new feature or a corrected account. Preserve the wording and date from each check so you can distinguish what was stated at different points rather than treating the latest text as a record of every past build.
If a detector finds a watermark, does that identify the person who made the asset?
Not necessarily. A supported watermark or credential may indicate a particular signal or issuer, but that result alone does not identify an individual creator or establish the full chain of editing and contribution.

Can I prove AI-generated code by decompiling the game?
Not reliably. A finished executable shows compiled behavior, not the complete writing history of the source. Seek a developer statement, repository history, postmortem, or build documentation connecting assistance to code in the released product.
Is AI-generated background art the same as runtime AI dialogue?
No. Background art made during development is pre-generated content, while dialogue produced during play is live generation. Record the category, timing, and player exposure separately.
Are several detector results enough to confirm AI use?
Not automatically. Tools may have overlapping or limited coverage and can assess the same ambiguous signal. Name each file and tool, explain limitations, and look for a first-party statement or production record.

What if the only copy I can check is a screenshot?
Treat the result as limited to that copy. Cropping, compression, re-encoding, or metadata removal can erase provenance signals, so obtain the original file when possible and state what version you examined.
The Bottom Line
Check the current disclosure, preserve its wording and date, identify the exact content category and production stage, and corroborate it with file-level provenance and production records. Report only what those sources support: a missing disclosure, a detector score, or a visual oddity is not proof that a game’s assets or code were made with AI.
