Go to the official source yourself
Open the game’s known store or publisher website directly, rather than following a link in a message, search ad, or pop-up. Check the spelling of the domain and confirm that the page is the expected game listing. Steam advises downloading software from its official source and warns that malicious software can be linked from platforms or people you normally trust. Its account-security guidance lists official Steam login domains, but those are Steam-specific and are not a universal way to validate other stores: Steam Support: Account Security Recommendations.

Match the game and publisher
Compare the title and publisher shown on the download page with the official listing. A mismatched or unfamiliar publisher, or a page that redirects you to a separate installer, is reason to pause. Matching details are useful screening checks, not proof that a file is safe.

Check whether the offer and site make sense
An unusually low price or missing legal notice can be a warning sign of a dubious source, according to Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Neither is conclusive on its own, but both warrant checking the seller and listing against the publisher’s official channels. BSI: Gaming security.

Watch for unrelated software and suspicious requests
Be cautious if a download bundles an unexpected launcher or utility, or is presented as a cheat, pirated copy, or fake demo or beta. Steam identifies these kinds of gaming-related offers and software as possible disguises for malware. Do not disable antivirus or grant excessive permissions just because an installer asks you to; Australian Cyber Security Centre guidance recommends avoiding software that makes suspicious permission requests or recommends turning off antivirus. Stop if security software raises an alert
Do not install the file or create an exception simply to get past an unexplained warning. Antivirus can produce false positives, but Steam says to take a trusted provider’s warning seriously; if you are unsure, contact the provider. Steam also explains how to report a questionable app and verify game-file integrity for games in its platform. Steam Support: Antivirus software reports Steam games are malicious.

What an antivirus scan can—and cannot—tell you
Keep security software and its definitions current, and scan when appropriate, but treat that as an additional safeguard rather than an authenticity check. Steam cautions that malware can be tailored to evade common antivirus detection. A clean scan therefore cannot establish that the download came from the legitimate publisher or that it is safe; check the source first. Steam Support: Account Security Recommendations.

Do not install the game. The BSI’s guidance is direct: “If you don’t know the source or if the game has been illegally downloaded, you should not install it.” Find the game through the publisher’s site or an official store instead.
