Before comparing prices, confirm which RAM or SSD your computer supports. Then compare equivalent parts, use price-per-gigabyte as a screening tool, and check recent price history and the live listing near checkout. A low price is not a good deal if the component will not fit or its specifications differ.

1. Confirm what your computer supports

Compatibility comes first: identify the part your PC can use before looking for a bargain. Check your computer or motherboard documentation and the component manufacturer’s compatibility tools. Kingston recommends using memory configurators and checking compatibility guarantees where available; its memory guide also advises considering support, warranty and returns.

For RAM

  • Confirm the memory generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5. These are not interchangeable.
  • Check the module type, supported capacity, speed and any system limits in the computer or motherboard documentation.
  • When comparing kits, match the specifications that matter to your system, including capacity and speed. Do not assume a faster or larger kit is supported.

For SSDs

  • Check whether your system supports NVMe, SATA or both. They are distinct categories, not interchangeable labels.
  • Confirm the physical form factor and connection: for example, whether the computer has the compatible M.2 slot or drive bay.
  • Compare drives only after checking the system documentation for supported interface and installation requirements.

If you cannot establish the supported specifications, identify the computer or motherboard model and check its documentation or manufacturer support before buying. A model-specific recommendation requires those details.

2. Compare equivalent parts

Once you know the supported type, compare products with matching capacity and relevant specifications. For RAM, compare the same generation and module type as well as speed and capacity. For SSDs, compare the same interface and form factor, then capacity and other specifications relevant to your intended use.

Price per GB can help screen listings of different capacities within the same segment. MemRadar’s RAM tracker displays this measure and describes capacity as a fair way to compare differently sized products. It is not a substitute for matching generation, interface, speed or compatibility: a lower price per GB does not make a different class of component equivalent.

Also check the exact model and the purchase terms. Warranty, manufacturer support, return conditions and any compatibility guarantee can change the value of an otherwise similar listing. Confirm these details on the live retailer listing and in the manufacturer’s documentation.

3. Check price history and the live offer

Compare the current price with the same product’s recent history, where available. A dated index can also provide context for broader market movement, but it does not establish whether a particular SKU is at its lowest price. Kingston Technology’s The Ultimate Memory Guide, in its “When Buying Memory” section, gives this advice: “The best rule of thumb is to compare memory prices close to your time of purchase.” Its guide notes that demand, DRAM manufacturing levels, marketplace inventory, seasonality, new operating-system releases and computer sales can affect memory prices.

  1. Find the exact compatible part and note its full model identifier.
  2. Check that model’s price history, if the tracker covers it, and note the dates and retailers represented.
  3. Compare the current offer with that history and with equivalent listings, not merely with a different product in the same broad category.
  4. Before checkout, reopen the retailer listing and verify the current price, availability, shipping, warranty and return terms.

4. Understand what the trackers measure

Price indexes can differ because they track different products and retailers and use different calculations. MemRadar describes medians across its tracked products, Amazon price history licensed from Keepa, and Newegg prices from an official Rakuten Advertising product feed. RamList says its indexes use the cheapest available price among tracked retailers and exclude Amazon. Their figures are not directly interchangeable.

MemRadar’s index reports that 235 RAM and SSD products were tracked and last computed on October 3, 2026. It reports DDR5 prices up 327.9% year over year in its tracked segment; that is the publisher’s result for its tracked products, not a universal price census. Its September 2026 basket was $1,066 for a 32GB DDR5-6000 kit, a 1TB NVMe SSD and a 2TB NVMe SSD; MemRadar describes these as regular Amazon listing prices, not deals. Its September 2026 DDR4-board comparison basket was $410 for a 32GB DDR4-3200 kit and a 1TB NVMe SSD. These are dated basket figures, not current quotes or recommended builds.

MemRadar says its index uses medians, a changing tracked catalog and different cohort sizes over longer windows, so treat the figures as context rather than a fixed-market measure. RamList’s daily-updated indexes use their own tracked retailer set and exclude Amazon from calculations. Check each service’s methodology and coverage before interpreting a trend; neither broad index replaces checking the exact listing close to purchase.

5. Use a practical comparison checklist

  • Compatibility: Is this generation or interface, capacity, speed and form factor supported by your computer?
  • Like-for-like comparison: Are the model, capacity and relevant specifications equivalent?
  • Price: What is the current price, and what is the price per GB within the same product segment?
  • Time and coverage: Does the history cover the exact product, and which retailers and dates does the tracker include?
  • Purchase conditions: What warranty, support, compatibility guarantee and return terms apply?
  • Final check: Does the live listing still show the price and availability you compared?

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
