You can estimate how much of your pension is invested in AI companies by identifying every fund in your pension, finding its latest holdings disclosure, classifying holdings as direct or broader AI-linked exposure, and weighting each estimate by that fund’s share of your pot. The result is your own estimate—not usually a figure published for your personal pension—and it is only as complete as the holdings data behind it. This guide focuses on UK pensions; disclosure and scheme arrangements vary.
What does “invested in AI companies” mean?
It can mean a direct investment in a company that develops AI models, software, or products, or a broader investment in businesses and infrastructure that support AI. Those are different kinds of exposure, so a useful estimate should keep them separate rather than combine them into one apparently exact percentage.
A direct category might include companies whose main business includes AI development or specialist AI products. A broader category could include semiconductor manufacturers, cloud-computing providers, data-centre operators, networking businesses, power companies, utilities, or real-estate assets linked to data centres. The boundary is a judgement call: a company may have an AI product without depending on AI for most of its revenue, and a company outside the technology sector may still benefit from AI demand.

It cautions that a diversified portfolio can still carry hidden concentration because AI is embedded across sectors. That means a technology-sector label alone is not a complete screen for AI-linked exposure.

For a meaningful result, state the classification you used. For example, report “direct AI exposure” separately from “broader AI-linked exposure,” and explain which types of companies you included in each. These are analytical categories, not standard labels that every pension provider applies in the same way.
How do I identify the funds in my pension?
Start with the investments actually held in your account, not just the name of your pension provider or scheme. A workplace pension may hold one retirement-date fund or several funds, and a broad label such as “Global Equity” does not identify the fund’s underlying companies.
- Sign in to your pension account. Find the page or statement showing your current investments. Record the provider and scheme, each fund’s full name, and whether it is a target retirement-date or lifestyle fund.
- Record the allocation. Note the current pot value and the percentage of your pot invested in each fund. If the account shows a monetary amount instead of a percentage, calculate the percentage as that fund’s value divided by the total pension value, multiplied by 100.
- Check for funds held through another fund. Some pension options invest in an underlying pooled vehicle. Record the underlying fund name if it is shown; a top-level fund label may not reveal the companies held beneath it.
- Include every investment account that belongs in your calculation. If you have separate workplace and personal pensions, estimate each separately before combining them. Do not treat a provider’s general fund list as proof that you personally hold every fund on it.
Keep a simple working record before looking up holdings:
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Provider and scheme | Identifies where to request information if an online account does not provide it. |
| Exact fund name and, if available, share class or identifier | Helps distinguish similar funds with different holdings or charges. |
| Current value or share of the pot | Needed to calculate how much that fund contributes to the whole pension’s exposure. |
| Holdings date and document date | Shows how recent the company data is and when it was published. |
Where can I find a fund’s holdings?
Look for the newest document that lists individual investments, and check what it covers before using its figures. A factsheet, holdings spreadsheet, fund report, or provider holdings portal may be more useful for this task than a short product summary.
- Provider holdings portal or downloadable spreadsheet: These may let you search by company or download a complete list. Nest, for example, says its online tool lists companies and that its company data is refreshed every three months. Its quarterly investment reports also cover property, government bonds, and other investment types.
- Factsheet: A fund factsheet often shows a snapshot of the largest holdings and broad asset allocation. Check whether it contains the entire portfolio or only selected information.
- Key Information Document or Key Investor Information Document: A KID or KIID can help identify a fund and understand its general features, but it may not provide the full company-by-company holdings you need.
- Annual or half-year report: These reports may contain more detailed portfolio information. Their reporting date can be older than the date you download them, so note both.
- Scheme or trustee material: A workplace scheme may publish information at scheme level or direct members to an investment portal. A scheme-level report is not necessarily a complete, current inventory for your particular fund.
For UK portfolio disclosures, FCA portfolio fields include an asset’s name, ISIN or other identifier, asset class, domicile, country exposure, and percentage of the portfolio. These fields help distinguish a company from a similarly named security and show the weight assigned to it. A company list, however, may not include every type of asset in the fund.

How do I check whether the holdings data is complete and current?
Write down two dates: the date the portfolio holdings were measured (“as at” or “holdings as at”) and the date the document was published. A report published recently can still describe an older portfolio snapshot.
Then check the scope. Determine whether the document covers the whole fund, equities only, a top-ten list, or an underlying pooled vehicle. If it only gives the top ten, it cannot support a complete company-level percentage. If it lists only equities, it will not establish exposure through bonds, property, derivatives, private assets, or cash.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use this checklist before adding any weights:
- Does the document match the exact fund or share class in your account?
- Is there a specific portfolio date as well as a publication date?
- Does it list every holding, or only the largest positions?
- Does its scope include the whole fund or only one asset class?
- Are pooled funds or other underlying investments listed in enough detail to look through them?
- Are any holdings marked as derivatives, private assets, cash, or other categories that do not appear in a company list?
Holdings can change after their reported date. Treat a calculation based on a dated snapshot as an estimate for that snapshot, not as a live measurement of what is in your pension today. If you cannot establish the scope, describe the result as incomplete rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.
How do I calculate direct and broader AI exposure?
Use the percentage weights in the fund’s disclosure, applying your stated classification rule to each holding. Add the weights in the direct category, then separately add the weights you count as broader AI-linked exposure.
- Choose and record your categories. Decide what qualifies as direct AI exposure and what counts as an enabling or otherwise AI-linked business. Apply the same rule to every fund you compare.
- Match holdings carefully. Use the company name and, where available, its ISIN or other identifier. Avoid counting a holding twice because it appears under a fund name and an underlying security name.
- Add the portfolio weights. If holdings are given as percentages, add the relevant disclosed weights. If the disclosure uses another unit, convert consistently before summing.
- Label the coverage. State the holdings date, the document’s scope, and any missing positions. If the source gives only a top-ten list or an equities subset, your total is not a full-fund exposure estimate.
For example, if a hypothetical fund’s disclosed holdings include 5% in companies you classify as direct AI businesses and 12% in additional companies or infrastructure you classify as AI-linked enablers, report 5% direct and 17% broader AI-linked only if your broader figure is defined to include the direct category. To avoid ambiguity, you could instead label the latter “direct plus enabling exposure.” These figures are illustrative arithmetic, not a claim about any named pension fund.

Do not describe a partial list as an exact percentage. If a provider discloses only the largest holdings, the sum of identified AI-related holdings may be a lower bound: additional relevant companies may sit outside the list. If the source omits whole asset types or underlying pooled funds, the missing exposure may not be quantifiable from that document.

How do I calculate exposure across my whole pension pot?
Weight each fund’s estimate by the proportion of your pension invested in that fund, then add the contributions. This prevents a small fund holding from being treated as though it represents your entire pension.
Fund contribution to pot exposure = fund’s share of your pot × that fund’s estimated exposure.
Use percentages as decimals in the multiplication, or convert the result back to percentage points. For instance, if Fund A is 60% of your pot and has an estimated 8% direct AI exposure, its contribution is 4.8 percentage points of the whole pot: 0.60 × 0.08 = 0.048. Repeat for every fund and add the contributions to get the overall estimate for that category.
| Fund | Share of pension pot | Estimated direct AI exposure within fund | Contribution to pot estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fund A | 60% | 8% | 4.8 percentage points |
| Fund B | 40% | 2% | 0.8 percentage points |
| Total | 100% | — | 5.6% estimated direct exposure |
The table is an arithmetic example, not a provider-published personal figure. For your own result, preserve each fund’s holdings date and coverage notes. If fund allocations have changed since the holdings snapshot, the result combines information from different dates and should be presented as an approximation.

How should I compare two pension funds for AI exposure?
Compare like with like: use the same holdings date where possible, apply the same classification rule, and distinguish a full portfolio from a partial list. A single headline percentage does not show whether the funds have similar concentration, diversification, disclosure quality, or indirect exposure.
| Comparison | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Direct AI weight | Weights of holdings you classify as direct AI businesses | Shows the narrower, more readily explained category under your chosen rule. |
| Broader enabling-sector weight | Relevant exposure through semiconductors, cloud, data centres, networking, power, utilities, or related assets | Captures possible indirect links that a technology-only screen can miss. |
| Largest holding and top-ten concentration | The largest position and combined weight of the ten largest holdings, if disclosed | Shows whether exposure is concentrated in a few companies rather than spread across many smaller positions. |
| Overlap between funds | Companies appearing in more than one fund | Different fund names do not necessarily mean different underlying holdings; overlap can increase combined exposure. |
| Geography and currency | Country exposure and, where disclosed, relevant currency exposure | AI-related companies and infrastructure can be concentrated in particular markets, creating exposures beyond the industry label. |
| Passive or active management | Whether the strategy follows an index or selects investments actively | TPR notes that market-capitalisation-weighted passive strategies can become more concentrated as related companies rise. |
| Charges | Fund and scheme charges disclosed for the options being compared | AI exposure is only one part of a fund choice; costs affect the investment decision separately. |
| Disclosure completeness and update frequency | Full holdings or partial disclosure, and how often the provider updates it | A more complete, more recent disclosure can support a more reliable estimate. |
Do not infer that a fund is safer or better solely because its estimated direct AI percentage is lower. A lower figure could reflect different sectors, geography, asset types, or incomplete disclosure; and broader AI-linked exposure can exist outside a company’s formal sector classification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can the published figures tell me about the wider issue?
TPR’s guidance, AI concentration risk: Action for trustees, published on 22 October 2026, says AI-linked companies are becoming a large share of major indices and asks trustees to understand aggregate exposure across a scheme and test a severe but plausible AI-related downturn. It states: “Even a diversified portfolio may have hidden concentration risk because AI is increasingly embedded across sectors.” This is guidance for trustees, not a published calculation of an individual member’s pension.
TPR’s accompanying 2026 press release reports that global private AI investment rose 127.5% year on year in 2025. That is a market statistic; it does not indicate that any particular pension, scheme, or member has a corresponding level of exposure.

What should I do if my provider does not show company holdings?
Ask for the underlying information rather than asking only for a headline AI percentage. Providers may not calculate AI exposure, but they may be able to direct you to a holdings file or explain the reporting scope and date.
- Contact the pension provider. Give the exact fund name and ask for the latest full holdings disclosure, including the holdings date, portfolio scope, and any underlying pooled funds.
- For a workplace scheme, ask the trustees or independent governance committee. Request look-through holdings for the investment option you use, and ask how often those holdings are updated.
- Ask your employer to direct the request. An employer may be able to identify the scheme contact or the correct member information channel, though it may not hold the investment data itself.
- Check whether a member dashboard exists. Some schemes publish company-level transparency tools. For example, the London Pension Fund Authority’s Tumelo dashboard displayed individual equity company names and biographies and was updated quarterly. The LPFA reported a £6.9 billion fund, approximately 45% equities, and 93,000 members in 2022; those scheme-level figures do not describe every member’s individual allocation.
- Keep a record of the answer. Note which funds and asset classes are covered, the date of the holdings, and any categories that were not disclosed. If you receive only a top-holdings list, mark the estimate as partial.
A clear request might read: “Please provide the latest full holdings disclosure for [fund name], including the portfolio as-at date, whether the disclosure covers the whole fund or equities only, and details of any underlying pooled funds. If full look-through holdings are unavailable, please confirm which holdings or asset classes are excluded and how often this information is updated.”
What are the main pitfalls when estimating AI exposure?
The largest source of error is treating a partial, dated snapshot as a live, whole-pension figure. Be explicit about what the calculation does and does not include.
- Using only a fund label: “Global Equity” or “Retirement Fund” does not identify underlying companies.
- Confusing publication date with portfolio date: The document may describe holdings from months earlier.
- Treating a top-ten list as a full portfolio: Undisclosed smaller positions may include relevant businesses.
- Ignoring look-through limits: A fund may hold another pooled fund whose company-level holdings are not provided.
- Counting only technology: AI-linked exposure may involve infrastructure, energy, real estate, and financial assets.
- Combining direct and indirect exposure without a definition: Readers cannot interpret a percentage unless they know what was included.
- Assuming every AI-related company has the same dependence on AI: A company’s AI activity may be a small or large part of its business; a simple holdings weight does not measure revenue dependence or future performance.
- Adding fund percentages without weighting them by your pot allocation: The overall answer must reflect how much of your pension each fund represents.
A careful result should state the estimate, category, holdings date, source scope, calculation method, and known exclusions. If information is missing, use terms such as “identified minimum” or “partial estimate,” not “exact exposure.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my annual pension statement show my investments in AI companies?
Usually, a statement is designed to show account value, contributions, and fund choices rather than a complete company-by-company portfolio. Use it to identify the funds you hold, then look for the provider’s separate holdings disclosures or request them from the scheme.
Does a pension fund holding an AI company mean my pension depends on AI?
Not by itself. A fund’s holding weight measures the share of the portfolio invested in a security, not how much that company’s earnings rely on AI or how sensitive the share price is to AI developments.
Can I switch my pension fund because it has AI exposure?
You can review the investment options available in your scheme, but a holdings estimate alone does not establish which fund is appropriate for you. Consider your time horizon, risk tolerance, diversification, charges, and the scheme’s rules; seek regulated financial advice if you need a personal recommendation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why might two providers give different AI exposure estimates for similar funds?
They may use different holdings dates, classify companies differently, or disclose different levels of detail. One estimate may include only direct AI businesses while another may include suppliers and infrastructure, so compare definitions and coverage before comparing the percentages.
