Check the game’s official service page before restarting your router or changing network settings. In about three minutes, identify the exact game, platform, region and symptom; read the provider’s incident scope and timestamps; then compare that information with a controlled local test. A title can be online globally while matchmaking in one region, authentication on one platform or voice chat is failing. If the relevant service is operational, escalate from restarting the game to updating software, testing Ethernet, reviewing firewall and background applications, and finally checking your internet provider.
What should I check before changing my home network?
Start by defining the service boundary, then consult a first-party status page. This prevents you from treating a provider outage as a router problem and gives you a timestamp for every later test.
Write down the exact failure
Record these details before troubleshooting:
- Game: the title and, if relevant, its game mode.
- Launcher or platform: such as a PC launcher, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo device or a cloud service.
- Device: console model, Windows PC or another supported system.
- Region: country or matchmaking region selected by the game.
- Symptom: cannot sign in, matchmaking error, disconnect during a match, store failure or voice-chat failure.
- Time: the clock time and your time zone when the error occurred.
“The game is down” is too broad to test. Authentication, matchmaking, inventory, a game server, a launcher, a store and voice services can have separate failure states.

How do I check the official game server status?
Use the publisher’s or platform owner’s own status page first. These pages are the authoritative place to see incidents, planned maintenance and the component or region affected.

- Open the first-party status page. Steam Support’s network-connectivity guidance directs players to the Steam Server Status page before treating a connection problem as local. Activision’s Online Services page offers checks for the selected game and links to Xbox, PlayStation, Battle.net, Nintendo, Steam, Epic Games and Ubisoft+ services. Riot Games, Epic Games, EA, Ubisoft and Rockstar each publish service-status information for their games or platforms.
- Select the exact game and platform. Do not stop at a publisher’s front page if it offers separate entries for PC, console, launcher or network services.
- Set the region when the page allows it. A regional shard can fail while another region remains available.
- Read the incident text and component name. Look for authentication, matchmaking, online play, store, launcher, voice or another function that matches your symptom.
- Record the incident state and timestamps. Note when the incident started, the last update, the affected platform or region and the provider’s estimated maintenance window.

How do I read a server-status page correctly?
Match the status page’s scope to your own setup instead of relying on a single green or red headline. “Operational” usually means no incident is posted for that component; it does not guarantee that every player, route or account can connect.

Some pages show recently closed incidents. Those entries help explain a failure that began during an outage but persists after recovery; they are also useful when contacting support because you can provide the incident’s start and resolution times.
Why can my friends play while I cannot?
Different scope is the most common explanation. Your friends may use another region, platform, account service, network route or game mode, so their successful login does not rule out a partial outage.

Examples of partial availability
- A game’s global login service can be healthy while matchmaking in one region is degraded.
- PC players can connect while a console network is having a sign-in or multiplayer-entitlement incident.
- Online play can work while the store or authentication component is unavailable.
- Your friends can remain in an existing match while new logins or matchmaking requests fail.
- A recovered outage can leave your session token or launcher process stale until you restart it.
What should I do if the official status page is healthy?
Use a repeatable escalation order and change one variable at a time. This preserves evidence and tells you whether the fault is in the game process, device, local network, software configuration or internet provider.
- Retry the game once. Close it fully, relaunch it and reproduce the same action. If the launcher has its own sign-in, close and reopen that too.
- Restart the device. Reboot the console or PC so the game, network stack and authentication session start cleanly.
- Install pending updates. Check the game and launcher for updates, then apply operating-system and network-driver updates offered for your device. An outdated client can be rejected even when servers are online.
- Test a direct wired connection. Connect the device directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, such as a Cat6 cable, and repeat the same test. Steam identifies a direct wired test as a way to isolate wireless or powerline interference; it is not proof that the game servers are healthy.
- Review firewall and security software. Confirm that the game and launcher are allowed through the operating system’s firewall. Temporarily identify, rather than permanently disable, VPNs, traffic filters and background applications that can intercept connections.
- Check for unwanted software. Steam’s guidance includes scanning for spyware, adware and viruses because those programs can consume bandwidth, alter DNS or interfere with a game process. Use your existing security software and follow its remediation instructions.
- Restart the router. Power it off, wait for it to finish shutting down, power it back on and wait until the internet connection is restored before retesting. Record whether this changes the symptom.
- Compare another connection. A mobile hotspot can be an isolation test. If the game works there, your home network or provider path deserves attention; if it fails there too, the game, account, device or platform remains a stronger suspect. A hotspot result does not prove that the game service is healthy.
- Check the internet provider. If no game or platform outage is posted, look for an ISP outage or performance notice and ask the provider to check your line. Epic’s connection guidance recommends this step when its service page shows no outage.
- Contact the device manufacturer or game support. Provide the title, platform, region, error text, incident URL or status screenshot, exact times and the tests that changed or failed to change the result.
Keep a small test log
Write down the status-page state and time, each restart, the connection type, the error message and the outcome. For example: “14:05 UTC, matchmaking marked degraded in my region; 14:40 UTC, status monitoring; 14:45 UTC, launcher restarted, same error.” This prevents a recovered outage from being mistaken for a new local failure.
When should I wait instead of changing settings?
Wait when the provider lists maintenance or an active incident whose scope matches your symptom. Repeatedly changing DNS, opening ports or factory-resetting a router cannot repair a remote outage and can create a second problem.

Safe waiting pattern
- Save the incident start time and latest update.
- Wait until the stated maintenance window has ended, allowing for a follow-up delay if the operator says work is continuing.
- Refresh the incident page at reasonable intervals rather than continuously.
- After a “resolved” update, restart the game or launcher once to discard cached credentials or sessions.
- If the status remains healthy but your symptom continues, resume the local escalation order and preserve your log.
Changes that need a specific reason
Port forwarding, custom DNS, firewall exceptions and router resets are configuration changes, not general outage tests. Make them only when official support gives instructions for your title and device, and record the previous setting so you can undo the change.

Support can act faster when your report separates a service incident from a local reproduction. Include:
- Game title, launcher, device model, operating-system version and game version.
- Country or region and the platform account type, without sharing passwords or authentication codes.
- Exact error text or code, the affected function and whether other modes work.
- Incident state, affected component, start time and last update shown on the official page.
- Your own test times, including restart, update, Ethernet, firewall/background-app review, router and hotspot results.
- Whether another device or network reproduces the failure.
Do not infer that a status page is wrong simply because one session remains broken after recovery. Cached credentials, a stale launcher process, local DNS and a separate platform incident can outlast the provider’s main event.

- Identify game, platform, device, region and symptom.

How often should I refresh a status page during maintenance?
Follow the operator’s update cadence when one is shown; otherwise check every few minutes rather than repeatedly. Excessive refreshing adds no diagnostic value and can make it harder to notice the meaningful change from investigating to monitoring or resolved.
Should I change DNS settings when a game will not connect?
Only after the status pages are healthy and simpler tests point to name-resolution trouble. Capture the original DNS settings first, because changing them will not fix authentication, matchmaking capacity or a platform outage.
What does a mobile-hotspot result actually prove?
It shows that two different access paths produce different results, which helps isolate your home connection or ISP route. It cannot establish that the game service is operational, because the hotspot may use a different region, carrier filtering or a different route to the same failing service.
