An AI-generated math proof is a draft to inspect, not a result established by fluent wording. To check it, first freeze the exact proposition, hypotheses, definitions, domains, and quantifiers. Then audit every inference, expand omitted steps, independently re-derive the load-bearing claims, and test boundary cases for counterexamples. For high-stakes work, add a proof assistant such as Lean, Rocq, or Isabelle and obtain an independent mathematical review. A formal checker can verify only the statement and definitions you encoded; it cannot tell you whether that encoding matches the original problem. Record exactly what was tested, reviewed, or formally checked so readers do not mistake an AI suggestion for a verified theorem.
Why can an AI math proof look correct while being wrong?
Mathematical language models are optimized to produce plausible continuations. They can write polished notation, cite familiar theorems, and move through several algebraic lines while silently changing a condition or using a rule outside its domain. The result may be convincing prose with one invalid inference that breaks the entire argument.
The Leiden Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics, dated 2 June 2026 and endorsed by the International Mathematical Union, warns that automated techniques can produce plausible but unreliable or incorrect arguments that are difficult to distinguish from correct proofs. A House of Commons Library briefing published 19 May 2026 gives the practical rule: treat AI as an assistant, not an authority. Those statements do not supply an error rate; they explain why verification must be explicit.
- A proof may answer a nearby question rather than the question asked.
- An apparently harmless cancellation may divide by zero or discard a valid case.
- A theorem may be invoked without all of its hypotheses.
- A finite set of successful examples may hide a counterexample outside the tested range.
- A formal checker may accept a faithfully encoded proof of the wrong proposition.
The workflow below is designed to catch these failures in a repeatable order.

How do I freeze the exact claim before checking the proof?
Copy the original problem and the AI answer into separate documents, then write the statement you intend to verify in your own notation. Do this before repairing any line, because silently improving the statement can make an invalid answer appear valid.
- Write the conclusion as a complete proposition. Include every quantifier, such as “for every real number” or “there exists an integer,” and specify whether the claim is an equality, implication, equivalence, bound, or existence result.
- List the hypotheses. Record positivity, nonzero conditions, continuity, differentiability, independence, integrality, ordering, and any finiteness or completeness assumptions. If the problem gives a domain, copy it exactly.
- Define every symbol. State whether a variable is real, complex, integer, a vector, a function, or an element of a particular set. Distinguish an index from a value and a parameter from a variable being quantified.
- Check the target against the original wording. An answer proving a one-way implication has not proved an “if and only if.” A result for positive numbers does not settle a claim about all real numbers. A numerical approximation does not establish an exact identity.
- Mark dependencies. Note which definitions, lemmas, previously proved results, or external theorems the proof says it uses. These become checkpoints during the audit.
Pay special attention to changed domains, missing side conditions, swapped quantifiers, and conclusions that are weaker or simply different from the requested one. A proof cannot be correct for the original task if its opening line has already changed the task.
How can I audit every inference in an AI proof?
Read the proof one line at a time. For each equality, implication, inequality, or theorem invocation, write down the rule that justifies it and verify that the current hypotheses satisfy that rule.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check algebraic transformations
- For cancellation, ask whether the cancelled expression is guaranteed to be nonzero.
- For division, record the denominator and prove it cannot vanish on the stated domain.
- For square roots, logarithms, inverse trigonometric functions, and fractional powers, check their real or complex domains and branch conventions.
- For squaring or taking square roots, determine whether the transformation is reversible or only one-way.
- For inequalities, check whether multiplication or division changes the direction because a factor may be negative.
- For limits, derivatives, and integrals, verify the required convergence, continuity, differentiability, measurability, or integrability conditions.
Check logical transitions
- Separate “if” from “only if.” The converse often needs a different argument.
- Track quantifier order. “For every x there exists y” is generally weaker than “there exists y for every x.”
- Confirm that an existence argument actually constructs an object or proves a condition that guarantees one.
- Check whether an induction proof establishes the base case, states the induction hypothesis accurately, and proves the step for the required range.
- When the proof uses contradiction, identify the precise negation of the claim; an informal opposite is easy to get wrong.
Check theorem invocations
Ask the AI to name the theorem, but do not treat the name as evidence. Look up the statement in a reliable reference or your course text and compare every hypothesis. A theorem about compact sets cannot be applied merely because a set is bounded, and a result for finite sums does not automatically extend to infinite series.
Expand omitted steps
Whenever the proof says “clearly,” “similarly,” “by inspection,” or “after simplification,” perform the omitted calculation yourself. Write intermediate expressions, preserve parentheses, and annotate where each assumption enters. Hidden errors frequently occur at these compression points because a sign, index, or exceptional case disappears between two displayed lines.
What hidden errors occur most often in algebra and calculus?
Most failures are ordinary mathematical mistakes presented with unusual confidence. The following patterns provide a focused search list.
Illegal division or cancellation
Suppose an argument starts with x2 = x, cancels x, and concludes x = 1. The cancellation assumes x ≠ 0 and loses the valid solution x = 0. A correct proof must split into the cases x = 0 and x ≠ 0, or avoid the division.

Extraneous solutions from reversible-looking operations
Squaring both sides preserves equality only in one direction when signs are unrestricted. Solving a squared equation can introduce candidates that fail in the original equation, so every candidate must be substituted back.
Domain drift
An expression such as ln(x) requires x > 0 over the reals. A proof that differentiates or simplifies it while allowing nonpositive values has changed the problem. The same issue appears when a real argument quietly becomes complex or when a function is treated as defined at an endpoint where it is not.
Index and boundary mistakes
In a sum, recurrence, or induction, verify the first and last indices. An expression valid for n ≥ 1 may fail at n = 0; an index shift can omit a term or count one twice.
Misused limits and infinite processes
Term-by-term differentiation, integration, or limit exchange requires conditions. A finite calculation does not justify an infinite interchange. Check the convergence mode and the theorem that permits the operation.
Confusing necessary and sufficient conditions
If a property implies an equation, the equation is necessary for the property; it need not be sufficient. Test the reverse direction separately instead of assuming symmetry.
How should I independently re-derive the load-bearing parts?
Do not retype the AI proof and call that an independent check. Choose the few transitions on which the conclusion depends and derive them from definitions or a different method.
Locate the load-bearing claims
Mark the first nontrivial lemma, every case split, the step that introduces a bound or equality used later, and the final transition to the requested conclusion. If one of these fails, later algebra cannot rescue the proof.

Use a different representation
- For an algebraic identity, expand both sides independently or compare coefficients.
- For a geometric claim, translate it into coordinates, vectors, or a known invariant.
- For a recurrence, compute initial terms and prove the relation directly before using a closed form.
- For a probability result, define the sample space and events explicitly, then derive the expression from conditional probability or counting.
- For an optimization argument, check feasibility, boundary points, and whether the claimed stationary point is a maximum, minimum, or neither.
Separate discovery from verification
A second AI response can suggest a route or identify a suspicious line, but it is not independent mathematical certification. Independence means that the checker has access to the original statement and can explain the justification without merely reproducing the same generated chain.

How do examples and boundary cases expose a false proof?
Examples are excellent for finding counterexamples and poor at proving a universal claim. Use them as probes after the statement and domains are frozen.
Choose informative tests
- Test zero, one, and negative values when they belong to the domain.
- Use values at denominators’ zeros, interval endpoints, and points where a function changes sign.
- Try the smallest permitted integer and the first few induction cases.
- Use symmetric, degenerate, or equal-parameter cases that simplify the expression.
- For numerical claims, test values with very different scales and values near rounding or overflow boundaries.
If one permitted example contradicts a universal statement, the statement is false. If ten, a hundred, or a million examples pass, you have evidence only about those cases; you have not proved the general theorem. Record the exact inputs, arithmetic precision, and code or calculator settings used, because a numerical test can itself contain rounding or transcription errors.
When should I use a proof assistant?
Use formal checking when the claim matters enough to justify translating it into a formal language, when the argument is long or repetitive, or when a small kernel-checked certificate is valuable. Lean, Rocq, and Isabelle can check proof objects against formally defined propositions and rules, but the translation is part of the work rather than a clerical step.
Prepare the formal statement
- Define the relevant number systems, structures, functions, and predicates.
- State assumptions explicitly instead of relying on prose such as “obviously nonzero.”
- Encode the exact conclusion, including quantifier order and equality direction.
- Identify imported libraries, axioms, automation tactics, and version information.
- Run the checker and preserve the source file and environment needed to reproduce the result.
Inspect what acceptance means
Acceptance shows that the assistant found a proof of the encoded proposition within its logic and imported environment. It does not show that the encoding matches the original question, that a definition has the intended real-world meaning, or that an omitted assumption was not accidentally built into the formal statement. The Leiden Declaration identifies this translation between computer-encoded and human presentations as a central verification challenge.
| Method | Assurance sought | Main cost or risk | What still needs inspection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary human review | Whether the argument answers the intended problem and each inference is valid | Time, expertise, and susceptibility to overlooked steps | Definitions, domains, hypotheses, theorem conditions, and hidden cases |
| Formal checking | Whether a formal proof object follows from an encoded proposition in a specified system | Translating the mathematics and maintaining dependencies and versions | Correspondence between the encoding and the original claim, plus imported axioms and definitions |
| Both methods | Human relevance review plus machine-checked derivation | Highest setup and review effort | Every translation, assumption, dependency, and reported verification level |
Can I trust a proof if Lean accepts it?
No. Lean acceptance is strong evidence about the formal object that Lean checked, but it is not a blanket certificate for an informal statement. A typo in the theorem, an overly strong assumption, an unintended definition, or an imported axiom can make the formal result irrelevant to the original question.
Compare the natural-language problem and the formal declaration line by line. Check types, coercions between number systems, hidden typeclass assumptions, universe levels where relevant, and the exact libraries imported. Then ask a mathematician who understands both versions to explain how each informal condition appears in the formal statement. Only after that comparison should you report the claim as formally checked, and you should name the system, version, dependencies, and proposition that were actually checked.

How should an independent reviewer examine an AI proof?
For consequential claims, ask a knowledgeable reviewer to start from the frozen statement rather than from the AI’s confidence or presentation. The reviewer should be able to point to where each assumption enters and explain why the final sentence answers the requested question.
- Give the reviewer the original problem, the unedited AI response, and your list of definitions and assumptions.
- Ask for a line-by-line justification of nontrivial transitions, not merely a corrected final proof.
- Request explicit treatment of exceptional cases, boundary values, and converse implications.
- For a formal result, provide the source, tool version, imported libraries, axioms, and build instructions.
- Record disagreements and the resolution, rather than deleting the uncertain draft.
Human oversight is especially important when the result informs safety, finance, medical decisions, legal reasoning, published mathematics, or software that depends on a theorem. The House of Commons Library’s guidance on AI verification emphasizes reputable sources and expert review for factual claims; mathematical claims deserve the same discipline.

Use precise labels instead of a single word such as “proved.” A transparent report distinguishes the source of each part of the work.
- AI suggested: the system produced the argument or an idea; no independent validation is implied.
- Examples tested: named inputs or cases were evaluated; this does not establish a universal result.
- Human-reviewed: a qualified person checked the statement and reasoning, with the scope of that review stated.
- Formally checked: a specified proof assistant accepted a specified formal proposition in a specified environment.
- Reproduced: another person independently followed the documented steps and obtained the same result.
Include the date, software and version, numerical precision where applicable, assumptions, and unresolved limitations. If the reviewer checked only a lemma, say so; do not generalize that result to the entire theorem. The 20 February 2026 account of a research-level proof effort by a major AI provider describes expert feedback and human selection, which illustrates why generated attempts should not be equated with established correctness.
What should I do when I find a suspicious line?
Stop at the first unsupported transition and isolate it. Do not patch later lines until you know whether the claim can be repaired without changing the theorem.
- Copy the exact preceding and following expressions.
- State the rule the line appears to use.
- List the missing condition, such as a nonzero denominator or convergence assumption.
- Construct a counterexample to the line if possible.
- Split into cases or replace the step with a theorem whose hypotheses you can prove.
- Recheck the final conclusion against the original proposition after the repair.
If no repair preserves the original assumptions and conclusion, report the proof as invalid and explain the earliest failing step. A clear failure diagnosis is more useful than a cosmetically edited proof that still contains an undisclosed gap.

- Have I copied the exact original claim?
- Are all variables, sets, functions, domains, and quantifiers defined?
- Did the AI silently strengthen, weaken, or change any assumption?
- Can I justify every equality, implication, inequality, and theorem invocation?
- Did I check division, cancellation, roots, logarithms, signs, and reversibility?
- Did I expand every skipped algebraic or logical step?
- Did I independently re-derive the load-bearing lemmas?
- Did I test zero, endpoints, smallest cases, negative values, and other relevant boundaries?
- Did I substitute candidates back into the original equation after transformations?
- If I used a proof assistant, does its formal statement match the informal one exactly?
- Did I inspect imports, axioms, definitions, versions, and dependencies?
- Has an appropriately qualified person reviewed the result when the stakes justify it?
- Have I reported whether the result was AI-suggested, example-tested, human-reviewed, formally checked, or reproduced?
A proof that survives this process has a documented level of support. It is still important to state that level narrowly: verification of one proposition, under one set of assumptions, is not a guarantee about nearby claims or future revisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if the AI changes the theorem while solving it?
Treat the response as addressing a different problem and return to the original statement. Compare domains, quantifier order, and conclusion wording line by line, then ask for a fresh proof that preserves the original assumptions explicitly.
Is checking many numerical examples enough for a proof?
No. Examples can expose a counterexample, but successful finite testing cannot establish a universal theorem. Use examples to target boundaries and likely failure points, then verify the general inference symbolically or formally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow can I tell whether a theorem citation in an AI proof is being used legally?
Find the theorem’s precise statement in a dependable mathematical reference and map each hypothesis to a fact already proved in the argument. If even one required condition is missing, the citation does not justify the step.
What information should accompany a formally checked result?
Report the proof assistant and version, the exact formal proposition, imported libraries, axioms or admitted results, and the source needed to reproduce the build. Also explain how the formal statement corresponds to the original informal problem.
When is a second AI opinion useful?
A second system can help locate suspicious algebra, suggest alternative derivations, or generate test cases. It should be treated as another source of hypotheses, not as independent certification, unless a qualified human or a formal checker validates the resulting claim.
