The most reliable way to assess a vintage game cartridge is to compare the exact title and regional release across its label, shell, fasteners and, when practical, circuit board. No single stamp, seal, successful boot or electronic-reader result proves that the whole cartridge is original. Treat an item as unverified when key evidence is missing; a convincing exterior can hide a different board, and an electronic check does not authenticate the shell.
What should I check first?
Start by identifying the platform, exact game and region. Then find documented examples of that same release to compare against. A cartridge that looks different from a familiar copy may be a legitimate regional or title-specific variation, while a cartridge that looks plausible in a generic reference photo may still be wrong for its release.
- Identify the cartridge. Record the platform, title and visible regional or language details. Nintendo advises buyers to confirm that the region and language match what they intend to purchase.
- Find a release-specific reference. Look for clear photographs or documentation of authentic examples of the same title and region. SNES Central’s original PCB archive is one reference for SNES board identifiers and images. Its catalog includes multiple commercial, third-party and prototype board families; there is no universal board identifier that applies to every cartridge.
- Photograph the actual item. Take clear front and back pictures in good light. If the seller permits opening and the process is appropriate for the cartridge, add clear pictures of the board.
- Compare multiple features. Check printing, label placement, shell molding, fasteners and—when visible—the PCB and components. A single matching detail is not enough to verify the whole item.
Do not assume every cartridge follows a standard silhouette. Nintendo’s historical training material shows exceptions such as Game Boy Advance motion-sensor cartridges and Game Boy Color rumble cartridges. Compare unusual shapes with examples for the specific game rather than rejecting them because they differ from a common shell.
Make a simple evidence record as you work. Note which details are visible, which are hidden, and which reference images you used. Separating observations (“the back screw is different”) from conclusions (“the cartridge is fake”) prevents a vivid but weak clue from dominating the assessment. If the title, territory or revision cannot be identified, the honest result is limited or unverified rather than a forced yes-or-no answer.

Which exterior details are useful clues?
Exterior inspection can reveal inconsistencies, but it produces warning signs rather than a verdict. Nintendo cites blurred or discolored labels, missing or poor-quality seals, and errors on boards as concerns; Epilogue’s physical-inspection guidance also points to incorrect colors, text and housing details.
- Label and printing: Compare artwork, fine print, product details, region information, colors and alignment with a documented copy. Look for misspellings, fuzzy printing or details that do not belong to the release. Check small legal lines and rating or language markings, not just the main illustration.
- Branding and seal: Check that branding and any seal appear consistent with examples for that game and region. A seal that looks wrong or is absent can be a red flag, but neither a seal nor a plausible logo proves the cartridge is authentic.
- Shell and back molding: Compare the housing details, molded text and overall shape. A shell can be replaced, and some legitimate games use less-common housings. Look for molding seams and recesses that correspond to the documented version rather than assuming every shell from a platform is interchangeable.
- Fasteners: Compare the screw type with a documented example. An inconsistency is worth investigating, but it cannot identify the board hidden inside. A worn or replaced screw may reflect servicing rather than a counterfeit board.
- Asking price and seller presentation: An unusually low asking price can be a warning sign, not proof. Give more weight to whether the seller provides clear images of the actual item and whether the item can be returned if materially misrepresented.
Use consistent lighting when photographing details. Glare can make genuine ink appear washed out, while a dark image can hide a poor-quality reproduction. Capture the whole front and back first, then close-ups of text, seals, screw heads and molding. Do not rely on a cropped stock image supplied for another listing.
These details are most useful as a set. A neat label does not establish that the shell or board is original, and an imperfect label does not by itself establish that the electronics are counterfeit. A replacement label, swapped shell or mixed assembly can make exterior clues disagree with one another.

Why isn’t a stamped number enough?
A number impressed on a cartridge is a comparison detail, not a universal authentication shortcut. Game Verifying’s photo-submission rules for Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64 and Super Nintendo submissions specifically reject pictures focused entirely on number stamps; the project asks for clear front and back photos instead.
Compare a stamp only with examples of the same release, and do not let it outweigh conflicting evidence from the label, shell or board. A stamp that looks familiar cannot show whether the board is correct, while a missing or different stamp is not conclusive without release-specific context. The useful question is whether the cartridge’s overall details match documented examples—not whether one number looks convincing.

How can I inspect the circuit board?
When access is appropriate, the board and its components offer the strongest practical physical comparison. Match the board identifier, chip arrangement and game-specific components to documented originals for the same title and region; do not rely on a plausible-looking trademark alone.
- Decide whether opening is appropriate. If opening could damage the cartridge, affect a return or is not permitted, ask the seller for board photographs or leave the result limited to an exterior inspection. Opening a collectible before confirming the seller’s policy can remove an easy return option.
- Use a properly fitting tool. Epilogue specifies a 3.8 mm security bit for Game Boy, Game Boy Color and SNES games, and a tri-wing driver for Game Boy Advance. Nintendo Life’s illustrated GBA inspection also shows a tri-wing board comparison. Tool compatibility is not an authenticity test. The relevant shopping searches are “3.8mm gamebit tri-wing retro game cartridge screwdriver set,” “3.8mm gamebit security screwdriver” and “Game Boy Advance tri-wing screwdriver”; verify the listing’s fit rather than assuming a generic kit works.
- Keep parts together. Retain the screws and avoid forcing a fastener that does not fit the tool. If access is uncertain, stop rather than risk damaging the housing. Photograph screw positions before removal so reassembly does not introduce a new problem.
- Compare the board with a title-specific reference. Examine both sides where useful. Check the board identifier and arrangement of chips and other game-specific components against documented examples. Note unusual memory, audio, battery or enhancement components that the particular game is known to use.
- Interpret unusual components in context. Nintendo’s historical anti-piracy material identifies missing or misspelled board trademarks and epoxy over a counterfeit semiconductor chip as warning signs. These are contextual clues, not a rule that every black epoxy spot on every vintage platform means a cartridge is counterfeit.
SNES Central’s archive recorded 1,943 documented PCBs as of August 17, 2019, and separately listed 179 standard PCB types. The first figure is a dated count of documented boards, not a 2026 total or a count of distinct board types. The archive’s breadth is one reason not to invent a one-board-fits-all rule such as requiring every SNES cartridge to use a board marked “SHVC.”

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Board evidence also has limits. A genuine board may have been moved into a replacement shell, or a counterfeit board may be installed in an authentic-looking housing. A board that matches the title strengthens the case for the electronics, but you should still describe the shell, label and board separately when they have not all been inspected.
What can an electronic cartridge reader tell me?
Some readers add an electronic cross-check by comparing game data and hardware with known releases, but their result does not certify the entire physical cartridge. Epilogue says its GB Operator and SN Operator, when used with Playback or Retrace, compare hardware and game data against known releases; the company also says the check looks at electronics, not the shell.
| Reader result | What Epilogue says it means | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Official | A match to the reader’s database without its typical counterfeit markers. | It does not prove the shell or label is original, and it is not an independent accuracy guarantee. |
| Unofficial | The cartridge may be a reproduction, homebrew game or flashcart. | The label alone does not identify which of those possibilities applies. |
| Unrecognized | The cartridge may be counterfeit, may be a regional release not represented in the database, or may have dirty contacts. | It is not, by itself, a definitive counterfeit finding. |
These are vendor-reported capabilities and result definitions, not independently validated laboratory results. Epilogue acknowledges that sophisticated reproductions can pass its checks. Reader coverage also depends on the database, so a result should be weighed alongside the physical evidence rather than treated as a certificate.

Dirty contacts can affect a reading. If a cartridge receives an unexpected result, document the condition and, where safe and appropriate, have the contacts inspected or cleaned according to the device maker’s directions before treating the result as meaningful. A second reading does not solve a database gap, and a clean reading still says nothing about whether the outer shell was swapped.
Reader support differs by system. Epilogue documents a GB Operator for Game Boy-family cartridges and an SN Operator for SNES cartridges; consult the maker’s product documentation for the supported systems and software requirements for the particular device. A shell-opening tool enables inspection but does not screen game data or decide authenticity.
How should I assess two candidate copies?
Compare each cartridge against the same release-specific reference and assess how much evidence is available. A candidate with clear actual-item images and a board that matches a documented example is better supported than one backed only by a stamp or a successful boot, but no single comparison detail should be presented as absolute proof.
| Comparison point | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Release identity | Exact title, platform, region and language. | A legitimate regional variant may differ from a familiar copy. |
| Actual-item evidence | Whether the pictures show the item for sale, with clear front and back views. | Stock or generic images cannot establish the condition or details of the specific cartridge. |
| Exterior | Printing, label placement, branding, shell molding and fasteners. | Inconsistencies can flag a mixed or suspicious assembly for closer review. |
| Board | Board family, identifier and game-specific component layout, when visible. | A shell can conceal a different board, so internal evidence can strengthen a physical comparison. |
| Reader evidence | Supported system, database result and condition of the contacts. | A database-dependent electronic result is useful corroboration but not a whole-object certificate. |
| Remaining uncertainty | Which features are unverified, unavailable or inconsistent. | A clear uncertainty statement is more accurate than a binary verdict based on incomplete evidence. |
When an electronic reader is available, treat it as an additional comparison point, not as a replacement for the release and shell checks. An opening kit likewise helps you see the board but does not authenticate it; the value comes from comparing what is inside with documentation for that release.
What should I ask a remote seller?
Request photos of the actual cartridge, not just a generic product image. Ask for clear front and back views and, if the seller can provide them safely, board photographs; also review the seller’s history and the return terms before buying.

- Ask the seller to identify the platform, title and region shown in the listing.
- Request images that make the label, back molding and fasteners visible.
- Ask for board photos when the item’s value or the listing’s claims make that evidence important.
- Ask whether any shell, label or board has been replaced or repaired.
- Check whether the return policy allows a return if the item differs materially from its description.
If the seller refuses reasonable actual-item photos, treats a stamp as the only proof or will not explain return conditions, reduce your confidence and consider another listing. No tool can recover evidence that was never supplied. After delivery, preserve the listing and the seller’s photos before raising a misrepresentation concern; a dispute may be appropriate depending on the transaction and platform.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What common clues are easy to overread?
Many popular “quick checks” are too broad to support a confident verdict across different games and systems. Treat them as questions to investigate, not universal tests.
- “It plays, so it is authentic.” Successful play does not establish that the shell, label and board are all original.
- “The stamp matches, so it is authentic.” A stamp is one detail, and Game Verifying explicitly asks for broader photos in the systems covered by its submission rules.
- “The seal or logo looks right.” Exterior details can be replaced or combined with a different board.
- “This one feature always proves a fake.” Do not make a cross-platform rule from a square-logo detail, brown board edge, weight, battery or epoxy spot without a documented, release-specific basis.
- “The reader says Unrecognized, so it is fake.” Epilogue says missing database coverage and dirty contacts can also produce that result.
- “The historical price is the current market price.” Nintendo’s anti-piracy training material is historical; its then-current prices should not be treated as present-day values.
- “A named tool guarantees authenticity.” A 3.8 mm bit or tri-wing driver only gives access to the housing. The comparison of the exposed board is what supplies useful evidence.
No population-wide counterfeit rate, cross-platform authentication accuracy or resale premium is established here. Avoid turning an individual clue or a vendor’s reader result into a numerical claim about the market. If essential evidence remains unavailable, label the item unverified and preserve your notes so a specialist can review the same observations later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a reproduction cartridge still be a legitimate purchase?
That depends on what the seller claims and what the buyer wants; the cartridge alone cannot reveal the seller’s intent. Ask for an accurate description and clear item-specific photos, and make sure the return terms match the listing’s claims.

What should I do if two sources disagree about a board?
Prefer references that identify the exact title and regional release, and look for more than one documented example before treating a difference as suspicious. If the discrepancy remains unresolved, record it as uncertainty rather than forcing an authentic-or-counterfeit verdict.
Should I open a cartridge before buying it?
Only when the seller permits it, the tool fits correctly and the value of the evidence justifies the risk. Otherwise request clear board photographs or rely on a limited exterior assessment with appropriate return protection.
What does an Unrecognized reader result mean?
It can indicate a counterfeit, an unrepresented regional release or dirty contacts. Because the result is database-dependent, it is a warning to investigate, not a standalone counterfeit finding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre unusual cartridge shapes automatically fake?
No. Nintendo’s historical examples include legitimate Game Boy Advance motion-sensor and Game Boy Color rumble cartridges with nonstandard housings. Compare the shape with documented examples of that specific game.
What if the cartridge plays but the seller has no board photos?
Successful play confirms only that the game operates in that moment. Keep the result limited to what you observed, request the missing evidence or use the return terms rather than calling the cartridge verified.
The Bottom Line
Match the exact title, region and release across the actual label, shell, fasteners and—when feasible—the PCB. Use a reader only as electronic corroboration, never as proof of the shell. When important evidence is missing or contradictory, the accurate conclusion is unverified.
