Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To charge a Pixel past an 80% cap, open Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization and turn off Limit to 80% (or turn off Use charging optimization, if that is the control shown). Keep the phone connected until it reaches 100%. Google documents the 80% limit for Pixel 6a and later; labels and menu availability can vary by device and software version.
Turn off the 80% charging limit
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization.
- Turn off Limit to 80%. If your phone instead shows Use charging optimization, switch that off to allow a full charge.
- Leave the phone connected until it reaches 100%.
Google says turning off the 80% option allows the phone to charge to 100%. The setting is documented for Pixel 6a and later. If you cannot find it, confirm your phone model and software version before looking for another workaround. Google’s charging optimization instructions provide the current guidance.
If the phone says “Protecting your battery”
This is a temporary protection state, not the manually selected 80% limit. Google says the phone may restrict charging to about 70%–80% after conditions such as charging for hours at high temperatures or being continuously connected for several days.
- Open Settings > Battery and tap Charge to full, if that option appears.
- Alternatively, restart the phone to override the restriction.
This override may not be permanent: the protection feature can turn on again if its triggering conditions recur. See Google’s explanation of battery protection for details.

Adaptive Charging is different from an 80% cap
Adaptive Charging can still bring the battery to 100%; it delays completion until near the time you usually unplug the phone. Google says it takes about 14 days to learn your charging habits, and an inconsistent routine or travel may prevent it from activating.
If you want a full charge by a particular time, Adaptive Charging may suit a predictable schedule. If you need the phone to begin charging beyond 80% now, turn off the 80% limit instead.

Why Google recommends occasional full charges
Google says a full charge is needed every 10th charging cycle for accurate battery-capacity readings, even when the 80% limit is enabled. After 100% appears, Google advises leaving the phone plugged in for at least 30 minutes. These instructions are in Maximize charging on your Pixel phone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A faster charger will not remove the cap
A compatible USB-C cable and power adapter can affect charging speed, and a wall outlet may charge faster than some sources, such as a laptop. The right charger depends on your Pixel model; Google names its 45W USB-C Power Charger as one compatible example. But a faster charger does not override the 80% setting—the Settings change is what allows charging to 100%. For general guidance, see Google’s Pixel battery advice.
