On PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Profile > Online ID, enter an available ID, then follow the prompts to confirm. Sony calls this your online ID; it is the display name on your PlayStation profile, not the email address you use to sign in.
Change your online ID on PS4
- From the PS4 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Account Management > Account Information > Profile > Online ID.
- Enter the new online ID. If it is available, select Continue.
- Choose whether to show your previous online ID next to the new one on your profile for 30 days. This is optional and must be selected during the change.
- Follow the remaining prompts to confirm. Sony says you will be signed out of all devices after the change.
Sony also documents a web option: sign in to account management, open Profile, select Edit beside the current online ID, enter an available ID, and continue through the prompts. Both methods use the same change process and compatibility cautions. PlayStation Support’s online ID instructions.
Does changing your PSN name cost anything?
Sony says the first online ID change is free; additional changes incur a charge. Its current US instructions do not state the amount, so check the price shown for your region before confirming a later change.
What to check before changing your ID
Check Sony’s game compatibility list
Review Sony’s list of games tested with online ID changes. Games not on the list have not been tested and could have issues. Sony identifies possible problems including inaccessible previously acquired content, lost progress or trophy progress, broken functions, unlinked accounts, reset settings, and an old ID continuing to appear in some places.

Pay particular attention to games Sony categorizes as having critical issues: possible effects include losing in-game currency, progress, user-generated content, or functionality. Sony advises players who want to keep those entitlements and achievements not to change their ID for a listed game with critical issues.
Do not treat the 2018 date as a guarantee
Sony says PS4 games first published on or after April 1, 2018 were developed to support online ID changes. It does not guarantee full compatibility, so the date alone does not ensure a game will work without problems.

What to do if a game has problems afterward
Sony recommends checking your games immediately after changing the ID for disruption or data loss. You can revert to your original online ID for free; Sony says this should resolve most issues, but warns that reverting may not recover some or any lost content, progress, or functionality. Contact PlayStation Support if your ID was changed without authorization or if the new ID still is not showing after more than one week.

Can a child account change its online ID?
No. Sony says a child account cannot change its online ID. It directs eligible child members to account-upgrade guidance, but eligibility depends on the account.
