Excel has no dedicated Change Case button like Word, but you can convert text without formulas using Power Query. Choose Add Column > Format to create a converted copy while retaining the source, or try Flash Fill for a quick pattern-based conversion and inspect its results.
Which method should you use?

Change case with Power Query
Power Query offers lowercase, UPPERCASE, and Capitalize Each Word formatting commands. The Add Column route keeps the original data beside the converted result; use Transform only when you intend to change the selected column itself.
- Open the data in Power Query Editor. If your data is already a query, open that query for editing. Otherwise, select the relevant table or range and use the workflow that opens it in Power Query for your Excel version and platform.
- Select the text column you want to convert.
- Choose Add Column > Format, then select lowercase, UPPERCASE, or Capitalize Each Word.
- Review the new column. Check names, acronyms, and specialized terms before using the output.
- Load the result back into Excel using your intended query load workflow.
Microsoft documents these formatting commands for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, and Excel 2021. Exact Power Query UI and load options can vary by platform and workflow; if the command is missing, check the guidance for your Excel version. Try Flash Fill for a quick conversion
Flash Fill detects and extends patterns in neighboring data. Microsoft’s documented example combines names; it does not promise universal case conversion. You can test it by entering the desired capitalization for an example in a neighboring column, then asking Excel to fill the pattern.

- In a blank column beside your source, type one example in the capitalization you want.
- Start the next example if needed, then choose Data > Flash Fill, or press Ctrl+E where supported.
- Inspect the preview and check all generated results against the source before relying on them.
If Flash Fill does not run, check its automatic setting in Excel Options on Windows or launch it from the Data tab. Microsoft lists Flash Fill for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2024 for Mac, Excel 2021, Excel 2019, and Excel 2016. Choose a capitalization style carefully
- UPPERCASE converts letters to capitals; use it when the text should be entirely uppercase.
- lowercase converts letters to lowercase.
- Capitalize Each Word capitalizes words, but may not match the preferred styling of every name, acronym, brand, or technical term.
Review transformed text before replacing source data. Word capitalization is a mechanical formatting choice, not a universal style editor.

If formulas are acceptable, use an explicit conversion
Microsoft’s documented alternative is to calculate the desired case in a temporary column, then paste the results as values over the original if you want to replace it.
- In a temporary column, enter
=UPPER(A2),=LOWER(A2), or=PROPER(A2), replacingA2with the cell containing the text. - Fill the formula down for the remaining rows.
- Review the converted results, then copy them.
- Select the original cells and use Paste Values to replace formulas with static text.
PROPER capitalizes the first letter in a string and letters after characters other than letters, while converting other letters to lowercase. That behavior can alter acronyms, internal capitals, and some names, so proofread before overwriting data. Refer to Microsoft’s PROPER function reference and case-conversion instructions.
