For clearer dark scenes and more useful headphone cues on PS5, start with the console’s headphone output and 3D-audio settings, then calibrate HDR on your display and use the brightness or gamma pattern in each game. There is no universal brightness number or audio mode that works best for every TV, game, and listener, so compare settings in a familiar scene rather than copying someone else’s values.
The workflow below keeps the changes focused: establish a comfortable headphone level, try personalized 3D audio and Audio Focus, calibrate HDR, and then make the final visibility adjustment in the game itself.
Which PS5 settings should I change first?
Set up headphone output before adjusting sound-enhancement features, and calibrate the display before changing a game’s brightness. That gives you a stable starting point: a known output device and volume for audio, and a display-calibrated HDR signal for visuals.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Set headphone output: go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Select the connected headset under Output Device. Leave Switch Output Device Automatically on if you regularly connect that headset, set Output to Headphones, and choose a comfortable headphone volume.
- Choose a 3D-audio profile: go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) > Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile and follow the listening prompts. Alternatively, select one of Sony’s five presets. Turn on Enable 3D Audio for Headphones, then compare the result with stereo in a familiar game.
- Try Audio Focus: with headphones connected, open Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus, turn on Use Audio Focus, and test an option at Weak strength. Recheck volume after turning it on.
- Calibrate HDR: open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR and follow all three on-screen screens.
- Set visibility in the game: use the game’s brightness or gamma pattern and follow its guidance rather than applying a single number across different titles.
Test one change at a time. If several audio and display settings change together, it becomes harder to tell which adjustment helped—or made a cue less clear.

How do I make dark horror games easier to see on PS5?
Calibrate HDR using the PS5’s on-screen process, then use the individual game’s brightness or gamma pattern. The right result depends on the TV or display and the game; the available guidance does not establish a universal brightness value for all setups.
Calibrate HDR on the PS5
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR. Follow the instructions on each of the three calibration screens, making the on-screen adjustments rather than guessing a value from another display. HDR quality depends on the display and the rest of the home-entertainment setup, so a value that looks right on one system is not a reliable target for another.
Choose how the console handles HDR games and apps
In the PS5 video-output settings, On When Supported keeps games and apps that do not support HDR in SDR. Always On converts even non-HDR-compatible games and apps to HDR output. If your library includes both HDR and SDR titles, On When Supported avoids forcing that conversion; Always On is an available alternative, not a universal quality improvement.

Finish brightness or gamma adjustments in the game
Open the horror game’s own display or graphics menu and use its calibration pattern, if provided. A console-level HDR adjustment does not replace that game-specific step: the title’s own control is where you can judge whether its dark details are visible on your display without relying on a numeric setting borrowed from a different game.
If the image still looks too dark, first check that the game is using the expected HDR mode and review the PS5 calibration screens. Avoid changing multiple console video options at once; doing so makes it difficult to isolate whether the change came from HDR handling, the game, or a display setting.
What PS5 audio settings help me hear footsteps?
Start with headphone output, compare personalized 3D audio with stereo, and test Audio Focus at Weak before increasing its strength. Audio Focus offers sound emphasis options that may help bring particular cues forward, but it can also make headphone output loud.

Set the headset as the output device
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the connected headset as Output Device. Set Output to Headphones and adjust headphone volume to a comfortable level. If you often connect the headset, leaving Switch Output Device Automatically on allows the console to switch output when it is connected.
This is the basic routing step: check it before troubleshooting a quiet or unexpected headphone mix. The same Audio Output settings family also includes Mono Audio for Headphones and Audio Format (Priority), but there is no single format or mono setting established here as best for every game or headset.
Compare personalized 3D audio with stereo
For a tailored setup, go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) > Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile and follow the listening prompts. If you prefer a quicker starting point, choose one of Sony’s five presets. Make sure Enable 3D Audio for Headphones is on, then compare the profile against stereo using the same game and a familiar scene.
3D audio is intended to create an immersive surround-sound effect, but the official feature description does not establish that it improves positional clarity for every listener. Keep the mode that makes cues easiest for you to interpret; a feature being available is not a reason to leave it enabled if stereo is clearer to you.
Use Audio Focus selectively
Connect headphones, then go to Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus and turn on Use Audio Focus. Available choices include Boost Quiet Sounds, Boost High Pitch, voice emphasis, and low-pitched sound emphasis. For footsteps or metallic noises, try Boost High Pitch; for low-level ambience, try Boost Quiet Sounds.
Start at Weak. If that does not make the target cue easier to notice, test Medium and compare again. Sony warns that Audio Focus can make headphone output loud, so check your volume as soon as the feature is enabled and after changing its strength. Audio Focus is an emphasis tool, not a guarantee that every quiet sound will become clearer.

| Personalized 3D audio or one of five presets | Enable 3D Audio for Headphones and compare in the same scene. | Whether the immersive presentation is clearer than stereo in your setup. |
| Audio Focus at Weak | Try Boost Quiet Sounds for faint ambience or Boost High Pitch for footsteps and metallic noises. | Output can become loud; recheck volume. |
| Audio Focus at Medium | Try only if Weak does not make the cue easier to notice. | Recheck comfort and clarity after changing strength. |
Should I change PS5 resolution, VRR, or 120 Hz settings for a horror game?
Leave Resolution on Automatic initially, and keep VRR, 120 Hz Output, ALLM, RGB Range, and Video Transfer Rate at display-appropriate defaults unless you are troubleshooting or a particular game-and-display combination calls for a change. Sony says Automatic selects the highest resolution supported by the connected TV.
These options are not general-purpose visibility controls. If a dark scene is hard to see, first address HDR calibration and the game’s brightness or gamma pattern. Change other video-output options only when you have a specific compatibility or troubleshooting reason; a different resolution or refresh-rate setting is not established as a universal fix for dark scenes.
Should I use Performance Mode or Resolution Mode?
These are PS5 Game Preset preferences, not universal horror-game picture-quality recommendations. You can set a preferred mode in the console’s game presets, but some games do not apply every preset setting and may need to be configured in their own menus.

PS5 Game Presets can also preselect camera view, subtitles or audio, and language. Treat them as defaults for games that support them, then check the individual title’s settings when the result does not match what you want. A game’s own menu takes precedence when you need to adjust a setting that its implementation handles separately.
What headset works well with PS5 horror games?
There is no documented universal winner for every listener. Compare a headset by positional clarity, comfort, connection method, microphone needs, and whether you want independent game/chat balance; then test it with the PS5 audio settings you plan to use.
The Sony PULSE 3D wireless headset is one documented option for PS5 users who want game/chat balancing controls: its instruction manual describes CHAT/GAME balancing, and says users can listen to game audio and chat audio simultaneously. It is optional—the free console settings above are the place to begin, and headset preference still depends on fit and listening needs.

Use a practical headset checklist
- Positional clarity: compare the same game scene in stereo and with headphone 3D audio enabled.
- Comfort: judge fit during a session of the length you normally play; a feature list cannot establish comfort for your head or ears.
- Connection method: confirm that the headset connects in a way that suits your setup. The available product information here does not establish a universal best connection method.
- Microphone needs: decide whether you need voice chat or primarily listen to game audio.
- Game/chat balance: if you want separate balancing controls, check the headset’s documentation. PULSE 3D is documented as having CHAT/GAME balancing.
How can I tell whether a setting helped?
Use a repeatable comparison rather than changing settings by impression across different scenes. Pick a familiar section with a sound cue or dark detail you want to judge, hold the game and display constant, and change one setting at a time.
Recommended Free Tools
- For 3D audio, listen to the same scene with the feature enabled and with stereo.
- For Audio Focus, compare off with Weak first; if needed, compare Weak with Medium while checking volume.
- For HDR, complete all three PS5 calibration screens, then use the game’s own brightness or gamma pattern.
- For headset or chat balance, keep the game scene fixed while adjusting the controls documented for the headset.
Write down the setting you prefer if you are comparing several options. This is especially useful when a game has separate audio and display menus: it helps you distinguish a console-level change from a game-level one without treating a single scene as proof that one mode is best everywhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PS5 send headphone audio in mono?
Yes. Mono Audio for Headphones is available in the Settings > Sound > Audio Output settings family. The available guidance does not identify it as the preferred choice for horror games, so treat it as an accessibility or listening-preference option rather than a positional-audio enhancement.
Why does my headset switch output when I connect it?
The Audio Output menu includes Switch Output Device Automatically. If you do not want the PS5 to switch outputs when a headset is connected, review that toggle in Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
Can PS5 Game Presets set subtitles or language automatically?
Game Presets can preselect preferences including subtitles or audio and language, as well as camera view and a preferred game mode. Individual games do not necessarily apply every preset, so the title’s own menu may still be needed.
Can I hear game audio and chat at the same time with PULSE 3D?
Yes. The PULSE 3D wireless headset instruction manual says users can listen to game audio and chat audio simultaneously, and documents CHAT/GAME balancing controls. Check the headset’s manual for the controls and operation details.
