You can change your Microsoft Teams profile picture from the profile menu on desktop or from your profile settings on a phone. The exact labels depend on whether you use work or school Teams, standard Teams, or Teams Free.
For work or school accounts, an administrator or HR department may control whether profile pictures can be changed. Also, a successful upload may take time to appear everywhere in Teams.
Change your profile picture in Teams on Windows or Mac
These steps apply to standard Microsoft Teams, including most work or school accounts:
- Open Microsoft Teams and select your profile picture at the top right. If you have not added a picture, select your initials instead.
- When the account manager opens, select your profile picture again.
- Select Upload Image, then choose the picture from your computer.
- To delete the existing picture instead, select Remove Image.
- Select Save.
The new image should eventually appear beside your messages, in chats, meetings, and other places where Teams displays your identity. Microsoft’s current standard desktop path starts from the profile picture; it is not Settings → Edit profile.

Change a profile picture in Teams Free on desktop
Teams Free uses slightly different labels from standard work or school Teams:
- Select your profile picture near the top of Teams.
- Select your profile picture again.
- Select Upload picture, then choose the saved image.
- To delete it, select Remove picture.
Teams Free desktop uses Upload picture and Remove picture. It does not use the standard Teams labels Upload Image, Remove Image, and Save in the documented workflow.
For the complete Teams Free procedure, see Microsoft’s Teams Free profile instructions.

- Tap your current picture or initials at the top left.
- Tap your name to open your profile.

Use your Microsoft account page if Teams will not let you edit the picture
For a work or school account, the picture may be managed outside Teams. Try changing it from Microsoft’s account page:
- Sign in to My Account.
- Select the Edit icon on your current profile photo.
- Upload or change the picture.
- Select Save.
You can also reach the organization profile page from a Microsoft 365 desktop app by selecting File → Account → Change photo. Microsoft documents this as a redirect to the organization’s profile page, rather than as a separate Teams-only setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the edit control is missing, the upload fails repeatedly, or the image cannot be saved, your organization may have disabled profile-picture changes. Contact your Microsoft 365 administrator or HR department rather than repeatedly reinstalling Teams.
Why the new Teams picture is not showing
Teams has not finished updating
A new picture may appear in one area of Teams before it appears in channels, chats, or meetings. Microsoft says propagation can take time. Clearing the Teams cache may help the updated image appear sooner.

- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.

- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
For the Microsoft account associated with the profile, Microsoft says updates can take up to 24 hours to appear everywhere. This delay does not necessarily mean the upload failed.
The file format is unsupported
Use a normal static image file. HEIC files and animated GIFs are not supported for Microsoft account profile pictures. If a phone saves photos as HEIC, export or convert the image to a compatible static format such as JPEG or PNG before uploading.

The subject is cropped
Teams commonly displays profile pictures in a square shape. A portrait or landscape photo may therefore cut off part of the person or image. Crop it to a square before uploading, or add borders around it with an image editor so the full subject remains inside the square.
Your organization blocks changes
Work or school administrators and HR departments can prevent users from editing their profile pictures. If the controls are unavailable or the change cannot be saved both in Teams and on My Account, ask your organization’s administrator whether profile-photo editing is restricted.
Profile picture versus team picture
Your personal profile picture and a team’s picture are separate. Changing your personal photo does not change the image displayed for a team.

Where is the option to change my profile picture in Teams?
On standard desktop Teams, select your profile picture at the top right, select it again, choose Upload Image, and select Save. On Teams Free desktop, use Upload picture instead.
Why can’t I see the Edit profile option in Teams?
That is not the current standard desktop path documented by Microsoft. Start by selecting your profile picture, then select it again. If upload controls are still missing, your work or school organization may restrict profile-photo changes.

How long does it take for a new Teams picture to appear?
Teams may take time to propagate the image across channels and other locations. Microsoft says an account-wide update can take up to 24 hours. Clearing the Teams cache may help with stale displays.
Can I use a HEIC photo or animated GIF as my Teams profile picture?
HEIC files and animated GIFs are not supported for Microsoft account profile pictures. Convert the image to a compatible static format, such as JPEG or PNG, before uploading.
Does changing my Teams profile picture change the team’s picture?
No. They are separate settings. A team owner changes the team picture through More options → Manage team → Settings → Team details → Change picture.
The Bottom Line
Use the profile menu on desktop, or the profile-specific route for your phone: iPhone/iPad uses Update photo, while Android uses Edit image. Teams Free has separate labels and menus. If the change saves but is not visible immediately, allow time for synchronization; if editing is blocked, check your organization’s account policy.
