To change a Steam visual novel’s language, first open its Steam Library properties and choose a language the game supports. If the text still does not change, check the game’s own Settings or Options menu: language controls vary by title, and changing Steam’s interface language is a separate setting.
Change a visual novel’s language in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the visual novel and choose Properties.
- Find the Language control. Steam Support describes it as the Language tab; depending on the game or Steam layout, the control may appear under General.
- Select a language offered for that game, then close the properties window.
- If Steam prompts you to download language files, let the download finish before launching the game.
- Start the game and check its Settings or Options if the displayed text has not changed. Verify the title’s available languages on its Steam Store page.
Steam’s instructions note that installed games supporting the selected language may need to download language files before play: Steam Support: Steam and Games — Language Settings.
Steam’s interface language is a different setting
Changing Steam’s interface language changes the Steam client, but it does not necessarily change a third-party visual novel’s text. Steam Support says third-party titles may have language settings of their own, generally independent of Steam’s language setting.
- Open Steam > Settings > Interface. On macOS, the menu may be labeled Preferences.
- Select the interface language you want, confirm the change, and restart Steam when prompted.
For the game itself, use its per-game Properties setting or the game’s own language menu, according to that title’s instructions.

Check what “language” means for the game
Language support can differ across on-screen text, subtitles, and full audio. Steamworks treats interface text, subtitles, and full audio as separate localization categories, so a language listed for text does not by itself establish that the voice track is available in that language: Steamworks: Localization and Languages.
Kanon’s Steam Store page, for example, lists Japanese, English, and Simplified Chinese text, while its audio is Japanese only. It says the text-language choice also applies to in-game text, options, and the digital manual, and can be changed at any time: Kanon on Steam. Check the specific game’s Store page rather than assuming that its text, subtitles, and audio all share the same language options.

There is no universal in-game menu path for visual novels. Some titles use Steam’s language control, some expose a text-language option in their own settings, and some use both. For example, the Steam-hosted Dreamfall Chapters manual describes an in-game Select text language option.
Follow the instructions for the game you are playing. WHITE ALBUM: Memories like Falling Snow’s developer says it uses Steam’s built-in language switching, downloads the selected language’s files, and keeps separate save files for each language. The developer recommends changing language before starting: WHITE ALBUM language-switching instructions. That save behavior is specific to that title; do not assume saves are shared or separate across languages in other games.

Key’s planetarian HD announcements also direct players to Library > Properties > Language for supported language changes. A historical announcement described an experimental Japanese text option with incomplete original text and possible display problems. Treat older instructions as version-specific, and consult the title’s current documentation before relying on an experimental language option.

If the language option is missing or the text does not change
- Confirm the game offers that language. Check the individual title’s Steam Store page; language availability is title-specific.
- Make sure you changed the game, not just Steam. The client’s Interface setting and a third-party game’s language controls are separate in many cases.
- Wait for any language-file download. Steam may need to download the selected files before the game can use them.
- Check the game’s Settings, Options, or manual. Some titles use an in-game text-language selector instead of, or alongside, Steam Properties.
- Check text and audio separately. A translated interface or text option does not guarantee translated voice audio.
