To change a movie’s soundtrack or subtitles, start the Blu-ray on your PS5, open the disc player’s playback controls, and choose an available audio or subtitle option there. For sound output to a TV, headset, soundbar, or receiver, use Settings > Sound > Audio Output. These are separate controls: Sony says some apps, including the disc player, have audio settings that should take priority over the console-wide settings.
Which PS5 setting should I change?
Use the disc player’s playback controls to change the movie’s soundtrack, subtitles, or another audio mode offered by that disc. Use the PS5’s Settings > Sound > Audio Output menu to select where audio goes and configure the console’s output path.
| What you want to change | Where to look | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Movie language, soundtrack, or subtitle option | Disc player playback controls while the movie is running | Only options included on that disc are available; the labels and choices can differ from one movie to another. |
| TV, headset, soundbar, or receiver output | Settings > Sound > Audio Output | Sets the PS5’s audio destination and output-related preferences. |
| Audio format preference | Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority) | Sets the console’s preferred output format; it does not select a different language track on the disc. |
Sony’s guidance is to prioritize an app’s own audio settings when it has them. So if the PS5 is sending sound to the right device but the movie is speaking the wrong language, look in the player controls rather than repeatedly changing console output settings.

How do I change a Blu-ray soundtrack or subtitles?
Start playback first, then open the disc player’s on-screen playback controls and select the audio or subtitle option you want. Blu-ray menus vary, so Sony does not specify one universal button sequence or exact menu label for every disc.

- Choose the audio, soundtrack, or subtitle control shown by the player.
- Select a listed option, then resume playback to check that the change took effect.
If the language or subtitle you want is not listed, the disc may not include it. A console setting cannot add a soundtrack or subtitle that is absent from the movie.
How do I route Blu-ray sound to a TV, headset, soundbar, or receiver?
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output to choose the output device and review the available routing and format options. The right combination depends on how your PS5 is connected and which device is meant to play the sound.
TV speakers or a soundbar connected to the TV
Select the appropriate HDMI output device in Audio Output. If the PS5 is connected directly to the TV, confirm that the TV is set to play sound through its speakers or the connected soundbar. If the soundbar is connected through the TV, the PS5 may identify the TV as the HDMI device rather than the soundbar.

AV receiver
For a receiver connected over HDMI, check the HDMI device type and AV-amplifier channel-count options in Audio Output. Sony also provides speaker-position settings there. Match the channel configuration to the receiver and speakers actually in use; do not select a speaker arrangement simply because the receiver supports it if those speakers are not installed.
Headphones
Check the headphone output option in Audio Output and confirm that the intended headset is selected as the output device. If the movie still sounds wrong after the headset is selected, check the disc player’s audio track as well: device routing and soundtrack selection are different controls.
Audio Format (Priority)
Audio Format (Priority) is available in the same Audio Output menu. It affects the format the PS5 prioritizes when sending audio to the selected device. If changing it does not fix a missing soundtrack or wrong spoken language, return to the disc player’s controls; format priority is not a language selector.

Why is there no sound from a PS5 Blu-ray?
First establish whether the problem is the output device, the HDMI connection, or the disc itself. Sony’s troubleshooting advice includes checking mute and output selection, updating system software, simplifying the connection, and testing another HDMI cable or port.
- Check mute and volume. Make sure the TV, receiver, soundbar, or headset is not muted and that its volume is audible.
- Confirm the PS5 output. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the HDMI device or other intended output device.
- Test a direct connection. Connect the PS5 directly to the display over HDMI, temporarily bypassing an AV receiver, switch, or other intermediary. If audio returns, investigate that intermediary’s input, output, or settings.
- Try another HDMI port or cable. A faulty HDMI cable or port can cause audio problems. Sony says the PS5 includes an HDMI 2.1 cable and recommends it for high-performance features; another compatible cable can help isolate a connection fault.
- Update system software. Check that the console is running current system software, then test playback again.
- Try another supported disc. If a different Blu-ray or DVD has sound, the original disc or its recording may be the issue rather than the console’s output path.
Change one connection or setting at a time and retest. That makes it easier to tell whether the sound problem follows the disc, the cable, or a receiver or switch.
Which discs and PS5 models can play Blu-ray movies?
A PS5 with a disc drive can play supported disc formats, but not every PS5 model accepts discs and not every disc type is supported. Confirm both the console model and the media format before troubleshooting audio.

Sony lists support for Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE, as well as DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW. AVCHD and CPRM support is also listed. The PS5 cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, so a disc that falls into one of those categories will not become playable by changing an audio setting.
What should I do if the PS5 cannot read the disc?
A read error can be caused by the disc’s condition or recording, as well as by the console. Try the simplest checks first, then use Sony’s Safe Mode recovery option if the problem persists.
Recommended Free Tools
- Remove the disc and clean it gently with a soft cloth.
- Try another supported Blu-ray or DVD. If the second disc works, the first disc is a stronger suspect.
- Check for scratches, dust, or signs that the disc was recorded or finalized in a way the console cannot read. Sony notes that recording quality and software encoding can also affect playback.
- If multiple supported discs fail, use Safe Mode’s cache/database repair options as Sony recommends for read failures.
Protected Blu-ray playback can also depend on AACS encryption keys. Sony’s manual says those keys may need renewal and renew automatically when the console is connected to the internet. If a protected disc has trouble starting, connect the PS5 to the internet and try again before treating the disc as damaged.

How do I tell whether the problem is the disc, the PS5, or the audio setup?
Use a short isolation test rather than changing every setting at once. Each test narrows down a different part of the playback chain.
| Test result | Likely area to check next |
|---|---|
| A second supported disc plays with sound | The original disc’s condition, recording quality, or available tracks. |
| Direct HDMI to the display works, but routing through a receiver or switch does not | The intermediary device or its HDMI connection and settings. |
| The PS5 shows an output device that is not the one meant to play sound | Audio Output selection and device switching. |
| Sound works, but the wrong language plays | The disc player’s audio-track controls. |
| Several supported discs fail to read | Disc cleanliness, console software, or Sony’s Safe Mode cache/database repair guidance. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a PS5 have to stay connected to the internet to play Blu-rays?
Sony’s manual says protected Blu-rays use AACS encryption keys that may need renewal and that the keys renew automatically when the console is online. It does not say that every playback session requires an internet connection, so the evidence supports connecting when a protected disc has trouble rather than assuming constant connectivity is required.
Can I make the PS5 always choose one soundtrack for every Blu-ray?
The available guidance describes changing audio options in the disc player while a movie is running, not a console-wide default soundtrack setting. Check the disc’s own menu or playback controls each time if it starts on an undesired track.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill an HDMI receiver change which language the Blu-ray plays?
No. A receiver can affect where audio is routed and how it is output, but the soundtrack choice is a disc-player control. If the correct device is receiving sound in the wrong language, check the movie’s audio track rather than the receiver.
