Then compare the live Microsoft Store price with any offer shown on your account and, if your Xbox has a disc drive, the total cost of a compatible physical copy. A Game Pass download is subscription access, not a purchase, and canceling does not turn it into a permanent license.
What happens to your Game Pass games when you cancel?
Games you accessed through Game Pass remain tied to subscription access. Canceling does not make them yours: to keep playing a particular title without an active eligible subscription, purchase that title separately. Microsoft’s Game Pass FAQ explains the distinction between subscription access and owned games.

Before deciding what to buy, make a short list of the games you actually want to keep playing. Check each game’s current Store page and exact edition; a standard edition, deluxe edition, add-on, or bundle may have a different price and content.
Compare the ways to pay for the same game

Digital-game usage is subject to Microsoft’s license rules, including account and designated Home console licenses and the rule that a game can only be played on one console at a time under the stated conditions. Microsoft’s digital-goods terms describe these licenses. Play Anywhere is limited to participating games; check the Play Anywhere mark on the specific Store listing and the publisher’s PC requirements rather than assuming every Xbox purchase includes a PC version.

How to find a lower price on the digital version
- Open the Microsoft Store on your Xbox or visit the game’s Store listing. Search for the exact title and select the edition you intend to buy.
- Check the current price and offer details. Compare the sale price with the regular price shown on the listing, and note any end date. Prices vary by title, region, and date, so a past price is not a reliable guide to today’s cost. Xbox’s Game Pass guide dated November 17, 2020 described discounts for members, but benefits and offers can change; use what your account and live listing show now.
- Decide whether to buy now or wait. If the game is not urgent and the current price is too high, you can check again later. A future sale price or date is not guaranteed.
Can you buy a Game Pass game before it leaves?
If you are still subscribed, check the game’s Store page and your account for a current member offer before access ends. Xbox’s November 17, 2020 guide said members could use a discount to buy a game before it left the library and said, “We’ll give you a couple weeks’ notice before a game leaves.” Those are dated statements, not a guarantee of today’s discount amount, eligibility, or notice period. Confirm the current offer and any departure information shown in your account rather than budgeting around the 2020 terms.
Are used Xbox games cheaper?
They can be worth comparing if your console has a disc drive and the game is sold in a physical edition compatible with it. Compare the full delivered price—not just the listing price—and check the seller’s description for condition, included content, and the correct console generation. Availability and prices change, and a disc copy is not equivalent to an independent digital license.

In an announcement dated August 26, 2026, Xbox said, “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature,” referring to claiming a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game. Eligibility is title-specific, and Microsoft’s disc-to-digital support rules condition the entitlement on continued possession of the qualifying disc; it may be suspended or revoked if you no longer have it. The physical disc also continues to work as before. Check the rules for the exact title, and do not assume every disc converts to a standalone digital copy.

Choose based on how you play
- You want one specific game and play on Xbox: compare the exact digital Store listing with a compatible disc’s total delivered cost.
- You want to play on both Xbox and PC: verify Play Anywhere on that game’s listing and confirm the PC meets the publisher’s requirements before buying.
- You have a disc-drive console and do not mind handling discs: include used physical copies in the comparison, while checking compatibility and condition.
- You are not sure you will replay the game: compare the price of buying it with the cost and value of keeping an eligible subscription active for the period you expect to play.
