To build a simple DIY home automation system, choose a controller, connect a small number of compatible devices, and create one useful automation—such as turning on a light when a motion sensor detects movement. You do not need dedicated Home Assistant hardware: its software can run on hardware you supply or a virtual machine. The key is to check each device’s exact protocol, controller support, and internet requirements before buying.

What you need for a basic system

A starter setup has three parts: a controller, compatible smart devices, and a network that lets them communicate. The controller provides a place to manage devices and create automations. For a first project, keep the device count small—for example, one motion sensor and one light—and confirm that the controller supports both devices and the function you want.

  • Controller: Home Assistant is one option for bringing devices into a shared system. Its software is free; you can supply the hardware or use a virtual machine.
  • Devices: Choose a small number of devices for a clear purpose, such as a sensor and a light.
  • Network and protocols: Check whether each device uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Thread, Zigbee, or a vendor cloud, and what the controller needs to connect to it.

Home Assistant recommends starting with a few devices and expanding incrementally. Its guidance also cautions that compatibility or feature gaps can occur, so a product’s brand or Matter logo alone does not guarantee that every feature will work with your chosen controller. Home Assistant FAQ

Understand Matter, Thread, and Wi-Fi

Matter is an application-level smart-home standard. Thread and Wi-Fi are communication technologies that devices can use to connect. A Matter device may use Wi-Fi or Thread; the protocol label tells you only part of what you need to know about compatibility. Google describes Matter as a standard for connecting smart-home devices, while Home Assistant’s documentation distinguishes the Thread network from the application protocol running over it. Thread is a low-power mesh network, but Thread by itself does not control devices. An application protocol such as Matter or Apple HomeKit is needed as well. A Thread border router connects the Thread mesh to the local IP network. For a Matter-over-Thread setup, confirm that you have a compatible controller, supported devices, and a border router. Check compatibility before buying

Read the exact device listing and the controller’s current integration instructions before checkout. A device may connect but still lack a feature you expect, and support for device categories can change over time. Google notes that its platform’s support for device types evolves at different times. • Verify that your controller supports that device and protocol, including the required functions.
  • For Thread devices, check for a Thread border router and any controller-specific setup requirements.
  • For Matter devices, look for the Matter logo, the Wi-Fi or Thread logo, and a QR code or numeric setup code.
  • Check the commissioning prerequisites in the controller’s current instructions; a phone and network configuration may be required.

A Matter label is a useful clue, not a promise that every device feature is available in every smart-home platform. Home Assistant’s Matter documentation describes setup requirements and warns of possible compatibility or feature gaps. Home Assistant: Matter

Set up your first devices and automation

  1. Choose the controller. Decide whether to use Home Assistant Green or install Home Assistant on your own hardware or a virtual machine. For Green, connect it to your network and complete browser onboarding; for a custom installation, follow the installation instructions for your chosen hardware.
  2. Check the devices before pairing. Confirm the exact models, protocols, controller support, and setup prerequisites. Do not assume that two products will work together just because they are from familiar brands.
  3. Add only a few devices. Start with the light and motion sensor you want to use, and add them to the controller using its current device setup flow.
  4. Create one useful automation. For example, configure a motion sensor to turn on a light if both devices and the controller support that integration and action. The exact screens and available options depend on the devices and software version.
  5. Test the behavior. Trigger the sensor and confirm the light responds as intended. If it does not, check device availability, integration support, protocol setup, and network visibility before expanding the system.

Plan for internet outages and network requirements

Home Assistant devices that use local protocols can continue to work without an internet connection, but cloud-dependent devices may stop responding. Remote access and some voice-assistant features may also depend on internet services. Whether an automation keeps working therefore depends on the devices, integration, and services involved—not simply on the presence of a controller. Home Assistant FAQ

Network requirements are platform-specific. Home Assistant’s Matter troubleshooting guidance calls out IPv6 and multicast visibility between the network and the Home Assistant host. Google says IPv6 must be enabled for Matter operation in Google Home. Check your controller’s current instructions rather than applying either platform’s requirements as a universal rule. Expand carefully

Once the first automation works, add devices one at a time and check their behavior before relying on them. If you are considering Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 for Zigbee or Thread, treat it as an optional radio accessory, not a turnkey Thread solution: Home Assistant’s Green documentation says Thread support is under development, and its Thread documentation describes manual steps and work-in-progress integration for a Home Assistant-based Thread-border-router setup. Check the latest instructions before choosing it for a Thread build. Home Assistant Green · Home Assistant: Thread
