Build the smallest useful reading tracker around three things: a book record, a reading status, and a saved position that belongs to a particular reader and edition. Start with local storage so the library works offline; add accounts and synchronization only if people need the same progress on more than one device. Book lookup can make adding titles easier, but manual entry should remain available.

Decide what “your place” means

A page number is easy to enter for a printed book, but page numbering can differ between editions. Digital books may be better represented by a percentage or a format-specific locator. There is no universal position value that fits every format, so store the position type as well as its value and the time it was updated.

Google Books models a reading position as a user’s last-read position in a volume. Its documentation says a user can have one position per volume, the position can be detailed down to word resolution, and the data is private to that user (Google Books: Using the API; Google Books: Getting Started). That is a useful reference for the idea of a saved place, not a requirement to copy Google’s data format into a personal tracker.

A practical starting data model

  • Book: external identifier when available, title, authors, edition or ISBN when known, and an optional cover reference.
  • Library entry: book identifier, reading status, date added, and optional start and finish dates. Include a user identifier if the app has accounts.
  • Reading position: library-entry identifier, position kind, value, and updated-at timestamp.
  • Reading session (optional): date and progress change, if readers need a history rather than only the latest saved location.

These are app-design suggestions, not fields prescribed by Google Books or another cited service. Keep progress on the reader’s library entry, not on the global book record: two readers can be at different places, and even one reader may have different copies or editions.

Build the core reading flows

The first release can be small without feeling incomplete. It needs a way to add a book, browse a personal library, change a book’s status, and update or resume a saved place.

  1. Add a book: search by title or another available detail, then let the reader confirm the result. Provide manual entry when lookup fails or the correct edition is missing.
  2. Show the library: list books with their status and enough identifying information to distinguish editions when that matters.
  3. Open a book: show its last saved position and make the resume or edit action easy to find.
  4. Update progress: offer a field suited to the position kind, such as a page number or percentage, and save the update time with it.
  5. Change status: allow a reader to mark a book as, for example, planned, currently reading, finished, or paused. Choose the labels and any transitions that fit the app.

A session log is an optional extension rather than a prerequisite. One Reddit commenter described the workflow as adding a book and keeping a reading log for each reading session; that is an anecdotal example, not evidence of a universal preference (Reddit discussion).

Choose book lookup without depending on it

Google Books offers volume search and retrieval, which can help users discover and select book records (Google Books: Using the API). Public-data requests require an API key or OAuth token. The returned metadata may not identify the reader’s exact edition or include every field the app wants, so let users correct details and enter a book manually.

Google Books also provides private My Library and reading-position operations, but those are distinct from public volume lookup. Access to non-public user data requires OAuth authorization (Google Books: Getting Started; Google Books: Using the API). Use that integration when the product specifically needs access to a reader’s Google Books data; do not treat it as a general progress database for every book in your app.

Save locally before adding synchronization

For an Expo and React Native app, Expo SQLite is a documented option for app data, and Expo says its database persists across app restarts (Expo SQLite documentation). A local-first tracker can therefore save books and positions on the device and support its core flows without requiring an account or a network connection.

Ordinary SQLite use should not be presented as automatically encrypted. Expo documents SQLCipher as an optional encrypted SQLite implementation for Android, iOS, and macOS; it requires additional configuration and is not supported in Expo Go (Expo SQLite documentation). Review the data and platform security needs before deciding whether that setup is appropriate.

If you later add cloud sync, decide what happens when two devices edit the same position before implementing the feature. For example, the app could compare update timestamps or ask the reader to resolve a conflict. The right policy depends on the product; the cited platform documentation does not prescribe one for a reading tracker.

Add accounts only when the feature needs them

Accounts make sense when readers need cross-device synchronization, backup, sharing, or access to private data held by a provider. A tracker whose library remains on one device can avoid sign-in altogether. Keeping these choices separate also prevents an unnecessary provider login from becoming a prerequisite for basic reading progress.

Expo documents password, one-time-passcode, and OAuth approaches, along with managed authentication options. Its guidance warns against putting client secrets in app code and describes exchanging authorization codes on a server. For sensitive tokens on native platforms, Expo documents SecureStore; it distinguishes SecureStore from AsyncStorage and says AsyncStorage is not secure for that use (Expo authentication documentation; Expo OAuth documentation). Choose an account and token flow based on the services the app actually uses, and explain requested access to readers.

Choose a platform stack for the intended app

The implementation path depends on target platforms, offline behavior, data ownership, lookup needs, synchronization requirements, and the team’s familiarity with the tools. The cited documentation does not provide a complete benchmark or cost comparison, so these options should be chosen by fit rather than an assumed performance ranking.

Approach Documented fit Important scope note
Expo with React Native and SQLite Documented route to persistent local data for an app that may target iOS, Android, and web. Accounts and sync are additional product and backend decisions, not requirements for local reading progress.
Apple SwiftData Apple documents model containers, model context, queries, bindings, and DocumentGroup in a sample. The cited sample is a document-based app, not a ready-made reading-tracker blueprint.

For an Apple-only native app, SwiftData is a relevant framework to evaluate (Apple Developer: Creating a document-based app using SwiftData). For a shared iOS and Android codebase, Expo’s SQLite and authentication documentation describe one available route (Expo SQLite documentation; Expo authentication documentation). Decide based on the platforms you intend to support, the offline experience, and whether synchronization is in scope.

Keep the first version focused

  • Store each reading position with its kind and update time.
  • Associate progress with a reader’s library entry rather than shared book metadata.
  • Make book lookup helpful but optional by supporting manual entry and correction.
  • Persist the core library locally before adding accounts or cloud sync.
  • Use provider OAuth only for features that need private provider data, and handle tokens appropriately.
