A dependable kitchen order status board needs more than a green WebSocket icon. Build it around four operational signals: connection and heartbeat health, authoritative order status, event freshness, and sequence or duplicate handling. Give the display only the narrowest credential its provider supports, then reconcile from a current order read whenever a connection drops or an event is missed. This approach keeps cooks looking at a trustworthy state instead of a stale notification.
The four-signal model is an implementation framework, not a vendor-defined standard. The API documentation reviewed for this design describes different transports and guarantees, so your adapter must preserve each provider’s actual behavior rather than assume that every webhook or WebSocket has replay, retries, or identical token scope.
What are the four realtime signals for a kitchen order board?
Use the signals below as separate observability fields. A board can be connected while still showing an old order, and it can receive an event without knowing whether that event is newer than the state already on screen.
| Signal | What the board should show | Implementation evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Connection and heartbeat health | Connected, reconnecting, stale, or offline, with the last successful message time. | Some providers emit application-level heartbeat messages. The order-event documentation reviewed here requires reconnecting and subscribing again after a WebSocket interruption. Heartbeat cadence is not universal. |
| Current order status | The latest authoritative status, reason, and ready-time data for each order. | Real Time Ordering’s live GET /orders/{orderId} response includes status, statusReason, and estimatedReadyTime. Its order.updated webhook is marked planned, so availability must be checked before implementation. |
| Event freshness and latency | When the provider says an event occurred, when your service received it, and how old the displayed state is. | The planned Real Time Ordering webhook documents createdAt; Mergeport’s event example includes occurredAt. These are timestamps, not published latency guarantees. |
| Sequence, replay, and duplicate handling | Stable event identity, last applied version or timestamp, duplicate count, and reconciliation status. | Mergeport documents no replay for its WebSocket order events and requires subscriptions to be repeated after reconnect. Real Time Ordering describes a stable eventId across webhook retries and retrying for 24 hours. |
Keep these fields in telemetry even if the kitchen screen only displays a simple status badge. They let an operator distinguish a genuinely delayed kitchen from a broken integration.

How should a board measure connection and heartbeat health?
Track both transport state and application traffic. A TCP or WebSocket connection can remain open while order messages have stopped, so the board should record the last heartbeat and the last order event separately.
Use an explicit connection state machine
Represent at least connected, stale, reconnecting, and offline. On opening a socket, mark it connected only after the provider’s subscription has been accepted. On a close, timeout, or authentication error, stop presenting the feed as live and begin backoff reconnects. After reconnecting, repeat the provider’s subscription operation; a new socket does not automatically restore the old subscription in the documented order-event integration.
Define staleness without inventing a provider promise
Choose an operational threshold appropriate for your kitchen, such as a multiple of the provider’s observed heartbeat interval, and label it as your application policy. Do not copy a heartbeat interval from Real Time Ordering’s general realtime documentation into a restaurant integration: that documentation describes a trading product, not a restaurant-order API. If a provider emits no heartbeat, use a watchdog based on expected event traffic plus a periodic state read.

Make the indicator useful at a glance
- Show the time of the last accepted heartbeat or event in local time.
- Use an amber state while reconnecting and a red state only after your stale threshold is exceeded.
- Keep the last known order state visible, but label it as stale rather than silently treating it as current.
- Log close codes, subscription acknowledgements, authentication failures, and retry attempts for support staff.
How do I display authoritative current order status?
Use event notifications to trigger work, but use an authoritative order object or refresh endpoint to establish what is true. A notification tells you that something changed; it is not necessarily a complete recovery mechanism.
Read the order object after important transitions
Real Time Ordering’s live order endpoint, GET /orders/{orderId}, returns status, statusReason, and estimatedReadyTime. Render those fields from the response your adapter accepts as current. Keep the provider’s raw status and map it to kitchen labels such as “received,” “in preparation,” or “ready” only in a separate presentation layer, so a new provider status does not get mistaken for an old one.

Treat planned features as conditional
The same reference marks its order.updated webhook as planned. A production board should not assume that webhook exists merely because its schema is documented. At startup, configuration or capability discovery should select a live webhook, WebSocket feed, or polling loop that the account is actually entitled to use.
Reconcile after every interruption
When the display reconnects, query the current orders for the affected location before accepting new notifications as the complete truth. This closes the gap created by a dropped socket, a process restart, or a browser sleep cycle. If the provider has no bulk read, maintain a queue of order IDs that were visible before the interruption and refresh them individually.

Store the provider’s event timestamp and your own receipt timestamp. Their difference is an observed age, useful for detecting a slow feed, but it is not a service-level guarantee unless the provider publishes one.
Preserve the original timestamp
For the planned Real Time Ordering webhook, retain createdAt. For Mergeport events, retain occurredAt. Do not overwrite either value with the time your server parsed the payload. Store timestamps in UTC and convert only at the display edge.
Calculate two ages
- Transport age: receipt time minus provider event time. This reveals delivery delay.
- Display age: current time minus the timestamp of the state currently rendered. This reveals how long the cook has been looking at an unchanged screen.
Show an age warning when either value crosses your policy threshold. Account for clock skew: if the provider timestamp is in the future, record the anomaly and avoid displaying a negative latency.

Do not claim a latency target you have not measured
The documented timestamp fields identify when an event was created or occurred; they do not promise a maximum delivery time. Publish your own measured operating target only after collecting data from your restaurants, network, and chosen transport.

Assume that delivery behavior differs by provider. Persist a stable event identifier when one is supplied, make event application idempotent, and run a state reconciliation after reconnect.
Deduplicate before changing the screen
Use the provider’s event ID as an idempotency key. Real Time Ordering describes eventId as stable across retries and says webhook delivery can be retried for 24 hours. Store the key with the order update and ignore a second delivery that has already been applied. If no event ID exists, combine the provider’s order ID, event type, and a documented version or timestamp, while recognizing that this fallback is less safe.
Do not expect replay from Mergeport’s WebSocket
Mergeport documents that its order-event WebSocket does not provide replay. A reconnect therefore cannot request every message missed while offline. Repeat the subscription, then refresh current order state through the provider’s available read path or mark affected orders for manual verification.
Apply monotonic state rules carefully
Where the provider supplies a sequence or version, reject an older version. Where it supplies only timestamps, reject an update that is clearly older than the state already stored, but allow an explicit cancellation or correction if the provider documents that such changes can arrive out of chronological order. Keep the raw payload for audit rather than discarding an event you could need to investigate.

Which transport should a kitchen board use?
Choose transport from the provider’s documented lifecycle and recovery behavior, not from the word “realtime” alone.
| Integration pattern | Documented capability | Recovery and security considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Real Time Ordering | Live order read endpoint; order.updated webhook described as planned. |
Use the live read for reconciliation. Verify that the planned webhook is enabled for your account. The reference distinguishes kiosk and per-order credentials from broader partner access. |
| Mergeport | Opt-in WebSocket events for order status, delivery, fleet updates, and POS delivery failures; version 4.10.3 documentation. | Repeat subscriptions after reconnect. No event replay is documented, so pair the socket with a current-state read or polling strategy. |
| DoorDash Marketplace | Webhooks for orders, cancellations, and Dasher updates. | The receiver must use HTTPS and should be protected with an authentication token. The guide says production webhook use requires production access; this is provider-specific, not a universal webhook rule. |
| Polling fallback | Periodic reads of current orders when push delivery is unavailable or not enabled. | It consumes more requests and can be less immediate, but it supplies a deterministic recovery path when replay is absent. |
Build a transport adapter with the same internal output for every provider: normalized order ID, raw status, event type, provider timestamp, receipt time, event ID if present, and source transport. This keeps the board logic independent from WebSocket, webhook, or polling details.
What do scoped kiosk tokens mean, and where should credentials live?
Token scope is provider-specific. In the Real Time Ordering reference, a kiosk device token is limited to the kiosk’s own location. A per-order accessToken can be returned when an order is created for customer-facing order reads. The reference distinguishes both from broader partner API keys and says partner keys are planned for a later release, with access arranged directly in the meantime.
| Credential | Documented purpose | Recommended holder |
|---|---|---|
| Kiosk device token | Access limited to the kiosk’s own location in Real Time Ordering. | A local kiosk service or protected device configuration, never a public JavaScript bundle. |
| Per-order access token | Read access associated with an individual order created by the customer-facing flow. | The order session or a short-lived backend exchange; do not treat it as a location-wide credential. |
| Partner API key | Broader partner access, described as a planned capability in the cited reference. | A server-side integration service with rotation and secret storage. |
Do not assume another vendor offers per-location kiosk tokens, and do not embed a broad API key in arbitrary client code. Have the backend call the provider, then send the board only the minimum normalized data it needs. Rotate credentials, revoke a device when it leaves a location, and keep separate credentials for development and production.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I deploy the physical kiosk workstation?
A fixed workstation is a plausible deployment, but the API does not require a particular tablet model or a separate stand. Oracle’s Simphony Kiosk JavaScript API guide, dated June 2026, states that the API is loaded and accessible only when the workstation is in Kiosk mode and a web UI is loaded by Kiosk Handler in a local browser.

What the kiosk mode requirement changes
Plan for a managed local browser session rather than a normal consumer browser tab. The guide says initialization establishes WebSocket connections and that the API can send print commands to a local receipt printer. Your deployment checklist should therefore include kiosk-mode startup, local network access, browser recovery after reboot, and printer permissions if printing is part of the workflow.
Is a tablet kiosk stand required?
No. A stand is optional hardware for mounting a fixed display at a pass or expo station. No particular model or tested hardware combination is established here; select hardware based on screen readability, heat, cleaning, power, and network reliability.
How do I implement the board from connection to recovery?
Use this sequence to keep operational state and transport concerns separate.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Define the normalized state. Store order ID, location, raw provider status, status reason, estimated ready time, provider timestamp, receipt time, event ID, source transport, and a stale flag.
- Provision the narrowest credential. For a provider that supports a location-scoped kiosk token, bind it to one location. Keep broader keys on the backend.
- Start the transport adapter. Open the documented WebSocket or webhook receiver, authenticate, and wait for a subscription acknowledgement or a verified HTTPS request before marking the feed connected.
- Record heartbeats and events separately. Update connection health on heartbeat messages where supplied, and update order freshness only when an order event or state read is accepted.
- Make event application idempotent. Check event IDs or your documented fallback key before changing an order’s state.
- Render state with age. Show the mapped kitchen label, estimated ready time, and a visible stale or reconnecting indicator when your policy threshold is exceeded.
- Reconcile after disruption. On reconnect, repeat the subscription, read current orders, compare them with local state, and clear stale flags only after reconciliation succeeds.
- Test provider-specific failures. Exercise expired tokens, duplicate deliveries, delayed timestamps, dropped sockets, browser restarts, and unavailable planned features before installing the display in a live kitchen.
What are the common failure modes and fixes?
- The screen says connected but orders stop changing: Separate heartbeat health from order traffic, mark the feed stale, and perform a current-state read.
- Orders disappear after a network blip: Re-subscribe after reconnect and reconcile; do not expect replay from a provider that documents none.
- The same order flips backward: Enforce event-idempotency and monotonic version or timestamp checks, then inspect retained raw payloads.
- A webhook works in testing but not production: Confirm HTTPS, authentication-token handling, account entitlement, and any production-access requirement documented by that provider.
- A browser token exposes too much data: Move provider calls to a backend and issue the kiosk only location-scoped or short-lived data access supported by the vendor.
- Ready times look inconsistent: Preserve the provider’s original timezone and timestamp, convert only for display, and flag future timestamps as clock-skew anomalies.
Availability labels and token programs can change. The cited Real Time Ordering reference reports API v1.0.0, Mergeport documents version 4.10.3, and the Oracle kiosk guide is dated June 2026; verify current capabilities and scopes when you configure an account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a kitchen status board work without WebSockets?
Yes. A polling loop against an authoritative order read can provide deterministic recovery when push events are unavailable or replay is not offered. Tune the interval to the provider’s request limits and show the resulting age so staff know the display is refresh-based.
Should the browser receive the provider API key directly?
Usually no. Keep broad credentials in a server-side adapter and send the kiosk only normalized order data or a narrowly scoped credential that the provider explicitly supports for that location.
How should I audit a disputed order status?
Retain the raw event, provider timestamp, receipt timestamp, event identifier, and the normalized state transition. This lets you distinguish a late delivery, a duplicate retry, and a genuine provider-side status change.

What should happen when the display computer reboots during service?
Start in a visibly non-live state, restore credentials from protected storage, reconnect the transport, repeat its subscription, and complete a current-order reconciliation before clearing the stale indicator.
