You can build a Home Assistant alarm by combining an alarm_control_panel entity with door and window contacts, motion sensors, a siren, and automations for arming, disarming, and responding to an alarm. The panel manages the alarm’s state; sensors detect events, and sirens or notifications deliver the response. The key is to match each alarm mode to who is home, then test every sensor and the complete alert sequence before relying on it.

What do you need for a Home Assistant alarm system?

A working system has distinct parts: a control layer that tracks alarm state, sensors that report events, and actions that respond to those events. Notifications and camera recording are optional additions, not prerequisites for a basic audible alarm.

Part Role What to check
Home Assistant installation Runs the integrations and automations. Decide what should happen if Home Assistant, its network connection, or power is unavailable.
alarm_control_panel entity Arms, disarms, and can trigger the security system. It also represents states such as disarmed, armed home, armed away, pending, and triggered. Confirm the integration supports the modes and actions you intend to use.
Door and window contacts Report whether a protected opening is open or closed, usually through a binary sensor. Check that the sensor appears in Home Assistant and changes state when the opening is operated.
Motion sensors Detect movement in selected interior areas. Plan which sensors are active in each mode so normal movement at home does not trigger an alarm.
Siren Provides an audible response; some warning devices also support a strobe. Verify that the integration exposes the siren and any sound, strobe, level, or duration controls you need.
People, notifications, and cameras Provide presence inputs and optional remote alerts or recording. Test the actual entities and delivery path you plan to use.

Home Assistant’s Abode and SimpliSafe integrations are examples of commercial systems that can expose an alarm panel along with entry contacts, motion, smoke or carbon-monoxide sensors, and siren entities. The entities available depend on the integration and installed system; do not assume every setup exposes every device or alarm feature.

Which sensors and siren should you choose?

Start with contact sensors on the doors and windows you want protected. Add interior motion coverage for away mode, then decide whether particular rooms should be included at night. Sensor connectivity and entity support matter more than a product’s label: a device must be compatible with the coordinator and Home Assistant integration used in your installation.

Door and window contacts

Choose a contact sensor that appears as a binary sensor and changes state when its protected opening is opened. Zigbee contact sensors are one option, but a Zigbee logo alone does not establish compatibility. Check the device’s Zigbee profile against your coordinator and the integration you use, and verify the resulting entity in Home Assistant before mounting sensors throughout the home.

Motion sensors

Use motion sensors to add interior coverage where movement should count as an intrusion. Their usefulness depends on the mode: movement in a hallway may be relevant while the home is empty but expected when occupants are sleeping or moving around at home. Decide which areas belong in away, home, and night behavior before creating automations.

Siren and safety devices

A Zigbee smart siren can complement the sensors if it is supported by your setup. Home Assistant’s ZHA warning-device action supports controls for sound, strobe, level, and duration, but those controls depend on the device and integration exposing them. Treat smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors as safety inputs, and configure life-safety devices according to local code and the manufacturer’s instructions.

How should you use away, home, and night modes?

Choose modes according to who is in the house and which areas may be occupied. Away mode is for an empty home and can include perimeter and interior sensors; home or night mode should preserve perimeter protection while allowing expected movement inside.

Mode or state Typical purpose Design question
Disarmed Alarm is not armed. Should safety sensors or other independent automations still operate?
Armed away Nobody is home; perimeter and interior coverage can be active. How will the system determine that the last person has left?
Armed home People are home; perimeter protection can remain active while normal interior movement is allowed. Which interior sensors must be excluded or bypassed?
Armed night Overnight protection with movement allowed in selected areas. Which rooms or routes will occupants use while the alarm is armed?
Pending or arming Intermediate states used by some panels during entry or exit delays. Does the selected integration support these states and the delays you want?
Triggered The panel reports that the alarm has activated. Which siren, light, notification, or camera actions should follow?

Arming modes, PIN requirements, delay support, and bypass behavior depend on the selected alarm integration. Do not build automations on the assumption that every panel supports every mode or delay; check the entity’s available actions and test the behavior in your setup.

How do you add an alarm panel and sensors?

First make sure the devices appear in Home Assistant as usable entities. Then confirm that the alarm panel exposes the modes and actions your design requires before creating the daily automations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set up Home Assistant and the device integration. Add the integration or alarm component that will provide the panel entity. For wireless sensors, set up the appropriate coordinator or hub and integration.
  2. Pair and identify each sensor. Open and close each protected door or window, or move in front of each motion sensor. Confirm that the corresponding binary sensor changes state in Home Assistant.
  3. Confirm the alarm entity’s capabilities. Check that the alarm_control_panel entity offers the arming modes and actions you intend to call. Find out whether it requires a PIN and whether it supports entry or exit delays and bypasses.
  4. Add the siren and optional response devices. Confirm that Home Assistant can control the warning device, and that notification and camera entities are available if you plan to use them.
  5. Write down the mode-to-sensor plan. For example, specify which perimeter and interior sensors should be active away from home and which areas should allow movement at night.
  6. Create one automation at a time. Home Assistant automations use triggers, optional conditions, and actions. The visual editor can create them without YAML.

How do you arm the alarm when everyone leaves?

Use a presence trigger, then check that nobody remains before calling alarm_control_panel.alarm_arm_away. The extra check helps avoid arming away just because one person left while others are still home.

  1. Create an automation with a trigger based on a person leaving the home zone.
  2. Add a condition that verifies nobody remains home, using the people or presence entities configured in your installation.
  3. Add the action alarm_control_panel.alarm_arm_away and select the correct panel entity.
  4. If the panel supports an exit delay, test whether it gives occupants enough time to leave and whether the selected integration starts that delay as expected.
  5. Test the automation with one person leaving while another remains, then with the last person leaving.

Presence is an input, not proof that a door is secure. If a contact reports an open entry when the system arms, observe how the specific panel handles it rather than assuming it will block arming, bypass the opening, or raise an alert.

How do you disarm the alarm when someone arrives?

Trigger on an authorised person entering the home zone and call alarm_control_panel.alarm_disarm. If the panel requires a PIN, pass it in the action’s data.code field.

  1. Create an automation triggered by an authorised person entering the home zone.
  2. Add the disarm action for the intended alarm-panel entity.
  3. Include the PIN in data.code only when the panel requires one, and follow the integration’s requirements for the action.
  4. Test the arrival workflow and confirm that the panel reaches the intended disarmed state.

Do not treat a presence trigger as a substitute for checking how your integration authenticates disarming. PIN support and behavior vary by panel, and the arrival trigger must represent a person you intend to authorize.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you arm the alarm at bedtime?

Use a time trigger to call alarm_control_panel.alarm_arm_night, then make sure the selected sensors match the household’s overnight movement. A bedtime schedule is only useful if it does not arm areas occupants need to cross.

  1. Create an automation with a time trigger that matches the bedtime schedule you want.
  2. Add the night-arm action for the correct alarm panel.
  3. Exclude or bypass bedroom and route sensors only if the integration supports the required behavior.
  4. Test the mode while occupants are still awake so you can verify which movement is allowed and which sensor events cause an alarm response.

How do you trigger a siren and phone alert?

Create an automation triggered by the panel entering its triggered state, then add the siren and notification actions you want. Home Assistant’s alarm-triggered trigger fires when an alarm panel entity enters that state.

  1. Create an automation using the alarm_control_panel.triggered trigger for the alarm entity.
  2. Add an action to turn on or activate the siren. If supported by the warning device and integration, configure sound, strobe, level, or duration.
  3. Add an urgent notification action for the phone or notification service you use.
  4. Optionally add camera recording or lighting actions if those entities and controls are available.
  5. Run a controlled test and check both the panel state and each response, including receipt of the phone notification.

The siren and phone alert are separate actions: successful triggering of one does not prove that the other works. Test their complete chain and inspect the automation trace if an action does not run.

Can a panic button or smoke detector trigger the alarm?

A binary sensor changing to on can call alarm_control_panel.alarm_trigger. For smoke-triggered behavior, gate the automation so it does not trigger the alarm panel while that panel is disarmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use the binary sensor’s transition to on as the trigger.
  2. Add any required conditions, including a check of the panel state for smoke-triggered behavior.
  3. Call alarm_control_panel.alarm_trigger on the intended panel.
  4. Test the automation without compromising the normal operation or configuration of a life-safety device.

Smoke and carbon-monoxide devices have safety responsibilities beyond an intrusion alarm. Keep their configuration consistent with local code and the manufacturer’s directions.

How do you test the system and troubleshoot failures?

Test individual sensors first, then exercise the full arm-to-alert sequence. Home Assistant’s Trigger alarm action can be run from Settings > Tools > Actions or from an automation editor; disarm the panel after a test.

Test each input and response

  1. Operate every contact sensor and confirm that its binary-sensor state changes as expected.
  2. Test each motion sensor in the area and mode where it should matter.
  3. Arm the panel, open a protected door, and observe the pending or triggered behavior the integration provides.
  4. Confirm that the siren operates and that the intended phone notification arrives.
  5. Disarm using the method occupants are expected to use, including the PIN if required.
  6. Run the Trigger alarm action to test alarm-response actions separately, then disarm the panel.

Diagnose a step that fails

  • A sensor does not change state: check that it is paired with the intended coordinator or hub, that the correct entity is being watched, and that opening or motion actually produces a state change.
  • The panel does not arm or disarm: check the selected entity, supported mode or action, and whether the integration requires a PIN.
  • An automation does not run: inspect its trace to see whether the trigger fired and whether a condition prevented its actions.
  • The alarm triggers but the siren is silent: test the warning device and its exposed controls independently, then check the action’s selected entity and configuration.
  • The siren works but the phone is not alerted: verify the notification action and its delivery path separately from the alarm trigger.

Finally, consider what happens if Home Assistant, the Zigbee coordinator, Wi-Fi, power, or a phone becomes unavailable. The behavior is integration- and system-dependent; Home Assistant’s documented entity model and actions do not guarantee a particular system’s uptime or operation during an outage. Decide what level of resilience you need and test the failure scenarios that matter to your household.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Home Assistant alarm need an internet connection?

There is no single answer for every installation: local versus cloud dependence varies by device and integration. Check the integration’s documented behavior for internet loss, then test the specific functions you expect to keep working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can every Zigbee sensor work with every Home Assistant Zigbee coordinator?

No universal compatibility follows from the Zigbee label alone. Confirm support for the sensor’s profile in the coordinator and integration you plan to use, then verify that Home Assistant exposes the needed binary-sensor entity.

Will a Home Assistant alarm keep working if the server loses power?

The alarm-panel entity and automations depend on the components that run them, so there is no universal guarantee of operation through a power outage. Evaluate your installation’s power and network dependencies rather than assuming an automation can respond while its host is unavailable.
