You can make a smaller custom figure with dowels and plywood, or use a ready-made oversized skeleton as the focal point. The support and setup requirements differ, so follow the instructions for the exact decoration you choose.
Choose a custom build or an oversized focal point

The dimensions and setup advice in Home Depot’s 12-foot skeleton care and maintenance guide, updated April 7, 2026, apply to its named model. The guide notes that other manufacturers’ skeletons may differ in height, weight, materials and specifications. Hallmark labels its DIY Halloween Graveyard Skeletons tutorial “Advanced”; its materials and dimensions are a starting point, not a certified outdoor structure.
Build a small custom skeleton display
Gather the materials
Hallmark’s project lists an inexpensive plastic skeleton, two 3-foot half-inch dowels per skeleton, plywood for the base, modeling clay, insulation foam, wood glue, black spray paint, wire, a power drill and a knife. Optional details include foam or plastic eyes, clothes, wigs and hats. Its method involves drilling the base, gluing in dowels, cutting holes in skeleton parts to fit over the supports, then assembling and securing the figure with foam.
Assemble and personalize it
- Paint the plywood base black and let it dry as directed on the paint label.
- Drill holes for the dowels and glue the dowels into the base. Allow the glue to set according to its label.
- Fit the skeleton parts over the supports, making only the openings needed for the parts to fit. Hallmark’s tutorial uses a knife for this work; handle it carefully and keep it away from children.
- Assemble the figure and use foam to secure components as shown in Hallmark’s tutorial. Do not treat this method as proof of a wind rating or load capacity.
- Add a pose and costume details. A wave, seated posture, hat, wig or familiar clothing can make the scene read as playful rather than frightening. This is a styling choice, not a tested recipe.
For a quicker project, keep the base-and-support idea but skip intricate hand or eye modifications. Choose a pose and accessories that are easy to set up and remove.

Set up an oversized skeleton with model-specific care
Home Depot describes its particular 12-foot skeleton as having high-density polyethylene bones and battery-powered LED eyes. Its care and maintenance guide recommends this setup sequence:
- Review the instructions that came with the product, organize the parts and check that they are present.
- Choose flat, level ground and install the supplied base stabilizers and ground stakes as directed.
- Use suitable help to assemble and raise the figure. Home Depot recommends at least three people to stand its model upright; assembly includes a ladder step, so follow the product instructions and use appropriate equipment and assistance.
- Keep children, pets and adults from leaning on the standing skeleton.
Home Depot calls its model weather resistant but advises taking it down when windy weather is expected. It gives no wind-speed threshold, and this guidance should not be applied to other models. Keep the skeleton away from fire pits and other heat sources; do not pressure wash it or use bleach.

Style the yard so the display feels welcoming
Make the skeleton the focal point, then add only a few compatible decorations. Home Depot’s guide suggests colored landscape lighting, a group of smaller skeletons or a themed yard scene. For a lighter mood, use a relaxed pose, costume-like accessories and colors that suit the rest of the yard rather than piling on frightening props.
- Keep the visitor route clear of the base, stakes, cords and decorations.
- If you add powered lights or effects, follow their product labels and applicable electrical safety instructions. The available product guidance does not establish one universal outdoor electrical setup.
- A seated scene can provide another creative direction. A creator’s example combines a skeleton with a 32-gallon trash can, zip ties, clear tubing, spray foam, paint, a bucket, a pump and lights; treat it as inspiration, not a tested plan or endorsement of its water and electrical arrangement. Take down and store the display
For Home Depot’s 12-foot model, its guide recommends cleaning with mild soap and water and a non-abrasive brush, then disassembling the skeleton before storage. Remove the LED-eye batteries and store the parts away from heat and moisture, using the original box or suitably sized plastic storage totes. These care instructions apply to that model; check the label and instructions for other decorations.
