A golden-hour service is a solar-event calculator plus a reliable time-and-location data pipeline. Give it latitude, longitude, date, and a defined solar convention; it returns the morning and evening low-sunlight intervals in a user’s time zone. A 3D globe is a separate presentation layer that lets people choose coordinates and see those intervals across Earth. You can build the calculation locally with JavaScript, call a hosted service, or combine both. The difficult work is not drawing the globe: it is documenting the sun-angle convention, converting UTC instants correctly, validating coordinates, and representing places where sunrise or sunset does not occur.
This guide lays out that architecture, compares practical data sources, shows how to handle polar day and night, and identifies which details of the project described by the title still require the author’s own repository or documentation.
What does a golden-hour API actually calculate?
Golden hour is not a fixed clock time. It is an interval derived from the Sun’s apparent altitude at a particular latitude, longitude, date, and time standard. The API first solves for solar events, then converts the resulting instants into a display time. If any of those inputs or conventions change, the reported interval can change too.
Recommended Free Tools
The inputs
- Latitude: a number from -90 to 90 degrees.
- Longitude: a number from -180 to 180 degrees, with one documented sign convention.
- Date: the civil date for which events are requested. A date near midnight can produce events on either side of a UTC day boundary.
- Time basis: UTC instants are unambiguous; local civil times require an IANA time-zone identifier and daylight-saving rules.
- Solar convention: the altitude or zenith threshold used for each event, plus any atmospheric-refraction correction.
The outputs
A useful response distinguishes an instant from its formatted representation. Return an ISO 8601 UTC timestamp for every event you calculate, then provide a local rendering when a time zone is known. Golden-hour fields should identify whether they describe the morning or evening interval; labels such as goldenHourEnd and goldenHour follow the convention used by SunCalc, where the former is the morning endpoint and the latter the evening start.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Also return a status for events that do not exist. A missing sunrise is not the same as a failed request, and a blank string is not enough information for a client to decide what happened.
How are sunrise, sunset, and golden hour derived?
The calculation reduces the Sun’s position to an altitude-crossing problem. For a chosen threshold, the algorithm computes solar declination and the equation of time for the date, derives the hour angle at the requested latitude, and converts that angle into a UTC event time. NOAA’s published reference gives the equations for sunrise, sunset, and solar noon.
The 90.833° convention
For the ordinary sunrise and sunset calculation, NOAA uses a zenith of 90.833°. Its 2016 Global Monitoring Laboratory reference describes this as an approximate correction for atmospheric refraction at the horizon and the apparent size of the solar disk. That number is a convention, not a promise that a camera or a person will see the first or last ray at exactly the same instant.

Why longitude alone cannot determine local clock time
Longitude determines the relationship between a location and UTC; it does not identify a civil time zone. Political boundaries, daylight-saving transitions, and historical rule changes mean that the same longitude can be displayed under different local offsets. Keep the astronomical result in UTC and apply an IANA zone only at the formatting boundary.
Which data source should power the API?
There are three defensible approaches: call a hosted endpoint, calculate in your own process, or use a hybrid with a local fallback. The right choice depends on control, operational risk, and the fields your globe needs.
| Option | What it provides | Advantages | Responsibilities and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunrise-Sunset.org | Documented free JSON responses based on latitude and longitude; fields can include sunrise, sunset, twilight, golden-hour, solar-position, and moon data. | Fastest route to a network-backed prototype with more than horizon events. | Check current availability, rate limits, and commercial terms. When its data is displayed, the service requires a visible link attribution on the page or app. |
| U.S. Naval Observatory service | Rise, set, transit, and civil-twilight information for a specified location; the documented date range is 1700 through 2100 and responses can be returned as GeoJSON. | Useful for historical dates, transit data, and geospatial workflows. | Map its event vocabulary to your golden-hour model and verify service policy before production use. |
| SunCalc | A dependency-free JavaScript library for sun position, sunlight phases, moon position, moonrise/moonset, and lunar phases. Its times include goldenHourEnd and goldenHour. |
Local calculations avoid a request on every globe interaction and work offline. | You own input validation, time-zone formatting, version pinning, testing, and any interpretation of null or polar results. |
Do not describe a service as unlimited merely because it is advertised as free. Read its current terms, credit requirements, request limits, and permission for commercial use before exposing it through a public proxy.

How do I design a response that clients can trust?
Separate calculation, status, and presentation. A client should be able to tell whether an event is valid, absent because of latitude, or unavailable because an upstream service failed.
A practical response shape
The following is an illustrative contract, not the undocumented schema of the titled project:
{
"location": {"latitude": 51.5074, "longitude": -0.1278},
"date": "2026-10-26",
"timezone": "Europe/London",
"calculation": {"zenith": 90.833, "source": "local-suncalc"},
"events": {
"sunrise": {"utc": "2026-10-26T06:42:00Z", "local": "2026-10-26T06:42:00+00:00", "status": "ok"},
"sunset": {"utc": "2026-10-26T16:44:00Z", "local": "2026-10-26T16:44:00+00:00", "status": "ok"},
"goldenHourMorningEnd": {"utc": "...", "local": "...", "status": "ok"},
"goldenHourEveningStart": {"utc": "...", "local": "...", "status": "ok"}
}
}
Use null for an absent instant and pair it with an explicit status such as alwaysUp, alwaysDown, or notComputed. Keep the source and convention in metadata so a later client can explain why two calculations differ. Never silently substitute the server’s time zone for the user’s location.
How do I calculate events locally with SunCalc?
Local JavaScript is a good fit for a globe because dragging to a new coordinate does not have to wait for a network request. SunCalc’s documented API supplies the solar times and position; your application still has to validate and format the result.
- Install and pin a version. Add SunCalc as a dependency and lock the version so a future release cannot silently change results.
- Validate the coordinate. Reject non-numeric values and enforce the latitude and longitude ranges before calling the library.
- Construct the date carefully. Pass a date representing the requested civil day, and document whether your server constructs it in UTC or in the selected IANA zone.
- Read the events. Call
SunCalc.getTimes(date, latitude, longitude); inspectsunrise,sunset,goldenHourEnd, andgoldenHour. - Guard every value. A rise or set field can be
nullat high latitudes. Do not calltoISOString()until you have checked that the value is a real date. - Format at the edge. Serialize the valid instant in UTC, then use the requested IANA zone for the human-facing local string.
const times = SunCalc.getTimes(date, lat, lon);
function event(value, timezone) {
if (!value) return { utc: null, local: null, status: "no_event" };
return {
utc: value.toISOString(),
local: formatInTimeZone(value, timezone),
status: "ok"
};
}
const result = {
sunrise: event(times.sunrise, timezone),
sunset: event(times.sunset, timezone),
goldenHourMorningEnd: event(times.goldenHourEnd, timezone),
goldenHourEveningStart: event(times.goldenHour, timezone)
};
The formatInTimeZone function is intentionally left to your date-time library or platform APIs: its job is formatting, not changing the instant. Keep the astronomical calculation independent from that display code.
How should a hosted API be integrated?
A hosted source reduces astronomy code but moves reliability and policy questions into your application. Put the call behind your own narrow endpoint rather than exposing provider-specific fields throughout the globe UI.
- Normalize the request. Accept latitude, longitude, date, and an optional IANA time zone. Reject malformed values with a 400 response.
- Call the provider server-side. Keep credentials, attribution configuration, and retry logic out of browser code when the provider’s terms require it.
- Map fields into your contract. Preserve the provider’s raw status internally, but expose stable names for sunrise, sunset, twilight, and both golden-hour boundaries.
- Cache by complete input. The cache key must include coordinate precision, date, provider, and convention. A result for one zone can still be reused as a UTC instant, but its local rendering cannot be copied blindly to another zone.
- Fail explicitly. Distinguish provider timeout, quota response, invalid location, and genuine no-event conditions. A globe marker should not show “polar night” when the network simply failed.
- Display required credit. If the page shows Sunrise-Sunset.org data, include the service’s required visible link attribution. Check the current terms of every other source separately.
How do I handle polar day, polar night, and missing events?
At high latitudes, a requested day can have no sunrise, no sunset, or no horizon crossing at all. The correct behavior is to return a machine-readable condition, not to invent a time or wrap a value into the next day.

Always up
The Sun remains above the selected horizon threshold for the relevant period. Sunrise- and sunset-related fields are absent; the response can report alwaysUp. Golden-hour intervals that depend on a crossing may also be absent, even though the Sun’s altitude is changing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Always down
The Sun remains below the threshold. Return alwaysDown and null event instants. Clients can then show a plain-language explanation instead of a misleading midnight timestamp.
Near-polar transition days
On days close to the transition, numerical rounding and the selected altitude convention can determine whether an event exists. Retain the provider or library’s status, avoid rounding coordinates before calculation, and test dates on both sides of the transition.
SunCalc documents null rise/set-related values and reports always-up or always-down conditions. That behavior is preferable to a fabricated value and should be preserved when you wrap the library.
How does a 3D globe turn those results into a useful interface?
The globe should be treated as a coordinate picker and comparison view, not as the source of astronomical truth. Keep the data pipeline separate from rendering: select a point, validate it, calculate events, then project the result into the scene.

Coordinate selection
- Convert a click or pointer ray into latitude and longitude using the globe’s documented projection.
- Show the numeric coordinate and allow manual editing for repeatable requests.
- Normalize longitude at the antimeridian so points just west and east of 180 degrees do not create duplicate cache keys.
- Debounce pointer-driven requests; calculate only after the user releases the drag or pauses selection.
Lighting layers
A simple marker can show the selected location and a timeline can show its event sequence. A more ambitious view can shade the day/night terminator or color regions by the current solar altitude. Those layers must use the same UTC instant and solar-position convention as the API; otherwise the globe and the event list will disagree at the edges.

What should I test before calling the API production-ready?
Solar calculations can look correct at one city and fail at a date-line or polar location. Build a small test matrix that exercises both astronomy and software boundaries.
- Equatorial location: verify ordinary sunrise, sunset, and both golden-hour fields.
- Mid-latitude summer and winter: check that local daylight-saving changes alter the displayed offset but not the UTC instant.
- Antimeridian locations: ensure date conversion and longitude normalization do not move an event to the wrong civil day.
- Both hemispheres: confirm that morning and evening labels are tied to event order, not to a northern-hemisphere assumption.
- Polar-day and polar-night dates: assert null values and explicit statuses.
- Invalid inputs: test missing fields, NaN, out-of-range coordinates, impossible dates, and unknown time zones.
- Provider failures: simulate timeout, rate-limit, malformed JSON, and partial responses.
- Cross-checks: compare a few dates against NOAA’s equations or an independent service while documenting the selected convention.
Record the input, convention, source version, and output in each test fixture. That makes a future library upgrade auditable rather than a visual guess.

Calling every low-light interval “golden hour”
Providers use different altitude thresholds and names. Publish the convention you use and preserve the source metadata; otherwise users cannot explain a discrepancy with a photography app or an observatory table.
Mixing local dates with UTC dates
Constructing a JavaScript Date from an unqualified date string can shift the calculation across midnight depending on the runtime. Parse the civil date deliberately, calculate the event, and serialize the resulting instant.
Assuming every field is a date
High-latitude nulls are expected data. Calling date methods on them creates a client error precisely where users most need an explanation.
Hiding upstream policy
Attribution, rate limits, and commercial permissions are part of the API design. A technically correct globe can still violate a provider’s terms if credit is omitted or traffic is proxied without permission.
Letting the renderer own the calculation
Embedding solar math inside animation callbacks makes results hard to test and can produce frame-dependent behavior. Calculate once for a normalized request, cache the result, and let the globe consume immutable event data.

Is a free golden-hour API worth building?
Yes, when the goal is a transparent developer tool or an interactive globe rather than a guarantee of unlimited commercial infrastructure. A hosted source can get a prototype running quickly; local SunCalc calculations remove network latency and work offline; a hybrid can use local results for interaction and a vetted upstream source for additional fields or cross-checks.
The value is in making assumptions visible. Return UTC instants, explain the solar convention, preserve null and always-up/always-down states, and show required attribution. With those safeguards, the globe becomes a clear way to explore where daylight phases occur instead of a decorative layer that hides unreliable time handling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use golden-hour results for a commercial app?
Possibly, but “free” does not settle licensing. Review the current provider terms for commercial use, request limits, caching, and attribution; if you calculate locally, also comply with the chosen library’s license and publish your own service limits.
Why do two golden-hour calculators give different times?
They may use different Sun-altitude thresholds, refraction assumptions, elevation handling, or time-zone formatting rules. Compare the UTC instants and documented conventions before comparing the displayed clock times.
How precise are golden-hour predictions at a real camera location?
The equations describe an idealized observer at a coordinate and convention. Terrain, buildings, elevation, atmospheric conditions, and the camera’s horizon can make the visible light change earlier or later than the calculated boundary.
Should a globe request events continuously while I drag?
Usually no. Debounce or defer requests until the pointer pauses, then cache results by normalized coordinate and date. This reduces provider traffic and prevents stale responses from overwriting the newest selection.
