Use fish as your interactive shell, Homebrew as the installer, and then add the AI tools that match where you want inference to run. The reliable order is: install Homebrew with its bash-based installer, load Homebrew’s environment into fish, install fish, place persistent settings in ~/.config/fish/config.fish, and install either Ollama, the OpenAI CLI, or both. Ollama can run models on the Mac or use its cloud workflow; the OpenAI CLI sends requests to the OpenAI API. This guide gives fish-native commands, keeps API credentials out of project files, and shows how to diagnose the PATH and startup problems that most often make a new setup appear broken.
What does a fish-based AI setup on macOS look like?
fish is the interactive command shell. It provides syntax highlighting, autosuggestions, and tab completion, while Homebrew supplies repeatable installs for command-line software. Ollama and the OpenAI CLI sit above that shell as separate AI clients: Ollama can use local models or its cloud service, whereas the OpenAI CLI calls the OpenAI API.
These layers are independent. A fish configuration problem can prevent brew or ollama from being found even when the software is installed, and an authentication problem can prevent an AI client from working even when fish is healthy. Testing each layer in order makes failures easier to isolate.

You need a Mac with an administrator account, a working Terminal session, and an internet connection for the installers and any hosted models. Decide whether you want local inference, cloud inference, or both before choosing an AI runtime; local Ollama performance depends on the Mac’s hardware, while API calls move inference away from the computer.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Know the processor family. Apple Silicon Homebrew installations normally use
/opt/homebrew. Keep the prefix printed by the installer available because your PATH setup must use the actual location. - Keep an ordinary shell available. Homebrew’s installer is run with bash even if fish will be your daily shell.
- Choose a credential method. The OpenAI CLI uses
OPENAI_API_KEY. Ollama’s cloud workflow requires signing in through its setup flow; local use does not move model inference to a hosted API. - Plan where settings belong. User-wide fish settings go in
~/.config/fish/config.fish; optional startup snippets can go in~/.config/fish/conf.d/.
How do I install Homebrew and make it available in fish?
Run Homebrew’s official installer in bash, follow every post-install command it prints, and then verify the result from fish. On Apple Silicon, the expected prefix is /opt/homebrew; do not substitute a different path if your installer reports another one.
- Open Terminal and run the current installer command shown on Homebrew’s official installation page. The installer itself uses bash, so launch it from bash if your current terminal starts fish.
- At the end, read the installer’s “Next steps” output. It tells you how to load
brew shellenv; skipping that step is the usual reason a new terminal reportsbrew: command not found. - Start fish with
fish, then load the environment using the prefix reported by the installer. For a standard Apple Silicon installation, the fish command is:
eval (/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)
If your prefix is different, replace /opt/homebrew/bin/brew with the path printed by Homebrew. Confirm that the command is visible:
type -q brew; and brew --version
To load Homebrew automatically in every fish session, put a guarded version in ~/.config/fish/config.fish:
if test -x /opt/homebrew/bin/brew
eval (/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)
end
The guard prevents a startup error on a Mac where that prefix does not exist. If the installer reports another prefix, change the test and command to match it. Open a new terminal after saving the file and run type -q brew; and brew --version again.
How do I install and try fish?
Once Homebrew resolves in fish, install the shell with brew install fish. The fish project describes fish as a user-friendly shell for macOS, Linux, and related systems.
- Install fish:
brew install fish
- Launch it for a trial session:
fish
- Check that you are actually running fish:
status --current-command
When you are finished testing, run exit to return to the parent shell. You do not have to make fish the macOS login shell to use it for AI work; keeping the existing login shell while launching fish from Terminal is a low-risk first step. If you later change the default shell, retain a working fallback so you can edit configuration after a syntax mistake.
Where do fish aliases, PATH entries, and variables go?
Put personal, always-on settings in ~/.config/fish/config.fish. fish also loads files in ~/.config/fish/conf.d/ at startup, which is useful when you want separate snippets for Homebrew, credentials, or project tooling.

Create the configuration directory
mkdir -p ~/.config/fish
Create or edit the main file with any text editor. A minimal, readable configuration might contain:
# ~/.config/fish/config.fish
# Homebrew (Apple Silicon default prefix)
if test -x /opt/homebrew/bin/brew
eval (/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)
end
# Add personal executables without duplicating PATH entries
fish_add_path ~/bin
# A fish alias is a function-like shortcut
alias ll 'ls -lah'
fish’s fish_add_path command is preferable to manually concatenating a colon-separated PATH. It adds the directory in fish’s native form and avoids repeatedly appending the same directory when a new terminal starts.
Use conf.d for modular startup files
For example, create ~/.config/fish/conf.d/ai.fish for AI-specific settings:
mkdir -p ~/.config/fish/conf.d
touch ~/.config/fish/conf.d/ai.fish
Keep only fish syntax in these files. Bash and zsh forms such as export NAME=value and NAME=value are not fish assignment syntax. In fish, use set, fish_add_path, if, and alias as shown above.

Install Ollama with its current macOS download or the documented installation method, then launch ollama. Its setup flow lets you use models on the Mac or sign in for the cloud workflow; the exact model catalog and availability can change, so use the choices shown by the current application.
- Install the macOS application using Ollama’s current download instructions.
- From fish, launch the client with:
ollama
- Complete the first-run setup. Choose a local model when you want processing to remain on the Mac, or sign in when you want the cloud workflow.
- Test the installation with the model or command presented by the current Ollama quickstart. If fish says
Unknown command, inspect the executable location withtype -a ollamaand restart Terminal after installing the app.
Local operation avoids sending prompts to a hosted service, but response speed depends on the computer’s hardware. Cloud operation shifts inference away from the Mac and requires the sign-in step. Ollama also documents connections from desktop applications and coding-agent launch workflows, so it can be more than an interactive prompt in a terminal.

Authentication uses the OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable. For a persistent fish variable, use fish’s universal-variable syntax:
set -Ux OPENAI_API_KEY 'your-key'
Replace the example value with your real key and then start a new fish session or continue in the current one. Universal variables persist for your user across fish sessions, so you do not need to repeat the command for every terminal.
Because a key typed directly into a command can remain in shell history, a safer interactive approach is to enter it silently and then save the variable:
read -s OPENAI_API_KEY
set -Ux OPENAI_API_KEY $OPENAI_API_KEY
Do not commit a file containing the key, paste it into a repository, or place it in a shared config.fish. If a project needs a different credential, set it only in that project’s controlled environment and remove or rotate it when it is no longer needed.
What is the difference between Ollama and the OpenAI CLI?
Both can be launched from fish, but they solve different deployment problems. Ollama gives you a local-or-cloud model runtime, while the OpenAI CLI is a terminal client whose inference happens through the OpenAI API.
| Decision point | Ollama | OpenAI CLI |
|---|---|---|
| Execution location | Models can run locally on the Mac or through Ollama’s cloud workflow. | Requests are sent to the OpenAI API. |
| Hardware dependence | Local response speed depends on the Mac’s hardware; cloud use moves inference off the Mac. | Local model hardware is not the inference bottleneck because the API performs the model work remotely. |
| Authentication | Cloud use requires signing in through Ollama’s setup flow; local use follows the local runtime setup. | Set OPENAI_API_KEY in the environment. |
| Integration style | Supports desktop-app connections and documented coding-agent launch workflows as well as terminal use. | Designed to use the OpenAI API directly from a terminal. |
| Maintenance | Application and Homebrew-managed versions, model names, and cloud availability can change. | The CLI package and its command behavior can change; recheck the current documentation when upgrading. |
Choose Ollama when local execution, an Ollama-compatible desktop integration, or a choice between local and cloud operation matters. Choose the OpenAI CLI when your workflow is specifically an OpenAI API call from scripts or the terminal. Installing both is reasonable: keep their credentials and model workflows separate, then select the client per task.

How can I check that fish, Homebrew, and the AI clients are connected?
Run these checks in order. Each command tests a different layer, so stop at the first failure instead of changing several files at once.
- Confirm fish:
status --current-command. It should identify the current fish command context. - Confirm Homebrew:
type -q brew; and brew --version. A failure here means the Homebrew prefix orbrew shellenvsetup is wrong. - Confirm the PATH entries:
echo $PATHandtype -a fish. Look for the directory that contains the executable you intend to run. - Confirm Ollama discovery:
type -a ollama. If nothing is returned, restart Terminal after installing the macOS application and check the application’s documented command-line setup. - Confirm the OpenAI CLI discovery:
type -a openai. If Homebrew installed it but fish cannot find it, repair the Homebrew environment before reinstalling the package. - Confirm the API variable without printing its value:
set -q OPENAI_API_KEY; and echo 'OPENAI_API_KEY is set'. This checks existence without exposing the secret on screen.
What should I do when a fish AI setup fails?
brew: command not found
Use the Homebrew prefix printed by the installer and run its brew shellenv command in the current fish session. Then place the same guarded setup in config.fish so new sessions inherit it. If the prefix in your file does not exist, correct it rather than adding unrelated directories.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →ollama: command not found
Check whether the macOS application installation completed, restart Terminal, and run type -a ollama. A successful Homebrew check does not prove that the Ollama command-line component is available; they are separate installations.
The OpenAI CLI is found but authentication fails
Check only whether the variable exists with set -q OPENAI_API_KEY; do not print the key. If it is absent or stale, set a new universal variable, then verify that the key is valid in the account and environment where the API request is made.
fish reports a syntax error while starting
Temporarily move the newest file out of ~/.config/fish/conf.d/ or comment out the newest block in config.fish, start a clean fish session, and reintroduce the lines one at a time. Convert shell-specific assignments and exports to fish’s set syntax rather than copying a bash or zsh snippet unchanged.
A command works once but disappears in a new terminal
The setting was probably entered only in the current process. Put the PATH change or variable in config.fish, a file under conf.d/, or a universal variable when persistence is appropriate, then open a new terminal to test the startup path.

How should I maintain this setup?
Homebrew-managed packages, Ollama model names, cloud availability, and CLI behavior are volatile. Before relying on a command in a script or team guide, check the current documentation and confirm the installed version with the tool’s own version or help output.

- Keep Homebrew’s post-install environment block intact and avoid adding duplicate PATH lines by hand.
- Review fish startup files after each change; a single invalid line can affect every new terminal.
- Update Ollama through its current macOS distribution or the Homebrew method you selected, and revisit the model list after updates.
- Rotate an API key if it is ever pasted into a committed file, shared transcript, or public issue.
- When moving to another Mac, copy configuration deliberately rather than copying secrets with it.
What is a sensible daily workflow?
Start a fresh fish session and confirm the tools you need with type -a. Use Ollama when the task calls for a local model or its cloud workflow, and use the OpenAI CLI when the task is an API-oriented terminal command. Keep reusable aliases and PATH additions in fish configuration, but keep credentials out of source control and out of shared configuration files.
This arrangement leaves the shell, package manager, runtime, and API client loosely coupled. You can replace one layer—such as changing the model runtime—without rewriting the fish setup that launches the rest of your command-line tools.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep zsh as my login shell and still use fish for AI tools?
Yes. Launch fish from Terminal whenever you want the fish environment; changing the macOS login shell is optional. This approach gives you a safe fallback while you validate your configuration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I use a different API key for one project without changing my global fish variable?
Start a fish session in that project and assign a session-scoped value with set OPENAI_API_KEY 'project-key' instead of set -Ux. The value disappears when that fish process exits, leaving your universal variable unchanged.
Why does a GUI-installed command not appear in an already-open terminal?
Applications often install files after the shell has already built its PATH. Open a new Terminal window, reload fish, and then run type -a; if it is still missing, follow the application’s documented command-line setup rather than guessing a directory.
Can fish read my existing bash aliases automatically?
No. fish uses different syntax and does not interpret bash alias definitions as fish commands. Recreate the shortcuts with fish’s alias syntax or functions in your fish configuration.
