A Facebook Messenger AI chatbot for a Nepal e-commerce store can aim to send its first useful reply within two seconds by acknowledging Meta’s webhook immediately, queueing the event, and handling classification and catalog work asynchronously. The two-second figure is an engineering target—not a Meta guarantee—and it should be measured from webhook receipt to the first outbound message. The design also needs to accommodate mobile connections, Romanized Nepali, address confirmation, cash on delivery, and verified eSewa payments.
What does a “two-second reply” actually mean?
Define the target as the time from receiving a Messenger webhook event to making the first outbound Send API call—not the time to finish an entire conversation, verify a payment, or resolve a complex order. A short acknowledgement can arrive quickly while the bot continues gathering details or fetching a product card.
This distinction matters because Meta retries webhooks that are not acknowledged promptly, while AI inference and external lookups can take longer than the acknowledgement path should. The architecture should return HTTP 200 quickly, then work on the customer’s request outside that request-response cycle. The first message should be useful, even if brief; it can say the bot is checking a product or ask one concrete follow-up question, then deliver details in a subsequent message.

How should the Messenger webhook and reply path work?
Use a public HTTPS webhook for Meta Messenger events. Verify the request signature, acknowledge valid events immediately with HTTP 200, and enqueue them for asynchronous processing. This lets Meta receive its acknowledgement without waiting for intent classification, AI generation, a catalog query, or an order-system response.
- Receive and validate. Accept the webhook over HTTPS, parse the event safely, and verify its signature before trusting the event contents. Reject invalid requests rather than allowing them to enter the order or payment workflow.
- Acknowledge promptly. Return HTTP 200 after validation and enqueueing rather than waiting for the full bot response. Keep signature verification and parsing under a 100 ms engineering budget.
- Deduplicate and enqueue. Record the event ID or another idempotency key so a retry cannot create a second order or send duplicate processing actions. Store enough conversation state server-side to resume consistently after reconnects or retries.
- Run a fast path. Check cached product, stock, delivery-zone, and COD-policy data; handle deterministic FAQs where possible; and classify other requests asynchronously. A cache lookup and deterministic FAQ response have a 300 ms target in the practical latency budget.
- Send the first useful response. Use the Send API with the customer’s recipient PSID. Keep the initial message short and actionable; follow with a product card, delivery details, or payment instructions as the relevant result becomes available.
Meta’s Messenger API documentation requires a Page access token and the pages_messaging permission. The flow also needs a Facebook Page, an app, a configured HTTPS webhook, and a recipient PSID. A person must have messaged the Page within the standard 24-hour messaging window or otherwise agreed to receive messages outside that window. Check current Meta account requirements and country availability rather than assuming an integration or message type is available in every account.
Use Messenger capabilities according to the job: text for a short acknowledgement, quick replies for a small set of choices, attachments for product or other visual information, and templates where an approved structured format is appropriate. Sender actions such as mark_seen and typing_on can be sent promptly; send typing_off with the first answer. These indicators make the interaction feel responsive, but the measured two-second result should be the first actual outbound answer, not an indicator alone.

| Stage | Target budget | Design implication |
|---|---|---|
| Signature verification and parsing | Under 100 ms | Validate and extract only what is needed before acknowledging. |
| Cache lookup and deterministic FAQ response | Under 300 ms | Serve frequent, stable questions without making the first reply depend on a slow model or catalog system. |
| Queue and network overhead | Under 500 ms | Keep the acknowledgement and worker handoff lightweight; track delays rather than treating the queue as free. |
| First outbound Send API call | Inside the two-second target | Measure the complete webhook-receipt-to-first-send interval, including any processing and network wait. |
The named stage budgets do not add up to the entire two seconds; that is intentional. The remaining time is a buffer for scheduling, service variation, and the outbound request. Do not spend that buffer casually on work that can follow the first reply. In particular, a product database, language model, address-resolution step, or payment check should not hold up the webhook acknowledgement.
Measure p50 and p95 latency from webhook receipt to first outbound send. The median shows typical performance; p95 exposes the slower tail that customers experience during busy periods or dependency delays. Keep separate timings for acknowledgement and first reply so a fast HTTP 200 cannot conceal a slow customer response. Also track Send API errors, duplicate events, payment mismatches, and human-handoff rate.
How should the bot handle Nepali, English, and Romanized Nepali?
Support Nepali script, English, and Romanized Nepali as real input variants, rather than assuming customers will use one standardized spelling. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration reported in its 2026 market guide that almost 60 percent of Nepalis have internet access and more than 95 percent of internet users access it through mobile phones. The guide also describes online activity as concentrated in Kathmandu and a half-dozen other cities.
Build intent examples around the ways customers ask practical shopping questions, including “price kati ho,” “COD ma advance dina parcha,” delivery timing, return policy, and stock availability. Romanized Nepali can vary in spelling and word order, so assess the bot by whether it identifies the customer’s intent across actual variants, not just whether it recognizes a canonical phrase. When confidence is low or the request is ambiguous, ask a short clarifying question or route to a person instead of guessing about stock, price, or policy.

Keep messages and media lightweight for mobile users on variable connections. Avoid making a large image or a multi-part explanation the only way to get an answer. A concise text response can establish what the customer needs while product imagery or a fuller explanation follows if useful.
How should address capture and cash on delivery work?
Use a guided address flow and a confirmation step. The International Trade Administration’s 2026 market guide notes that delivery often requires calling customers for directions and that cash payment at delivery remains common. A city name or a map pin alone may not give a delivery team enough practical information.
- Ask for the municipality or city and ward.
- Collect a nearby landmark or directions that help a delivery person find the location.
- Collect the customer’s phone number for delivery coordination.
- Repeat the address details back to the customer and ask for confirmation before finalizing the order.
Do not silently turn an unclear address into a confirmed one. Escalate ambiguous directions, complaints, and high-value orders to a human. That avoids allowing a fast automated reply to create an order that the store cannot reliably deliver.
For COD, state any advance amount and the cancellation policy before the customer confirms. Then send a structured confirmation showing the item, quantity, total, delivery fee, address, and callback number. This gives the customer a clear chance to catch a mistaken item, amount, or location before the order is treated as ready for fulfillment.

How can the bot verify eSewa payment safely?
Use eSewa’s hosted or redirected payment step rather than treating a Messenger conversation as the settlement system. eSewa’s developer documentation describes ePay as enabling partner merchants to transact and receive money from customers with an eSewa account in a secure environment.
- Create or associate the payment attempt with the store’s order, and send the customer into the hosted or redirected payment flow.
- When a response arrives, validate its signature before treating the payment result as trustworthy.
- Reconcile the transaction UUID and amount against the expected order. A valid response for a different amount or transaction is not confirmation of the order being paid.
- If no response arrives within five minutes, call the status-check API and reconcile the result before changing the order’s payment state.
- Keep the order status and payment status distinct enough that an unresolved or mismatched transaction can be reviewed rather than incorrectly marked paid.
A payment screenshot sent in Messenger can be a lead for a staff member to review, but it is not authoritative evidence of settlement. The bot should not mark an order paid on the basis of an image or a customer’s claim when the signed response and transaction reconciliation have not confirmed it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you keep orders safe when events are retried or services fail?
Design for repeated events and partial failures instead of assuming each message is processed exactly once. Use event IDs or idempotency keys so retries cannot create duplicate orders; keep conversation state on the server so a reconnect does not reset a customer’s progress.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPut queue retries behind backoff, and route events that repeatedly fail into dead-letter handling for review rather than retrying forever. Circuit breakers can prevent a failing catalog, order, or payment dependency from consuming the entire response budget. If a dependency is unavailable, send a truthful short response or hand the case to a person instead of inventing a stock result or payment confirmation.

Cache product price, stock, delivery zones, and COD policy to serve common questions quickly, but invalidate those entries when catalog or order changes make them stale. Speed is not useful if the bot returns a fast but outdated price or availability result. Log enough structured information to investigate failures without putting unnecessary customer details or payment secrets into model prompts.
Protect the integration with HTTPS, signature validation, rate limiting, secret rotation, and least-privilege tokens. Pass a model only the minimum fields needed to classify intent or draft a response; keep payment secrets and unnecessary customer data outside prompts. Separate transactional order updates from promotional campaigns. Marketing messages need opt-in and opt-out handling and remain subject to Meta’s messaging rules.
What should you test before relying on the two-second target?
Test the whole path under realistic message patterns and dependency delays, not just the webhook handler in isolation. A quick acknowledgement proves that the endpoint returned promptly; it does not show that a customer got a useful reply, that an order was created only once, or that a payment was reconciled correctly.
- Latency: Record p50 and p95 webhook-to-first-send times and separate webhook acknowledgement timing from the first customer-facing reply.
- Duplicate safety: Replay or retry events and confirm that the same message cannot create duplicate orders or conflicting state changes.
- Language coverage: Check intent accuracy for Nepali script, English, and varied Romanized Nepali phrases about price, COD advances, delivery, returns, and stock.
- Catalog freshness: Change a price or stock value and verify cached responses update after catalog or order changes.
- Payment reconciliation: Confirm that signature validation, UUID matching, amount checks, delayed-response status checks, and mismatch handling work as intended.
- Order completion: Check whether customers complete COD orders, cancel, or require a person to resolve an address or complaint; do not optimize response speed at the expense of a deliverable order.
- Policy compliance: Confirm the Page token,
pages_messagingpermission, recipient eligibility, messaging-window handling, and promotional opt-in and opt-out behavior in the current Meta account.
Use the results to decide where the next improvement belongs. A weak p95 may point to a slow downstream dependency even when median latency looks healthy; a high handoff rate may indicate language coverage or address ambiguity; payment mismatches require reconciliation fixes, not faster generated text. Treat a vendor’s two-second statement or implementation example as a hypothesis to validate with your own load and failure tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a typing indicator count as the chatbot’s first reply?
No. A seen receipt or typing indicator signals activity, but it does not give the customer an answer. Define the response metric around the first outbound message containing useful content.
Can the two-second target guarantee that every customer issue is resolved in two seconds?
No. It is a target for the first outbound send, not a completion deadline for a product lookup, address clarification, or payment review. Measure the later steps separately if they matter to store operations.
What should the bot do when it cannot tell whether an eSewa payment matches the order?
Leave the payment unresolved and route it for verification rather than marking the order paid. A screenshot may help staff investigate, but the transaction response and its order details must be reconciled.
