Build a balanced CS2 team by giving five players clear primary responsibilities and practicing how those responsibilities connect—not by chasing five high kill totals or a supposedly perfect role formula. A useful lineup has someone organizing calls, players creating and converting space, someone who can make the AWP affect important areas, and a defensive plan for holding sites and rotating. These are starting points for scrim trials, not a proven guarantee of wins.

What makes CS2 roles complementary?

A role is a responsibility in a round, not a scoreboard label. Complementary players make each other’s actions useful: an entry creates an opportunity, a teammate supports or trades that move, and the in-game leader (IGL) keeps the action connected to the round plan. On the Counter-Terrorist (CT) side, the team also needs to know who holds positions and who rotates.

There is no established winning five-player formula. A 2025 CS2 role-classification study describes different behavioral profiles, including entrying, trading, opening, clutching, sniping, and utility use. Its authors report distinct regions of behavior rather than one universal player profile or a single numerical measure of role fit. Use role labels to discuss responsibilities, not to rank every player on one scale. The CS2 role-classification study

Which roles should a five-player team cover?

These responsibilities can overlap. Assign each player a primary job, then agree on where they can flex by map, side, or strategy. ESL’s 2023 guide describes five common roles; a University of Victoria CS:GO research document also identifies the anchor as a defensive responsibility. The categories are practical role models, not a requirement that every player fit one rigid identity.

Role Main responsibility What to review
IGL Communicate the plan, read the round, and adapt calls as the situation changes. Were calls clear and timely? Could teammates execute them?
Entry / opener Take first contact and try to create space or an opening for the team. Did the move create usable space or control, and could teammates trade or build on it?
Support / flex Enable teammates with utility, follow-up trades, and willingness to fill gaps. Did flashes or smokes help the play? Was a trade available when needed?
AWPer Use sniper positioning and engagements to influence important areas. Could the player affect relevant space, and did the team’s setup support that opportunity?
Lurker Use patience, timing, and independent positioning to gather information or apply pressure away from the main group. Did the timing connect to the team’s plan, or leave the player isolated from the round?
Anchor Hold a defensive position and help preserve the team’s CT-side structure. Was the position covered, and was the rotation plan clear when pressure shifted?

The role descriptions draw on ESL’s Counter-Strike role guide, the CS2 behavioral study, and the University of Victoria CS:GO role and movement analysis. The latter’s sample covered 680 LAN games, 18,338 rounds, 267 players, and 57 teams; those figures describe its dataset, not the success rate of a particular lineup.

How to assign roles to your players

  1. Start with observed behavior and team needs. Identify who communicates clearly under pressure, who is willing to take first contact, who can support or trade that contact, who can use the AWP effectively, and who is comfortable working independently. Do not assign jobs from kill totals alone.
  2. Give each player a primary responsibility. Agree on what a useful contribution looks like for that job. For example, an entry’s contribution may be creating space that the team can convert, even if the player does not survive the opening engagement.
  3. Define the handoffs for each map and side. Decide who flashes or trades for the entry, how the IGL communicates an execution, when the lurker reconnects or applies pressure, where the AWPer can influence space, and which CT player anchors each position. Make sure the plan states who rotates and what happens if a position is pressured.
  4. Practice a small set of plans and calls. Repeating a few map-specific sequences gives players a chance to learn shared timings and responsibilities. ESL’s guide recommends communicating plans, understanding roles, practicing, and staying willing to play other roles; it does not establish a required number of practice hours or a guaranteed result.
  5. Review rounds for both outcome and behavior. Ask whether the opening created space, whether teammates converted or traded it, whether utility helped, whether the call was executable, and whether defensive structure held. Behavioral measures such as opening, trading, sniping, and utility can guide review, but the CS2 study does not present them as a universal score or target.
  6. Adjust when repeated scrims show a mismatch. Keep enough continuity to learn the team’s timings and calls, while changing a role when evidence across rounds suggests a player or assignment is not working. Treat flexibility as planned coverage rather than changing everyone’s job every round.

How to judge whether the lineup is working

Look for connected actions, not isolated statistics. A high kill count does not by itself show whether an entry’s space was converted, a support player’s utility enabled a teammate, or a lurker’s timing helped the round. Conversely, a player can contribute to the plan without leading the scoreboard. Use role-specific review questions alongside whether the team actually converts rounds.

Keep conclusions proportional to the evidence. The 2025 CS2 study offers a way to describe different behavioral profiles; it does not establish that a particular role distribution raises win rate. A 2022 preprint analyzing professional CS:GO tournaments reported that individual and collective performance initially declined after team changes and then gradually recovered. That is historical context for team transitions, not proof that CS2 teams should avoid changes or that any particular role assignment causes the effect. The 2022 CS:GO team-change study
