A useful cosplay emergency repair kit is a compact set of supplies for quick fixes—not a portable workshop. Start with needles and thread, safety pins, a little tape, and a few small tools; then add fasteners, wig supplies, adhesives, or electronics items only if your costume needs them. Keep bulky or heat-producing tools in a hotel or car kit, and check whether your convention offers a repair station before relying on one.

What should I pack in a cosplay emergency repair kit?

Build the bag around the failures you could realistically fix while away from your room: a seam opening, a closure coming loose, a strap needing temporary support, or a small trim piece lifting. Adafruit’s minimal costume-repair inventory includes assorted safety pins, gaffer tape, zip ties, straight and curved needles, several small spools of thread, a pocket multi-tool, and black and silver permanent markers. Other convention and cosplay inventories add compact sewing tools, wig supplies, and costume-specific spares.

For most costumes, the best starting point is a small hand-sewing setup, safety pins, short lengths of tape, replacement fasteners, and a way to trim or remove failed stitches. Avoid trying to cover every imaginable failure with a large pile of supplies. A button, snap, or piece of trim that matches your costume is usually more useful than a generic extra of something it does not use.

A practical con-bag checklist

  • Sewing: Straight and curved hand-sewing needles, plus small amounts of black, white, neutral, and costume-matching thread.
  • Temporary closures: Assorted safety pins in several sizes. They can hold a closure or stabilize a tear while you decide whether a lasting repair is practical.
  • Trim and stitch tools: A seam ripper or small scissors for controlled trimming or removing a failed stitch. Keep cutting tools small and appropriate to the event’s rules.
  • Tape: A few feet of gaffer tape, pre-cut or wrapped around a small core. Adafruit identifies gaffer tape as a compact-kit option in preference to duct tape.
  • Fasteners and costume spares: A few zip ties, buttons, snaps, Velcro pieces, elastic, or trim that match the garment or prop you are actually bringing.
  • Touch-up supplies: Black and silver permanent markers, with costume-color markers only if a likely repair calls for them.
  • Optional temporary garment help: Fabric or fashion tape for a hem, closure, or garment positioning when a stitched repair is not the right immediate fix.

Keep quantities modest: the aim is a portable kit, not enough supplies to rebuild a costume. Adafruit also advises verifying that glues and markers are fresh and working; the same quick check is sensible for the other items you intend to rely on.

How should I divide supplies between my con bag and a base kit?

Separate the items you can carry and use quickly from supplies that are bulky, require setup, or are better suited to a stable work surface. A compact con-bag kit handles simple emergency repairs; a hotel, car, or shared base kit can hold more involved tools and replacements.

Con-bag layer

Pack the small sewing and fastening supplies, tape, trimming tool, and costume-specific spares. If the costume includes a wig, add the relevant pins and hair-control supplies. If it has lights or powered components, consider a small electronics kit—but only if you know what repair you can make and the event permits the tools. Adafruit lists an iron, solder, wire, and tape as optional electronics supplies for a more extensive kit, not as universal pocket items.

Hotel, car, or shared base kit

A larger base kit can hold a hot glue gun and sticks, cyanoacrylate (super glue), five-minute epoxy, toothpicks or other small applicators, a broader tape assortment, extra fasteners, fabric scraps, stain remover, and more extensive sewing supplies. Contact cement may also be relevant to some costume repairs. These are options, not a universal materials recipe: choose an adhesive for the specific materials involved, and account for heat, fumes, staining, skin contact, and venue restrictions. The cited convention inventories do not establish that any adhesive is appropriate for every fabric, foam, plastic, wig, or venue.

Keeping hot glue equipment, soldering tools, and larger cutting tools out of the everyday con-bag layer avoids treating workshop equipment as an all-purpose emergency supply. A base kit is also a better place for supplies that need setup or a more controlled work area.

How do I choose supplies for my costume’s likely failures?

Start with the costume, not a generic shopping list. Walk through its closures, seams, straps, trim, wig, props, armor, and powered parts, then pack only supplies that address a plausible small failure in one of those areas.

Likely repair Useful kit items What to consider
Loose seam or small tear Needle, matching thread, safety pins, seam ripper or small scissors Thread that blends with the costume is more discreet; a pin can be a temporary hold rather than a lasting repair.
Loose closure or strap Safety pins, spare button or snap, elastic, zip tie, or matching Velcro piece Carry the fastener type the costume actually uses; a generic substitute may not fit or look right.
Lifting trim or small component Matching trim or spare part; an appropriate adhesive in the base kit Adhesive choice depends on the materials and the repair. Check venue rules before using tools or glue.
Wig shift or styling issue Wig pins, bobby pins, and a small hair-control item Choose supplies based on the wig and style rather than assuming garment-repair items will solve a wig problem.
Minor surface mark or touch-up Black or silver permanent marker, or a costume-color marker Match the color to the specific finish; a marker is not a universal substitute for a material-appropriate repair.
Powered costume component Only the electronics tools and spare wire or tape appropriate to the planned repair Keep electronics tools optional and check event rules; a soldering iron is not a general con-bag item.

This problem-first approach helps balance speed, portability, and finish. A safety pin or tape may provide a quick temporary hold, while hand stitching takes longer but can produce a more concealed repair. Adhesives and tools introduce material-compatibility and venue considerations, so they belong in the kit only when there is a clear use for them.

What should I add if I’m wearing a cosplay wig?

Give a wig its own small repair path rather than expecting a sewing kit to cover it. Convention and cosplay inventories include wig pins, bobby pins, shears, hairspray, wig heads, blow dryers, and other wig-care supplies, but many of those items are more suited to a room or repair station than a small con bag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the portable layer, select wig pins, bobby pins, and a small hair-control item that fits the style you are wearing. A larger base kit may include styling supplies such as hairspray, shears, or a wig head if they are useful for your costume and permitted by the venue. Do not assume every wig problem can be fixed with glue or ordinary garment tape; suitability depends on the wig and the repair.

What should I check before using glue, tape, or tools?

Check compatibility and rules before the repair, especially when a supply could affect a visible finish, involve heat or fumes, or come into contact with skin. No single adhesive or marker is established as appropriate for all costume materials, and event policies can differ.

  • Match the supply to the material: Consider what the costume part is made from and whether the repair needs to be temporary, structural, or discreet. The base-kit inventory names several adhesives but does not make them interchangeable.
  • Consider the finish: Tape, marker, glue, and stitching can leave different visible results. Carry matching thread or trim when appearance matters, rather than assuming a fast fix will be invisible.
  • Check event restrictions: Review the convention’s current rules for sharp tools, heat-producing equipment, adhesives, and repair spaces. Matsuricon specifically advises asking a crew member before using unfamiliar tools or adhesives.
  • Use a suitable work area: Adhesives and hot tools are not convenient pocket fixes. Keep them in a base kit or use them at an authorized repair space when available.

Can a convention repair station replace my kit?

No. A repair station can be a useful backup, but its availability, hours, supplies, and procedures are event-specific. Bring the compact essentials you are comfortable carrying, and check the convention’s current website for whether a station exists and how it works.

Published event inventories illustrate what a station may offer, not what every convention will provide. Anime Expo lists sewing supplies, wig-styling supplies, several kinds of tape, more than ten types of glue, and clothing irons; its page says supplies are checked out through volunteers and returned after use. Anime Boston describes a free station with tape, glue, bobby pins, hairspray, stain removers, and scrap fabric. Matsuricon describes its room as complimentary and intended for light repairs, rather than costume construction. These are event-specific descriptions, not a guarantee of service at another convention or a future edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair stations should be treated as places for small fixes, not as a substitute for finishing or rebuilding a costume. If a repair requires a specific color, part, or tool, carrying that item yourself is more reliable than assuming the station has it.

What should I leave out of a universal emergency kit?

Do not make a hot glue gun, epoxy, soldering iron, hand saw, or large cutting tool a default con-bag item. Such tools are more appropriate to a base kit or an event repair space when needed, and they can bring setup, material, safety, or venue-rule considerations.

Also avoid overpacking generic substitutes. A full range of thread colors, every fastener type, or multiple adhesives adds bulk without guaranteeing that the right material will be on hand. The better rule is to pack a small foundation, then add only the color, closure, wig, prop, armor, trim, or electronics supplies tied to your costume.

How can I keep the kit ready for the next event?

Before packing, check that the supplies you plan to rely on are present and usable. Adafruit’s advice to verify that glues and markers are fresh and working is especially relevant to supplies that may sit unused between conventions. Review your costume-specific spares too: a replacement button or piece of trim is only useful if it still matches the costume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After an event, note which items were used or missing and replenish those rather than expanding the kit indiscriminately. If you plan to use a convention repair station next time, check that event’s current page for availability and procedures instead of relying on a previous convention’s inventory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a basic travel sewing kit enough for cosplay repairs?

It may cover a loose seam, but it may not include curved needles, suitable thread colors, wig pins, or the fasteners used by your costume. Check the kit’s contents against your costume before the event rather than assuming the label means it is complete.

Can I bring a soldering iron or hot glue gun into a convention?

Do not assume either is allowed. Check the event’s current rules or ask its staff; a tool that appears in a repair-room inventory is not necessarily permitted in an attendee’s bag or usable everywhere at the venue.

Should I repair a costume at the convention or wait until I get back to my room?

That depends on whether the fix is small, the right supplies are available, and the repair space permits the tools or materials involved. If a repair needs heat, adhesive curing, or a particular spare part, a room or base kit may be the more practical setting.
