Start with the new Pokémon you want to use, then build teammates around the situations it cannot handle. Check its type and available moves, cover important gaps without piling onto the same weaknesses, and make sure the moves work in the mode you play. For a concrete example, this guide uses Pokémon Legends: Z-A; the right roster depends on the game, the Pokémon you can obtain, and the battle mode.
What makes a Pokémon team balanced?
A balanced team is not simply six different types. It has useful answers to the threats and situations its members are likely to face, without leaving the whole lineup exposed to the same weaknesses. A teammate can help through its type, a move that covers a gap, or a different battle function. Treat type matchups as a starting point, not a checklist.
That distinction matters in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, where battles happen in real time. Nintendo says players must consider type matchups, opportunities to switch or use moves, how long moves take to execute, and each move’s area of effect. A move that looks like good coverage on a list may be less useful if it is difficult to land at the right moment or does not suit the encounter. Nintendo’s official game page describes these battle considerations.
How to build around a new Pokémon
- Make it the centerpiece. Confirm its type, evolution details, and the moves actually available in your game. Do not assume every game offers the same roster or move options.
- List what it struggles to handle. Use its type and moves as your first clues. Note threats, matchups, or battle situations for which it lacks a reliable answer.
- Find teammates that fill distinct gaps. Look for a different type, a useful move, or a contrasting battle function. Prefer options that improve coverage without duplicating a weakness across much of the team.
- Check the lineup as a whole. Look for repeated vulnerabilities as well as missing answers. If two teammates seem equally helpful, compare how their moves work in battle, how readily you can switch to them, and whether they suit your intended mode.
- Revisit the build as it develops. New moves or an evolution can change what the centerpiece contributes. Train and adjust rather than treating the first version of the team as final.
- Try it in the mode you intend to play. Use the problems you encounter to decide what to change; do not assume a lineup suited to the story will serve every mode equally well.
These are decision-making steps, not a published Nintendo formula or a guarantee of a top-performing team. Nintendo’s official pages establish selected game mechanics, not one universally optimal lineup.

How to choose among possible teammates
Compare candidates on the factors that affect your actual battles. There is no need to score them with an invented points system; the useful choice depends on your centerpiece and mode.
| What to compare | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Type matchups | Does this teammate help with a weakness or threat the centerpiece does not answer, and does it add a vulnerability the rest of the lineup cannot cover? |
| Move coverage | Can its available moves handle situations the centerpiece struggles with? |
| Move use in Z-A | Can you use the move effectively given its execution time, area of effect, and opportunities to switch? |
| Battle mode | Does the teammate suit the story and Royale, or the timed multiplayer Battle Club? |
| Development requirements | Does the plan rely on evolution or Mega Evolution, and can you meet the relevant requirements? |
What changes if you are starting with a Z-A partner?
The named starter partners in Pokémon Legends: Z-A are Chikorita (Grass), Tepig (Fire), and Totodile (Water), according to Nintendo’s official game page. The cited official information does not establish a universally best starter. Choose the one you want to use, then apply the same gap-checking process; a starter’s type alone is not enough to prescribe the rest of a team.

How to account for story, Royale, and Battle Club
Story and Z-A Royale preparation
During the adventure, battles against wild Pokémon provide experience. The official Pokémon adventure guidance says experience raises levels and stats, and can teach moves or enable evolution. It also recommends daytime preparation for the Royale, including battling wild Pokémon and stocking useful battle items. Use those opportunities to strengthen the team and revise it as its moves and evolutions change. See “Making the Most of Your Adventure”.
Mega Evolution
Mega Evolution requires the Pokémon to hold its Mega Stone. Some Mega-Evolved Pokémon may change type, so judge the Mega-Evolved form—not only the ordinary form—when reviewing team coverage and weaknesses. Nintendo’s Mega Evolution overview and the official adventure guidance explain these points.

Timed multiplayer Battle Club
The Z-A Battle Club is a timed mode for up to four players in which defeats earn points. Mega Power orbs and temporary stat boosts may appear, and move areas or targeting patterns can matter when several opponents are involved. That makes move use and positioning relevant alongside type coverage; do not assume a team built for the story will fit this mode unchanged. Details are on the official Z-A Battle Club page.

Competitive team guidance for Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Regulation Set H concerns that specific format. It may offer a useful habit—reviewing a team after play and considering possible changes—but its rules and mechanics do not establish current Pokémon Legends: Z-A roster or strategy advice. Check the game and mode you are actually playing before applying a recommendation.
