Sign in with the Microsoft account password—not the Windows Hello PIN; if the account is passwordless, Microsoft notes that Remote Desktop may still require a password.
Keep Network Level Authentication (NLA) enabled where possible. Disabling a PIN is not generally required; troubleshoot password-based sign-in and Windows Hello settings instead.
Check the host PC and network requirements
- On the host PC, open Start > Settings > System > About. Under Windows specifications, check Edition. Windows 11 Home cannot host incoming Remote Desktop connections; use Windows 11 Pro or another supported host edition.
- Make sure the host is powered on, connected to the network, and reachable by the client. Windows normally enables the required firewall rules when Remote Desktop is enabled.
- If the client is outside the host’s network, arrange network access through a VPN or correctly configured port forwarding. Enabling Remote Desktop alone does not make a private PC reachable from the public Internet.

Enable Remote Desktop and allow the account
- On the host, open Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- Turn Remote Desktop on and select Confirm if prompted. Note the PC name; you will enter it on the client.
- In the same settings page, select Select users that can remotely access this PC or, on some Windows releases, Remote Desktop users. Administrators can connect by default. If the Microsoft-account user is not an administrator, select Add, enter the user name, and select OK.
Microsoft’s instructions for allowing Remote Desktop access cover these settings. Keep NLA enabled unless you have confirmed that an older client does not support it; update the client first if possible.

Check Microsoft account password sign-in
At the RDP credential prompt, use the Microsoft account password associated with the account, not the Windows Hello PIN. The PIN is specific to a device and is not a substitute for the account password.
- If your Microsoft account is passwordless, review Microsoft’s passwordless-account guidance. Remote Desktop is among the Windows features that may still require a password.
- On the host, check Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. If Only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device is enabled, password sign-in for the Microsoft account is disabled on that device. Availability of this setting varies by device configuration.
- If needed, turn off passwordless sign-in or the Windows Hello-only setting so password-based authentication is available, and make sure you know the account password. You do not need to remove the PIN simply to use RDP.

Connect from another Windows PC
- On the client, search for Remote Desktop Connection in the taskbar and open the app. The client PC can run Windows Home or Pro.
- Enter the host’s PC name or IP address and select Connect.
- When prompted, enter the Microsoft account credentials and select OK. Use the account password, not the Windows Hello PIN.
Microsoft’s current consumer instructions identify the account by its email address but do not prescribe one universal username-format string for the RDP prompt. Follow the prompt and use the account credentials rather than assuming a particular format.
Connect from another device
Windows is not the only supported client platform. Microsoft’s current instructions say to use Windows App on macOS and iOS, and the Remote Desktop app on Android. Add the host PC name in the client app and select the PC to connect; enter the Microsoft account password if prompted.

Troubleshooting connection failures
- Authentication fails: Confirm that you entered the Microsoft account password rather than the PIN, that password sign-in is available, and that the account is allowed to access the host.
- The client cannot find or reach the PC: Check that the host is on and connected, verify its PC name or IP address, and check network and firewall access. For connections from outside the local network, use a VPN or configured port forwarding.
- An older client cannot connect with NLA enabled: Update the client if possible. Disabling NLA may be a temporary compatibility measure, but NLA is recommended for most environments.
FAQ
Can Windows 11 Home accept an incoming RDP connection?
No. Windows 11 Home can be used as a Remote Desktop client, but it cannot host incoming Remote Desktop connections. The host needs Windows 11 Pro or another supported edition.
Can I use my Windows Hello PIN to sign in over RDP?
No. The PIN is a device-specific Windows Hello credential. Use the Microsoft account password for password-based RDP authentication.

Do I need to remove my PIN before connecting?
Not generally. A PIN is not the RDP password, but having one does not by itself mean you must remove it. Check that password sign-in is available and use the Microsoft account password.
Should I disable Network Level Authentication?
Usually not. NLA is recommended for most environments. Consider disabling it only as a temporary compatibility measure if an older client does not support NLA, and update the client if possible.

Can I connect from outside my home or office network?
Yes, if the client has network access to the host, such as through a VPN or configured port forwarding. Simply enabling Remote Desktop does not make the host reachable over the public Internet.
