Use two separate layers to protect a child on Nintendo Switch. In the child’s supervised Nintendo Account, turn on Spending Restrictions and Age-Based Content Restrictions to control eShop purchases and which listings are visible. On the Switch console (or in the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app), configure Restricted Software and Communicating with Others to limit game launches and in-game chat.
These controls do different jobs: console settings generally apply to every player on that Switch, while eShop purchase and listing controls follow the selected supervised account. A complete setup also needs checks for free downloads, redeemed codes, the Nintendo Switch App on a phone, and—on Switch 2—GameChat.
What is the difference between Nintendo Account controls and Switch console controls?
Account controls govern transactions and eShop visibility; console controls govern software access and communication. Setting only the console’s parental controls does not stop a child from making eShop purchases on a linked account.

Nintendo’s support guidance is explicit: “Only a parent/guardian Nintendo Account in a Nintendo family group can set Nintendo eShop purchase restrictions.” A child’s console PIN cannot replace that account-level setting.

How do I stop a child from buying games on Nintendo Switch?
Apply Spending Restrictions to the child’s supervised Nintendo Account in a browser. The console’s Restricted Software setting is not a purchase block, and a PIN on the Switch alone does not disable eShop checkout for every account.
Before you start
- Have a parent or guardian Nintendo Account.
- Place the child’s account in your Nintendo family group as a supervised account.
- Make sure the child signs in with that account rather than another adult or unsupervised profile.
- Use a browser; the account restriction is managed separately from the console’s parental-control PIN.
Nintendo does not enable child-account restrictions automatically. Confirm the family-group relationship before changing settings. An older existing account can be invited into the family group and made supervised before you apply eShop restrictions.
Browser steps
- Sign in to the parent or guardian Nintendo Account.
- Open Family group.
- Select the supervised child’s account.
- Turn on Spending Restrictions.
- Turn on Age-Based Content Restrictions if you also want to limit eShop listings by age.
- Choose Save changes.
Spending Restrictions disable purchases and auto-renewal options on Switch, Switch 2 and Nintendo Store, including physical orders. Age-Based Content Restrictions limit what the supervised account can see in the eShop; they do not by themselves stop a game from launching if it is already installed or otherwise available on the console.
What this purchase block does not cover
Do not promise a total download blockade. Nintendo states that account restrictions do not prevent downloading free software or demos, and they do not stop a user from redeeming software codes. A prepaid-card balance may also be added even when spending that balance on restricted purchases is blocked. Check the child’s account and the console separately if you need to control those paths.
The setting follows the selected supervised account. If another family member uses an unrestricted account on the same Switch, that account’s purchasing ability is not changed by the child’s restriction.
How do I hide age-inappropriate games in the Nintendo eShop?
Use Age-Based Content Restrictions on the supervised Nintendo Account. This controls eShop listing visibility; it is different from Restricted Software, which controls whether age-rated software can be started on the console.

In the same browser path—Family group > child’s supervised account—enable Age-Based Content Restrictions, then save. Nintendo uses the player’s age and regional rating information to limit listings. U.S. accounts use ESRB classifications; other regions use their local rating system.
Listing visibility is not a universal content filter. It cannot guarantee that every theme, user-created item, advertisement or conversation inside an otherwise permitted game is suitable. It also does not remove software that was previously downloaded, physically owned or redeemed with a code. Pair the account setting with the console’s Restricted Software control.
How do I block mature games from launching on a Switch?
Set Restricted Software on the Switch or in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Console restrictions are usually system-wide, so configure a shared Switch for its youngest regular player.
Set it directly on an original Nintendo Switch
- Open HOME > System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings.
- At the prompt to use the phone app, press X to continue without pairing the app.
- Choose Restriction Level.
- Select a preset or choose Custom Settings.
- Set and confirm a parental-control PIN that the child does not know.
The console’s preset labels and rating thresholds are region-specific. For a U.S. ESRB setup, Nintendo describes the presets as follows:
Recommended Free Tools
| Preset | Games restricted | Communication |
|---|---|---|
| Teen | Mature-rated games | Communication remains unrestricted |
| Pre-Teen | Teen- and Mature-rated games | Communication is restricted |
| Child | Everyone 10+, Teen and Mature-rated games | Communication is restricted |
The Teen preset is an important trap: it blocks Mature software but leaves communication unrestricted. If chat is the concern, choose Pre-Teen, Child or Custom Settings instead of assuming the Teen label includes a communication block.
Use Custom Settings when a preset is too broad
Select Custom Settings when you want different choices for game ratings and communication. Configure:
- Restricted Software — choose the highest age rating the child may play.
- Software Rating Organization — select the rating body used for your region, such as ESRB in the United States.
- Communicating with Others — restrict open communication, including supported chat features and messages.
An ESRB restriction is not a guarantee that every interaction inside a permitted title is filtered. Game-specific systems, user-generated content and services outside Nintendo’s controls may have their own settings.

How do I turn off chat and messaging on Nintendo Switch?
Enable Communicating with Others restrictions in the console’s parental-control settings. This is the setting intended to limit open communication, chat features and messages in supported games and services.
- Open HOME > System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings.
- Choose Restriction Level, then Custom Settings if you need separate control over ratings and communication.
- Open Communicating with Others.
- Turn the restriction on and confirm your parental-control PIN.
On a U.S. console, choosing Pre-Teen or Child also restricts communication, while Teen does not. If the child can still communicate in a particular game, check whether that title uses a separate service, voice application or account system, and inspect any allowed-game exception in the parental-controls app.
The Switch communication restriction does not control the separate Nintendo Switch App installed on a smartphone. A child can still use that phone app unless you manage the phone’s app permissions, account access and device-level communication settings separately.
Should I use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls phone app?
The free app is optional for the core purchase, rating and chat restrictions, but it adds easier monitoring, play-time controls and exception management. You can configure the original Switch from its own System Settings without a phone.
What the app adds
- Daily play-time limits and bedtime schedules.
- Play-activity information.
- Remote adjustment of the console’s restriction level.
- Visibility of an Allow List or game-specific exceptions.
Nintendo says allowed games can run without the software-restriction PIN, although play-time limits still apply. Review the allow list after setup so an exception does not undermine the rule you intended. Keep the parental PIN private; anyone who knows it can change or bypass the console settings.
What the app does not replace
The app does not replace browser-based Spending Restrictions and Age-Based Content Restrictions on the supervised Nintendo Account. Set those account controls even if the app is paired. Conversely, setting eShop restrictions does not configure communication or game-launch limits on the console.
Do Nintendo Switch parental controls apply to every profile?
Most console restrictions are system-wide, while eShop restrictions are account-specific. Nintendo warns that a shared Switch should generally be configured with its youngest player in mind.

Restricted Software and Communicating with Others are console-level controls. They can affect adults and older children using the same hardware, not only the profile that prompted setup. The app’s play-time limit is also console-wide. If adults need unrestricted access, consider using a separate console or accept that the restriction will apply whenever it is enabled.
Spending Restrictions and Age-Based Content Restrictions attach to the selected supervised Nintendo Account. They do not automatically carry over to another profile in the family group. Verify which account is active before testing the eShop or changing settings.
Why can a child still download something after I blocked purchases?
Free software, demos and redeemed codes are not wholly stopped by Spending Restrictions. The purchase block targets paid transactions and auto-renewal options; it is not a blanket download filter.
Review the console’s Restricted Software setting to prevent an age-rated title from launching. Check the child’s account for redeemed codes, and remember that a prepaid-card balance may be added even when restricted purchases using that balance are blocked. If the concern is a specific free game, use its age rating in Restricted Software and review any communication settings inside the title.
How should I configure a shared family Switch?
Start with the youngest regular player, then document any exceptions for older users. Console-level limits affect everyone on the hardware, so a setting that is appropriate for a child may also restrict a parent’s profile.
- Set up each child with an individual Nintendo Account in the family group; do not rely on a shared profile.
- Apply Spending Restrictions and Age-Based Content Restrictions to each supervised account that needs them.
- On the Switch, choose Custom Settings if the family needs a precise combination of game ratings and communication limits.
- Review the Allow List in the phone app and remove games that should require the PIN.
- Write down the parental-control PIN in a secure password manager or other private location.
- Recheck settings after a system update, a family-group change or the addition of a new communication app.
For an older child’s existing Nintendo Account, invite it into the family group and complete the supervised-account setup before expecting account-level eShop controls to appear.

In that app, a parent can approve particular friends and video-chat requests. Nintendo’s Switch 2 documentation also states that the general Communicating with Others restriction does not apply to GameChat. Therefore, configure the ordinary console communication setting for supported original-Switch-style features, then separately review GameChat approvals and requests in the app.
This is a conditional Switch 2 step, not a replacement for the account-level purchase controls. Spending Restrictions and Age-Based Content Restrictions still belong to the supervised Nintendo Account.
What are the main limitations parents should know?
No single switch blocks every route to content or contact. A dependable setup accounts for these boundaries:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Purchases versus downloads: Spending Restrictions target paid purchases and auto-renewals, but free downloads, demos and redeemed codes can still be available.
- Listings versus launches: Age-Based Content Restrictions limit eShop visibility; Restricted Software controls launching age-rated games.
- Console versus account: Console controls generally affect all users of the Switch, while eShop restrictions follow one supervised account.
- Game chat versus phone chat: The console setting does not restrict the Nintendo Switch App on a smartphone.
- Preset gaps: The U.S. Teen preset restricts Mature games but leaves communication unrestricted.
- Exceptions: An Allow List entry can let a game run without the software-restriction PIN, although play-time limits still apply.
- In-game material: Rating controls do not guarantee a universal filter for user-generated content, advertisements or every conversation inside a permitted game.
How do I troubleshoot a restriction that is not working?
Identify whether the failure is account-level, console-level or outside Nintendo’s controls before changing settings. Use this checklist:
- A purchase still succeeds: Confirm you changed the child’s supervised account under Family group, saved the change and are not testing with an unrestricted adult account.
- An eShop listing is visible: Check Age-Based Content Restrictions and the account’s age/region information. Listing visibility is separate from game-launch restrictions.
- A mature game launches: Revisit Restricted Software, verify the correct rating organization and inspect the app’s Allow List for an exception.
- Chat still works: Ensure Communicating with Others is enabled as a restriction. The Teen preset does not restrict communication. Check whether the child is using the Nintendo Switch App on a phone or a separate voice service.
- A Switch 2 user can use GameChat: Review GameChat approvals and video-chat requests in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app; the general communication restriction does not apply to GameChat.
- The child bypasses the setting: Change the parental PIN and keep it private. Also check whether another profile or device is being used.
If a menu label differs, consult Nintendo’s regional support instructions for the console’s current system software. Rating organizations, feature availability and labels can differ by country.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I block Nintendo Switch purchases without deleting the child’s account?
Yes. Add the account to a Nintendo family group as a supervised account and enable Spending Restrictions from the parent or guardian account. The child keeps the account, saves and eligible software while paid purchases and auto-renewal options are disabled for that account.
Will parental controls stop a child from using a game bought on another account?
Not necessarily. Console-level Restricted Software rules determine whether software can launch on that hardware, but account purchase restrictions do not revoke licenses held by another account. Set the appropriate rating limit on the console and keep the parental PIN private.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I allow one multiplayer game but block chat in it?
Use Custom Settings to permit the game’s rating while enabling Communicating with Others restrictions. Some titles or external services may provide separate voice or messaging features, so review the game’s own account and privacy menus as well.
Do Nintendo Switch parental controls work when the console is offline?
The PIN-based console restrictions remain on the hardware, but account changes made in a browser or app require the console to receive updated information. Reconnect the Switch before assuming a newly changed family-group setting has taken effect.
How do I remove a Nintendo Switch parental-control PIN I forgot?
Use Nintendo’s official PIN-reset or inquiry process for your region rather than guessing repeatedly. You will need the information Nintendo requests to verify the console or account; avoid third-party reset tools.
