Back up your PS5 before installing a system software update. The safest preparation is to synchronize saved data to PlayStation Plus cloud storage if you subscribe, then create a separate USB console backup on a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive. The USB backup can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and settings; cloud storage is primarily for saved data. Do not use a USB drive already configured as PS5 extended storage: that drive cannot store a PS5 console backup. After the backup reports Backup complete, update through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update.
Why should you back up before a PS5 system software update?
Most updates install normally, but a failed update can leave you needing to reinstall PS5 system software. Sony states that reinstalling the system software deletes all data on the console. A completed backup gives you a recovery option if that happens, while a cloud synchronization provides a second copy of your saved games when PlayStation Plus is available.
The risk is not limited to save files. A PS5 console backup can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings. That makes a USB backup useful when you want to recover the console’s broader state, not merely continue a game. Cloud storage has a narrower purpose: protecting saved data.

What are the differences between a USB backup and PlayStation Plus cloud storage?
Use both when possible. They protect different categories of data and have different recovery behavior.
| Consideration | USB PS5 console backup | PlayStation Plus cloud storage |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Works without a subscription, provided you have a compatible USB drive. | Requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription. |
| What it covers | Can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings. You choose the categories during backup. | Focuses on saved data. It is not a replacement for a full console backup of settings and media. |
| Storage format | Requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. | Uses Sony’s online cloud storage rather than a USB device. |
| Recovery behavior | Restoring a console backup erases all data currently saved on the PS5, so you must review the restore selection carefully. | Cloud-saved data can be synchronized back to the console without restoring a complete console image. |
| Best use | A broad pre-update safety copy, especially when you need settings, media, games or apps as well as saves. | An additional copy of current game saves and an automatic way to keep them synchronized. |
A cloud copy and a USB copy are complementary rather than interchangeable. If you do not have PlayStation Plus, the USB procedure is the independent backup option described below.
How do I synchronize PS5 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage?
PlayStation Plus can synchronize saved data automatically when a game closes or when the console enters rest mode, after the required cloud-storage settings are enabled. Let the synchronization finish before starting the system software update.
Enable the required cloud settings
- Open the PS5 settings for saved-data and cloud-storage synchronization.
- Enable the options that allow saved data to synchronize automatically when games close and when the console enters rest mode.
- Leave the console connected to the internet and signed in to the PlayStation account that owns the saves.
The exact synchronization timing depends on the game closing or the console entering rest mode; automatic sync is not a substitute for checking that your latest progress has actually uploaded. If a game is still running, close it and allow the console time to complete the sync before you proceed.
What cloud storage does not protect
Cloud storage is aimed at saved data. It does not provide the same broad category coverage as a USB PS5 console backup, so it should not be your only preparation if you also need screenshots, video clips, settings, games or apps protected before the update.

What do I need for a USB PS5 backup?
Prepare a separate USB drive that the PS5 can use for console backups. Sony’s guidance supports drives formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The drive must have enough free space for the data categories you select; the console will indicate whether the backup can proceed.
- A USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- A PS5 with its current data intact and enough time to restart and complete the backup.
- Optional PlayStation Plus access if you also want a cloud copy.
- A recent trophy synchronization. Trophies are not included in a PS5 console backup, so update your game status before you create the backup.
Keep the backup drive available until you have seen the completion message. Do not unplug it merely because the console has restarted; the process is finished only when the PS5 reports Backup complete.
Can I use my PS5 extended-storage drive for a backup?
No. A USB drive configured as PS5 extended storage for game data uses a different format and cannot be used to save PS5 backup data. The storage distinction is functional, not just a matter of selecting a different folder.
Use a separate FAT32- or exFAT-compatible USB drive for the backup. If you are considering repurposing an existing extended-storage drive, first protect any games or other data you still need; do not assume that an extended-storage drive can be switched to backup use without changing how it is formatted.
How do I create a complete PS5 USB backup before updating?
Follow this sequence while the console is operating normally. The backup procedure restarts the PS5, so close games and finish any other work first.

- Synchronize trophies. Update the game status so your latest trophy progress is recorded before the backup. Trophies are excluded from the USB console backup.
- Prepare the correct drive. Connect a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Do not use a drive currently configured as PS5 extended storage.
- Open the backup menu. On the PS5, go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Select categories. Choose the data categories you want in the backup. Sony identifies four broad categories: games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings. Selecting more categories requires more space and can increase the time required.
- Continue to the confirmation screen. Select Next and review the categories and destination shown by the console.
- Start the backup. Select Back Up. The PS5 restarts and writes the selected data to the USB drive.
- Wait for completion. Leave the console powered on and the drive connected. Sony warns:
Don’t turn off your PS5 console while backing up or restoring data.
- Verify the result. Continue only after the PS5 displays Backup complete. If the process stops before that message, treat the backup as incomplete rather than relying on a partially written copy.
Which categories should I select?
Select at least saved data if your immediate concern is game progress. For a broader recovery after a serious update failure, include settings and any screenshots or video clips you cannot replace. Include games and apps when you want the console backup to cover those installations as well; otherwise, you can select only the categories that fit your available drive space.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because trophies are not part of the backup, synchronizing them beforehand is a separate required action. The backup protects the categories you select, not every piece of account activity associated with the console.
How do I install the system software update after the backup?
Once the USB backup is complete and any PlayStation Plus synchronization has finished, install the update through the PS5’s system software menu.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select System Software.
- Select System Software Update.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and allow the update to finish without interrupting power.
Keep the USB backup drive safely connected or stored according to your own backup plan, but do not remove it during the backup process itself. The update is a separate operation that should begin only after the completion message has appeared.
What happens if the update fails and I must reinstall PS5 system software?
A system software reinstallation deletes all data on the PS5. That is the situation the completed USB backup and cloud synchronization are intended to address. If reinstallation becomes necessary, do not assume that a previously connected extended-storage drive is a valid recovery backup; the console backup must be on the FAT32- or exFAT-formatted backup drive.

After the console is running a compatible system software version, use the PS5’s Back Up and Restore area to select the restore function and the USB backup you created. Read the restore selection carefully before confirming: restoring a backup erases all data currently saved on the console.
What are the rules for restoring a PS5 USB backup?
Sony requires the system software version at restore to be the same as or newer than the version installed when the backup was made. A restore can therefore be blocked if the console is running an older system software version than the one associated with the backup.
Before you confirm a restore
- Confirm that the USB drive is the one containing the completed PS5 backup.
- Check the console’s current system software version and update it if it is older than the version used when the backup was created.
- Copy or synchronize any new data created after the backup, because the restore removes data currently on the console.
- Read the categories and confirmation warning on screen before proceeding.
During the restore
Do not turn off the PS5 or disconnect the USB drive while the restore is running. Sony’s warning applies to both backup and restore operations because an interruption can cause data loss or corruption or damage the console or USB drive.

The drive is not offered as a backup destination
Check the format first. A PS5 backup drive must be FAT32 or exFAT. If the drive is configured as PS5 extended storage for games, it cannot be used for console backup; switch to a separate compatible drive instead.

You cannot find your newest game progress after an update
Check whether the game was closed and allowed to synchronize before the update. PlayStation Plus automatic synchronization occurs when a game closes or the console enters rest mode only after the required settings are enabled. If you relied on USB, confirm that saved data was one of the categories selected in the backup.
Trophies are absent from the USB backup
This is expected: Sony excludes trophies from a PS5 console backup. Update the game status and synchronize trophy progress before making the backup so that trophy information is recorded separately from the USB copy.
The restore option warns that current data will be erased
Stop and review the console’s current data before confirming. A PS5 backup restore replaces the console’s current state and erases data currently saved on it; preserve anything created after the backup through cloud synchronization or another safe copy first.

- Wait through the restart until Backup complete appears.
- Only then open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and install the update.
- Keep the USB drive in a safe place in case the update fails and a reinstall or restore is required.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much free space should a USB drive have for a PS5 backup?
Sony’s procedure does not specify one universal capacity because the amount depends on the categories you select and the data stored on your console. Choose a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive with more free space than the selected categories require, and let the PS5 confirm that the backup can proceed.
Should I use cloud storage and a USB backup at the same time?
Yes, when PlayStation Plus is available. Cloud storage gives you an online copy of saved data, while the USB console backup can also preserve settings, media, games and apps, so a failure in one copy does not remove the other.
How often should I make a PS5 USB backup?
There is no single interval that fits every player. Make one before major system software changes and whenever losing your recent saves, settings or media would be difficult to reproduce; use automatic cloud synchronization between full USB backups when you have PlayStation Plus.
Can a PS5 restore merge a backup with newer files already on the console?
No merge should be assumed. Sony warns that restoring a backup erases data currently saved on the console, so protect newer files first and review the restore confirmation before accepting it.
