Use Steam Cloud for supported game files, but keep a separate manual copy of saves, screenshots, and important settings you cannot afford to lose. On Steam Deck, you can make that copy in Desktop Mode using a microSD card or compatible connected storage. The important limitation is that save-file locations and Cloud coverage vary by game, so verify what you copied—and restore it with Steam and the game closed.
This approach answers the practical questions most owners have: where saves are stored, whether Steam Cloud includes screenshots, how to move a copy to an SD card, and what to do when local and Cloud versions disagree. Treat Cloud as synchronization and your manual copy as an independent recovery point.
What should a Steam Deck backup include?
A useful backup contains the files you would actually need to recover: supported game saves, configuration files you care about, and screenshots. These are not necessarily stored together. Steam Cloud only covers files a game developer has chosen to synchronize, while saves outside Cloud and other files require a manual copy.

Keep a separate copy of Steam client settings if those matter to you; the Steam client settings area in the Linux userdata tree uses app ID 7.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Saves: Find the actual save location for each game. Some are in Steam’s userdata tree; others are stored elsewhere, according to the developer.
- Screenshots: Locate them through Steam’s screenshot manager or the file manager. There is no single officially documented screenshot folder that applies to every game and capture method.
- Settings: Decide whether you mean game configuration or Steam client settings. Back up the relevant files rather than assuming every setting is included with a save.
Steam Cloud is synchronization, not a guarantee that every item on the Deck is backed up. Valve says it can store game settings, saves, profile statistics, and other user-specific data, but developers choose which files are included. Valve also notes that many games do not use Steam Cloud for save games.
Include the account in your backup notes, not just the game title. Two Steam accounts on one Deck have separate local saves and settings, and a folder called only “backup” is easy to misapply later. A label such as SteamDeck-Backup/account-name/game-name makes the intended restore target clear.
Before considering a copy complete, open a few files from the destination. A save may be present but incomplete if it was copied while the game was writing; an image should open normally in the file manager. Keep the original files untouched until the destination has been checked.
Is Steam Cloud enough to protect Steam Deck saves?
Not by itself. Cloud synchronization is convenient for files that a game supports, but it cannot protect files that the game does not upload, and it can be disabled globally or for an individual game.
Before relying on Cloud, check both the general client setting and the game’s own setting. In Steam’s client settings, confirm that Cloud synchronization for supported applications is enabled. Then open that game’s Properties and check its Cloud Synchronization setting. A Steam Cloud indicator on a store page is a useful clue, not proof that every save or configuration file is included.
For a current supported save to have a chance to upload, let the game exit normally while the Deck is online and give Steam time to synchronize. If Steam reports a failed sync, resolve that before launching the game again. Valve warns that ignoring a failed synchronization can lead to conflicts and potentially lost progress.
Cloud and manual copies serve different purposes. Cloud is useful for supported files and synchronization between devices; a manual copy gives you an offline recovery copy and can include files outside Cloud. If a game does not use Steam Cloud for saves, a manual copy is the practical recovery route.
Do not assume that a successful Cloud status means your screenshots were uploaded. Developers choose the files included in a game’s Cloud package, and the official guidance does not promise screenshot coverage. Keep image files in your own copy when they matter.
Cloud conflicts are not automatically errors in the files themselves. They mean Steam found different local and Cloud versions after changes occurred in two places without synchronization. The safe response is to stop, compare the versions and their modification times, and choose the copy that contains the progress you want instead of clicking through blindly.
Where are Steam Deck save files stored?
Steam’s default Linux userdata base is ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata, but it is not a universal home for every game’s saves. The developer determines a game’s actual save location, so check the game’s documentation or support information when the expected userdata folder does not contain it.
In Desktop Mode, open the file manager and navigate to the Steam userdata location. Account folders contain app-ID folders; identify the account and game before copying. Do not assume that a folder with an unfamiliar name is disposable or that a particular game’s save is present just because its app-ID folder exists.

Steam accounts on the same Deck keep separate local saves and settings. If more than one person uses the device, make the account identity part of the backup folder name. Otherwise, it is easy to restore the wrong account’s files or mistakenly treat one account’s copy as another’s progress.
If a save is not where expected, avoid copying an entire unrelated directory into a guessed location. Consult the game’s documentation or support forum to identify the save path. Valve says a developer may be needed to determine a game’s save location.
The userdata path is a starting point, not a promise that every relevant file sits directly under one obvious folder. A game may keep its save in a different location chosen by its developer, while its Steam client information remains elsewhere. Record the exact path you used for each game in your backup notes so a later restore does not depend on memory.
When searching manually, distinguish the account folder from the app-ID folder beneath it. Preserve that relationship in the backup rather than flattening files into one common directory. This is especially important when you have more than one account or several games with similarly named configuration files.
How do I back up saves, screenshots, and settings?
Use Desktop Mode to locate files and copy them to a microSD card or compatible connected storage. Prepare the destination first, then make a clearly labeled copy while the game is closed so you do not capture files in the middle of a save operation.
1. Check Cloud status and close the game
While online, confirm that Cloud synchronization is enabled where supported and check the game’s Properties. Exit the game normally and allow Steam to complete its sync attempt. If a sync failure appears, do not proceed as though the Cloud copy is current: resolve the status before starting the game again or deciding which version to preserve.
Closing normally matters because a game can still be writing a save when its window disappears or the Deck is suspended. Wait for Steam’s synchronization indicator to settle before beginning the manual copy. If you are making a backup specifically to preserve a known good state, do not launch the game again until the copy is finished.
2. Switch to Desktop Mode
From Gaming Mode, choose Steam > Power > Switch to Desktop. Valve describes Desktop Mode as a normal PC-like environment where file management and desktop applications can run. Open the file manager there to inspect the userdata tree and your selected backup destination.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Desktop Mode is also where you can create folders, inspect file dates and confirm that copied images open. You do not need to move the game installation itself to make a save backup; copy only the saves, screenshots and settings you have identified.
3. Prepare removable storage, if using it
Valve supports any UHS-I (class 3 or better) microSD card. To prepare a card, use Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card. Formatting erases the card, so use a blank card or move files you want to keep before formatting. A compatible connected external storage device is another option for a local copy; Valve documents connected storage generally, but does not endorse a particular drive model.
Formatting is a preparation step, not a backup step. If the card already contains games, photos or another backup, copy those files elsewhere first. After formatting, create a dedicated backup folder instead of scattering save files across the card; that makes later verification and restoration less error-prone.

4. Create an account- and game-labeled folder
In the file manager, create a structure such as SteamDeck-Backup/<account>/<game>/. Use a recognizable account label and game title. The angle-bracket terms are examples of labels to replace, not literal folder names. A clear folder structure makes it easier to restore the intended files and keeps separate accounts from being mixed together.

The note is useful when a developer’s save location is outside userdata or when you later have both an older and newer manual copy.
5. Copy the files and verify the copy
Start with the game’s files in ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata, but also check the game’s documented save location if the files are not there. Copy the saves and any configuration files you want to preserve. For Steam client settings, the relevant userdata app ID is 7; do not confuse that with a game’s own app-ID folder.
For screenshots, open Steam’s screenshot manager or search relevant game and userdata locations in the file manager. Because the official guidance does not establish one universal screenshot path across games and capture methods, verify the specific images rather than relying on a guessed folder. Open a few copied images from the backup device to confirm that the copy worked.
Keep the original files in place during backup. A copy is safer than moving files: if the destination is wrong or the backup is incomplete, the Deck’s originals remain available. Once you have verified the destination, eject removable storage safely through the desktop environment before removing it.

If you are copying several games, finish and verify one game’s folder before moving to the next. Keep each game’s files together with its account label, and do not overwrite an existing backup unless you intentionally want to replace that recovery point.
How do I move Steam Deck saves to an SD card?
Format a supported UHS-I class 3 or better microSD card through Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card, then switch to Desktop Mode and copy the selected save folders into a labeled directory on the card. The card is simply the destination for a manual copy; it does not make every game use the card’s files automatically.
When you need the files again, connect the card, close Steam and the game, and copy the backup into the corresponding original location while preserving the account and app-ID structure. Keep the card as a separate recovery copy until the restored game has been tested. If the card contains other data, remember that the format operation erases it, so prepare it only after moving anything you want to keep.
How do I restore a Steam Deck save without overwriting the wrong progress?
Close the game and Steam before replacing files. Restore the backed-up files to their corresponding original locations, preserving the correct account and app-ID structure. Then reopen Steam, allow its Cloud check to finish, and decide deliberately which version should be used if a conflict appears.
1. Identify the copy you want to keep
Before copying anything back, confirm which account and game the backup belongs to. If both a local save and a Cloud version exist, compare their modification times and choose the one that represents the progress you want. A newer timestamp can help identify a recent copy, but the right choice is the version with the desired progress.
If you have more than one manual copy, keep the older one until the newer restore has been tested. That gives you a fallback if the restored game opens with an unexpected state or if you selected the wrong account.

2. Close Steam and the game
Do not restore over files while the game or Steam is open. Close the game, exit Steam, and use the file manager in Desktop Mode to copy the backup into the corresponding save or settings location. Keeping the account and app-ID folder structure intact reduces the risk of placing a valid save under the wrong account or game.
If you are replacing an existing local file, make a temporary copy of that current file first. It gives you a way back if the Cloud prompt or your progress check shows that the local version was the one you actually wanted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Let Steam check Cloud and handle any conflict
Reopen Steam and wait for its Cloud check before launching the game. If Steam reports that local and Cloud files differ, compare the timestamps and select the copy containing the progress you want. The conflict means the versions changed in two places without synchronizing; blindly continuing after a failed sync can result in lost data.
Do not launch the game just to see which version appears while a conflict is unresolved. Make the selection first, then launch and verify the expected save, profile statistics or settings. If the result is wrong, close the game and restore the preserved copy rather than repeatedly switching versions without a known backup.
4. Restore screenshots and settings separately
Copy screenshots to the location from which they were backed up, and verify that they open from the Deck. Restore configuration or client settings only when you have identified their original locations. A save restore does not automatically imply that screenshots or every setting have also been recovered.
For a game that never uses Steam Cloud, the manual copy is the recovery path. Valve says Steam Support cannot recover lost saves. If the game’s save location is unclear, consult the developer rather than guessing at a destination.

Which backup method should I use?
Choose based on what you need to preserve and how you expect to recover it. Cloud synchronization is least labor-intensive for supported files; removable and connected storage give you a separate manual copy but require file discovery and periodic updates.
| Method | Best for | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Cloud | Convenient synchronization of files a game supports across devices. | Coverage is game-dependent; Cloud can be disabled, and failed syncs or conflicts need attention. |
| MicroSD manual copy | An offline, removable copy made directly from the Deck. | Requires Desktop Mode, preparing the card, and locating each game’s files. |
| Connected external storage | A second local copy when you have compatible connected-storage hardware. | Requires compatible hardware and manual file management; Valve does not endorse a particular drive model. |
| Third-party cloud-save tools | Optional tools that can target arbitrary files and multiple providers. | Outside Valve’s built-in support. Confirm what files the tool handles and understand its behavior before relying on it. |
A microSD card is convenient when you want a removable, offline copy that can stay with the Deck. Connected storage can provide another local destination when you already have compatible hardware. Neither option removes the need to identify each game’s files, and Valve does not specify a particular drive model.
Third-party cloud-save software may target arbitrary folders and multiple providers, but it is outside Valve’s built-in support. Treat it as optional: verify exactly which files it handles and keep an independent copy before trusting it with your only recovery point.
For the broadest practical protection, use Cloud for games that support it and keep a manual copy of important files that you have verified. Neither method removes the need to identify the correct account and game when restoring.

Frequently asked questions
Does Steam Cloud back up screenshots?
Do not count on it. Valve says developers choose which user-specific files a game synchronizes, and the official guidance does not establish one screenshot path or promise screenshot coverage. Use Steam’s screenshot manager or the file manager to locate images and copy them manually when they matter.
Can I back up saves without entering Desktop Mode?
The dependable manual workflow uses Desktop Mode because it provides the file manager needed to locate and copy game-specific files. Steam Cloud can synchronize supported files in Gaming Mode, but it does not replace a manual copy for files outside Cloud.
What if Steam shows a Cloud conflict after I restore?
Leave the game closed, compare the local and Cloud modification times, and choose the version containing the progress you want. A conflict means files changed in two places without synchronizing. Do not continue blindly after a failed sync, because that can result in lost progress.
Does Steam Cloud keep older versions of my save files?
The cited Valve guidance explains synchronization and conflict handling, but does not establish a general save-file version history or a guaranteed rollback feature. Keep a manual copy if you need a recovery point independent of the current Cloud and local versions.
Can I restore a Steam Deck backup after changing Steam accounts?
The backup needs to be matched to the account whose local files you intend to restore; accounts on one Deck keep separate local saves and settings. If the backup’s account label is unclear, identify its origin before copying it into another account’s folders.
Will Steam Support recover a save that was never backed up?
Valve says Steam Support cannot recover lost saves. For a title with no usable Cloud copy or manual backup, the game’s developer may be the best source for information about its save location or recovery options.
Can I use an external drive instead of a microSD card?
Yes, compatible connected storage can hold a manual copy. Valve documents connected storage generally but does not endorse a particular drive model. The same rules apply: close Steam and the game, label the account and game, preserve the original path, and verify the copied files.
