Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To back up browser data on Linux, first identify the active profile or user-data directory, close the browser completely, and copy that directory to a separate location. To restore, close the browser again and put the backed-up data into the correct profile location. Firefox has a documented manual restore process and a built-in Backup tool; for Chromium-based browsers, confirm the active directory and package-specific path before replacing anything.
What a browser backup contains—and what it does not guarantee
Your browser program and your personal browser data are separate. A Firefox profile holds personal information such as bookmarks, passwords, and extensions. Chromium’s user-data directory contains profile data such as history, bookmarks, and cookies, as well as local installation state. Copying the right data directory is therefore different from reinstalling the browser.
Before you begin, list the items you need to recover: bookmarks, saved passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, cookies, or other site data. The exact contents available through a profile copy or account sync vary, so do not assume one method preserves every item. Saved passwords deserve a separate check, particularly when moving Chromium data between Linux accounts or machines.
Find the active browser profile before copying
Firefox
If Firefox opens, go to Help → More Troubleshooting Information and find the Profile Folder or Profile Directory field. Use the directory shown there rather than assuming the default is active. Mozilla’s Firefox Source Docs identify ~/.mozilla/firefox as the default Linux profile root and ~/.cache/mozilla/firefox as the default profile-local cache location. Profile selection can also depend on profiles.ini, startup arguments, and environment variables; some Snap installations retain legacy behavior. See Mozilla’s Profiles Service documentation.

If Firefox will not open, use Mozilla’s profile discovery instructions rather than treating the default directory as certain.
Chromium and Chromium-based browsers
Identify the user-data directory actually used by your installed browser. In Chromium, individual profiles—often including a directory named Default—sit inside the user-data directory. On Linux, the directory can be overridden with the --user-data-dir command-line flag or the CHROME_USER_DATA_DIR environment variable; the command-line flag takes precedence if both are set. See The Chromium Project’s user-data directory documentation.

Do not assume a single path covers every distribution package, branded browser, Flatpak, Snap, or custom launcher. Check the active installation’s configuration before copying or replacing files. The Chromium documentation describes the directory structure and overrides, but it is not a universal, package-by-package Linux path list.
Make a local backup
- Quit the browser fully. Close every window and make sure the browser is no longer running. Mozilla explicitly instructs users to close Firefox before copying its profile.
- Copy the complete active profile or user-data directory. Save it somewhere separate from the working copy, such as a USB stick. For Firefox, Mozilla documents copying the profile folder to another location; keep the directory structure intact.
- Label the copy clearly. Include the browser, profile, date, and machine or user context in the backup folder’s name so it is not confused with another profile.
- Check the copy before relying on it. Confirm that the copied folder exists and contains files, then leave the original untouched until you have checked that the browser still opens. This is a cautious spot-check, not a formal integrity test; Mozilla does not specify a universal checksum or validation procedure.
Mozilla’s manual Firefox instructions are at Manually back up and restore Firefox profile data (updated May 1, 2026; desktop instructions cover Windows, macOS, and Linux).

Restore Firefox data
Use Mozilla’s built-in Firefox Backup tool for most ordinary moves to a new computer; Mozilla says, “For most users, the Firefox Backup tool is easier and recommended.” A manual profile copy is useful when troubleshooting, recovering from corruption, or restoring selected data.
Replace an existing profile folder
- Quit Firefox completely.
- Locate the profile directory you intend to restore into and move or rename its current contents as a precaution.
- Copy the backup into the profile location. If replacing a folder, Mozilla says the backed-up profile folder’s name must match exactly, including its random eight-character part.
- Start Firefox and check the data you intended to recover.
Restore into a newly created profile
- Use Firefox Profile Manager to create a new profile, or use the profile Firefox created on a newly installed system.
- Open the backed-up profile folder and copy its contents into the new profile directory, overwriting same-named files when prompted.
- Start Firefox and verify the restored items.
Whole-profile moves are not always portable across operating systems because file paths and browser versions can differ. For a move from Linux to Windows, Mozilla notes that copying only specific data files, such as bookmarks or password files, may be necessary rather than transplanting the entire profile. Treat that as a separate migration, not a guaranteed folder replacement.

Restore or move Chromium data carefully
The Chromium documentation establishes how its user-data directory is organized and how Linux launchers can override it, but it does not provide a complete consumer restore recipe for every Linux browser package. First confirm the active user-data directory and the profile within it. Then close the browser before replacing or copying files, and verify that the destination belongs to the same browser installation and user account.
After the move, check saved passwords separately. Chromium on Linux can use GNOME Libsecret, KWallet 4, KWallet 5, KWallet 6, or plain-text storage; the selected backend depends on the desktop environment. The available documentation does not guarantee that saved credentials will remain accessible after moving a profile between accounts, machines, or keyrings. See The Chromium Project’s Linux Password Storage documentation.

Local copies, browser backup tools, and sync are different
A local profile copy gives you a separate copy of the data directory, while a browser backup workflow or account sync follows that product’s supported transfer and selection rules. For Firefox, Mozilla recommends the built-in Backup tool for most users, especially when moving to a new device; manual copying remains an option for troubleshooting or targeted recovery.
Chrome sync is account-based, not the same as keeping an offline copy. Google lists bookmarks, passwords, extensions, web apps, and settings among the data that signed-in users can choose to save to a Google Account. History and tabs require the relevant setting. When signed out, bookmarks and other information remain only on the device unless saved to the account. Details are in Google Chrome Help’s sync instructions.
If Chrome uses an optional sync passphrase, you need it on new and already signed-in devices. Google says some account features become unavailable with a passphrase, and changing it deletes passphrase-encrypted data from Google’s servers and signs devices out. Do not change or reset it casually; follow Google’s current account instructions and its password export/import guidance if you need another recovery route.
