Back up a digital game while it is still downloadable, but do not confuse a file copy with ownership. A backup can preserve installers, installed data, saves, settings, maps, and mods. It cannot recreate a deleted account, satisfy a missing license check, bypass digital-rights management (DRM), replace a required launcher, or bring back a game’s shut-down online servers.
The safest plan is to identify every account and service the game uses, save the game files and personal data separately, record proof of purchase and recovery details, and test a restore before the original installation disappears. The exact method depends on whether the game is managed by Steam, supplied as an independent installer by GOG, or tied to a console account on PlayStation or Nintendo.
What a backup preserves—and what it cannot
A digital purchase has two separate parts: the data needed to install the game and the entitlement that authorizes you to run it. Your backup preserves the first part. The store account, license record, launcher authentication, third-party DRM, and online services control the second.
Recommended Free Tools
Files a good backup can preserve
- Game installation files or downloadable installers.
- Save games, profiles, screenshots, configuration files, maps, mods, and other custom content when you copy them separately.
- Patch files or offline installers that the publisher provides.
- Receipts, product keys, account-recovery information, and notes about which launcher or DRM service the game uses.
Access a backup cannot guarantee
- A store or launcher may still require the account that bought the game.
- DRM may perform an online or periodic authorization check.
- A subscription may be required even when the game files remain on your drive.
- Multiplayer, cloud saves, leaderboards, or other features may fail if the publisher’s servers are closed.
- Deleting the purchasing account can permanently remove the entitlement even though a local copy remains.
For that reason, copying a game folder is useful preparation, not a way to turn a licensed game into an unrestricted one. Treat every backup as a combination of files plus the account and licensing records needed to use those files.

Prepare before a game is delisted or an account becomes inaccessible
- Map the game’s dependencies. Write down the store, launcher, purchasing account, publisher account, third-party DRM, subscription, and online services involved. A game bought from one store can still require a separate publisher login.
- Download while the title is available. Do not wait for a delisting announcement or an account dispute. A title can disappear from a storefront before you have another opportunity to download it.
- Save personal data separately. Copy save, configuration, map, mod, and custom-content folders in addition to the platform’s game backup. Their locations vary by game and operating system, so check the game’s own support documentation and confirm which profile is active.
- Keep purchase evidence. Preserve receipts, transaction IDs, product keys, the account email address, previous login names, and recovery codes in a secure location. These details can help support verify ownership.
- Use two storage locations. Keep one copy on an external USB SSD or hard drive and another in a separate physical location. A single drive is not a backup if it fails, is lost, or is encrypted by malware.
- Test before deleting anything. Restore the backup to another folder or machine when practical. Steam explicitly recommends testing its backup so an incomplete or corrupt copy is found while the original installation still works.
Platform comparison
| Platform | Can you retain ordinary installer or game files? | Account or launcher authorization | Are saves and custom files included automatically? | Online-service dependence | Recovery path if access is lost | Important post-delisting limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Steam’s Backup game files tool preserves compatible Steam-managed installations. | Steam account ownership and, where applicable, third-party DRM or a publisher account remain necessary. | Not necessarily. Steam warns that saves, maps, configurations, and other custom files may be outside the backup. | Required for some DRM, multiplayer, cloud, or publisher services. | Check the correct account, purchase history, filters, and Hidden Games; contact Steam Support with ownership proof if the account was hijacked. | The backup does not bypass licensing, and games using unsupported third-party installers or downloaders may not work with the tool. |
| GOG | Yes. Purchased items are supplied as self-executable installer files that you can archive. | GOG Galaxy is optional for installation, play, and management, but a particular game may have its own DRM or online requirement. | Not guaranteed; copy saves and custom content separately. | Depends on the title’s multiplayer, DRM, and other services. | Use the purchasing account and retain account and purchase records. | An offline installer preserves the files, not a closed server or a separate DRM authorization. |
| PlayStation | Console storage can retain installed data, but it is not an independent installer archive that replaces licensing. | The account that bought the game, console activation or Console Sharing settings, and license checks control reinstalling. | Use the platform’s save-management options or the game’s supported backup method; do not assume a copied game folder contains saves. | Subscriptions and online services can affect access and multiplayer. | Sign into the purchasing account, check transaction history and subscription status, restore licenses, then redownload; verify primary-console or Console Sharing settings when relevant. | A copied console folder cannot substitute for an account and license check. |
| Nintendo | Console game data can be redownloaded when the account and console are authorized; it is not a license-free archive. | Purchases are tied to the Nintendo Account that made them, and access depends on which console can load that account’s virtual game cards. | Handle save data separately using Nintendo’s supported console and cloud options where available. | Online play and some features depend on Nintendo services and any required subscription. | Use the purchasing Nintendo Account and ensure the console is authorized to load its virtual game cards. | Reinstalling still requires the correct account and console authorization after a delisting. |
Back up and restore a Steam game
Create the Steam backup
Steam’s built-in tool is intended for games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. Steam states: “Only games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam are compatible with this tool.” Games that use separate third-party installers or downloaders may not be compatible.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files.
- Choose a destination with enough free space and create the backup.
- When it finishes, copy the resulting backup to a second drive or other separate location.
The backup is tied to Steam’s installation process. It is not a portable, DRM-free copy that can be launched independently of the account. Record the game’s store account and any publisher or DRM account alongside the files.
Copy saves and custom content separately
Steam warns that saves, maps, configurations, and other custom files may sit outside the backup. Before removing the original installation, identify and copy every folder the game uses for:
- Local saves and profiles.
- Graphics, control, and accessibility settings.
- Downloaded maps, scenarios, or user-created content.
- Mods and mod-manager data.
- Screenshots or photo-mode captures you want to retain.
Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for a local copy. A cloud conflict, an overwritten save, or loss of account access can remove the only synchronized version. Keep the copied folders with a note identifying the game version and the account or Windows user profile that created them.
Restore a Steam backup
- Install Steam on the replacement computer or reinstall it on the existing one.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns the game.
- Open Steam’s backup-and-restore function and choose Restore Game Backup….
- Select the backup location and follow the prompts.
- After installation, launch the game and confirm that the expected saves, settings, and downloadable content are present.
- If personal files were copied separately, restore them to the game’s required locations only after confirming the game starts correctly.
Steam recommends testing a backup after creating it. Its guidance explains that testing ensures you will not need to redownload the game later. A test restore is especially valuable before you uninstall the original or move the only working copy to another drive.

When a Steam game disappears from your library
A missing library entry is often an account-selection problem rather than a delisting. Work through the account checks before deleting files or buying the game again.
Check the account and purchase record
- Sign out and identify every Steam account you have used.
- Use Steam’s account lookup and recovery process to locate the account associated with the purchase.
- Check the account’s purchase history for the game or its original transaction.
- Inspect library filters, including Hidden Games, and clear search or category filters that could conceal the title.
- Confirm that the game was purchased or activated on this account rather than shared by another household member.
A delisting normally affects new purchases and store visibility; it does not, by itself, prove that an existing entitlement vanished. The account’s purchase history is the stronger evidence of ownership.

If the account was hijacked
Use Steam Support’s account-recovery process rather than creating a replacement account. Gather previous login names, email addresses, transaction details, product keys if applicable, and other proof of ownership. Support can use that information to verify the account and help restore access.
Do not delete the account as a troubleshooting step. Steam states: “If you delete your Steam account, game licenses, community profile, gifts, inventory items, wallet funds, and other associated information will be deleted permanently and will not be recoverable.” A local backup cannot restore those licenses.
Keep an offline installer archive with GOG
GOG provides the most straightforward file-preservation workflow covered here. Its support information says you can download purchased items as many times as you want, without a limit on the number of downloads. The downloads are self-executable installer files, and the Galaxy app is optional: it is not required to install, play, or manage the games.

Download and organize the installers
- Sign in to the GOG account that owns the game.
- Download every installer component the title requires, including language packs or separately listed add-ons.
- Save the files in a clearly named folder that includes the game title and, if shown, the version.
- Copy that folder to an external USB SSD or hard drive and a second location.
- Keep any product keys, readme files, patches, and save-data folders with the archive.
Because the installer is an ordinary executable file, you can preserve it without keeping the Galaxy app installed. That does not guarantee that every game is entirely offline: a title may still use third-party DRM, require a publisher account, or depend on servers for multiplayer and other features. Verify those requirements before assuming an installer is sufficient.
Reinstall from the archive
On a replacement or freshly installed computer, run the saved installer, apply any required offline patches, and restore your separately copied saves and settings. If the installer requests an account, key, or online authorization, use the original purchasing account and the records you saved. An archived installer preserves the ability to install the files; it does not transfer the purchase to another account.
Reinstall a digital game on PlayStation
PlayStation reinstalling is license-driven. A copied console folder cannot replace the account and license checks that authorize the game.
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that purchased the game.
- Check the account’s transaction history and confirm that any subscription required for access is active.
- Use the console’s Restore Licenses function.
- If the title still does not start, delete the local game installation and redownload it from the library while signed in to the purchasing account.
- When applicable, verify that the console is set as the primary console or that Console Sharing settings match the account’s authorized console.
- Restore saves using the platform’s supported save-storage method and confirm the correct user profile before launching.
If the game was obtained through a subscription rather than purchased outright, losing the subscription can remove play access even though the installation remains on the drive. A delisting can also prevent a fresh download, so verify the account and license status before deleting a working local copy.
Reinstall a Nintendo digital game
Nintendo states that purchases on the Switch eShop are tied to the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. Access also depends on which console can load that account’s virtual game cards and whether the purchasing account remains linked.

- Sign in to the Nintendo Account that made the purchase.
- Confirm that the account remains linked to the user profile on the console.
- Check which console is authorized to load the account’s virtual game cards.
- Use the account’s redownload or virtual-game-card controls to install the title again.
- Restore save data through the supported console or cloud-save process, if available for that game and subscription.
- Launch the game under the authorized user profile and verify that downloadable content is recognized.
Moving or copying console storage does not transfer the purchase to a different Nintendo Account. If the purchasing account is inaccessible, recover that account before removing local data.

Choose capacity from the library, not a generic size
Game installations vary widely, and patches can require additional temporary space. Check the size of each installation and installer set, add room for saves and future patches, and choose an external drive with spare capacity. The drive preserves files; it does not preserve licenses, so buying a larger drive cannot solve an account or DRM problem.
Use two independent copies
Keep the working archive on an external USB SSD or hard drive and duplicate it to another drive or a separate location. Disconnect at least one copy when it is not being updated. Label each archive with the platform, account, game version, and date of the last successful test.
Test the complete recovery path
A useful test includes more than checking that files exist. Restore the game, sign in to the correct account, launch it, load a copied save, and verify any required launcher or DRM prompt. For a multiplayer title, check whether its online service still responds. Fix a corrupt archive while the original installation remains available.

Common failure modes and the correct response
The copied folder will not launch
Restore through the platform that owns the license instead of launching the copied folder directly. Install the required launcher, sign in to the purchasing account, and complete any DRM authorization. If the game depends on a closed server, no local copy can restore that service.
The backup restores, but saves are missing
Look for the separately copied save and configuration folders. Steam’s game backup does not necessarily include them, and console game data and saves may be managed separately. Restore only the profile belonging to the correct user and game version to avoid overwriting a newer save.
The game is absent after signing in
Check every account, purchase history, library filters, and Hidden Games on Steam. On PlayStation or Nintendo, verify the purchasing account, console authorization, and license or virtual-game-card status. Do not assume a delisting or delete the account while ownership remains unresolved.
Support asks for proof of ownership
Provide transaction records, the original email address, prior login names, product keys where applicable, and other details that connect you to the account. Keep the explanation factual and consistent; a new account or a copied installation does not prove ownership of the original entitlement.
A subscription expired
Determine whether the game was purchased outright or accessed through a subscription. Renewing the relevant subscription may be necessary, but it will not restore a title whose account, DRM, or online service is no longer available.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-delisting checklist
- Identify the store, launcher, purchasing account, publisher account, DRM, subscription, and online servers.
- Download the game before store availability changes.
- Use Steam’s Backup game files for compatible Steam-managed installations.
- Copy saves, settings, maps, mods, and custom content separately.
- Download GOG’s self-executable installers and required patches.
- Store one copy on an external USB SSD or hard drive and another in a separate location.
- Test a restore on another folder or machine where practical.
- Record receipts, account emails, product keys, prior login names, and recovery information.
- For PlayStation, verify the purchasing account, transaction history, subscription, restored licenses, and primary-console or Console Sharing settings before deleting local data.
- For Nintendo, verify the purchasing account, linked user, and console that can load its virtual game cards.
- Keep expectations realistic: a backup cannot recreate a deleted account, bypass DRM, or revive a shut-down online service.
