Make three copies before a major ColorOS or OxygenOS update whenever practical: a local backup on the phone, a Google Account backup, and an off-phone copy of the local Backup folder plus irreplaceable media. A local backup by itself is not independent—OPPO and OnePlus warn that a wipe, flash, factory reset, or restore can erase it. Check your software version first, use the matching menu path, wait for each backup to finish, copy the files with a data-capable USB-C cable, and verify the destination before starting the update.

Why should I back up before updating an OPPO or OnePlus phone?

A normal over-the-air update is designed to preserve your data, but a major release can still be followed by troubleshooting, a failed installation, a factory reset, or a service-center flash. Those recovery actions are the situations in which an on-device backup can disappear. OPPO says files saved in phone storage are cleared after a factory reset and should be exported to a computer first. Its computer guidance also says phone-storage data, including the backup, is erased when the phone is flashed, wiped, or reset. OnePlus gives a similar warning for local backups.

The safest practical arrangement is layered:

  • Local backup: a quick, structured copy of supported contacts, messages, call logs, system data, and apps (with important app-data exclusions).
  • Google Account backup: a cloud copy of supported content, app data, Wi-Fi settings, and other device settings.
  • Computer or external-drive copy: an independent copy of the local Backup folder and personal files such as photos, videos, documents, and recordings.

The three layers cover different failure modes. Cloud backup is convenient, while the manual copy protects the local backup itself from a phone reset and preserves media that device-backup services may not include. The copies are complementary rather than interchangeable: the local archive is useful to the phone’s own restore process, Google backup can follow you to another Android phone, and the computer copy remains available even if the handset has to be wiped.

What should I do before opening the update screen?

First identify the software versions and the Google Account you intend to use. Open Settings > About Phone or About Device and note the ColorOS or OxygenOS release and the Android version. This prevents following a ColorOS 15 instruction on an older build or confusing a backup command with a reset command. Have a computer or separate storage ready, and use a cable that carries data, not only power.

It is also worth making a short inventory of what cannot be replaced: camera photos, videos, recordings, documents, exported chat files, authenticator recovery codes, and any app data that does not sync to an account. The inventory tells you which files to copy manually and which apps need an export or migration step. Do not treat an app’s appearance in a backup list as proof that its private records are included.

How do I identify the right ColorOS or OxygenOS menu?

Menu names change between software generations, models, and regions. Before tapping a backup command, open Settings > About Phone (or About Device) and note the ColorOS, OxygenOS, and Android versions. Then use the closest matching path below. If a label is slightly different, use Settings search for “backup” or “back up and migrate” rather than selecting an unrelated reset command.

Phone software Local-backup path Google-backup path or note
OPPO, ColorOS 15 and newer Settings > System & update > Back up & reset > Back up & migrate > Local backup > New backup Settings > System & update > Back up & reset > Google accounts > Back up now
OPPO, ColorOS 5.0–14 Settings > Additional settings or System settings > Back up and reset > Back up & restore > Local backup > New backup Use the Google backup control available in your version’s backup settings
OnePlus (Android 12 manual) Settings > System settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup, then create a new backup Use the Google backup control in Android’s backup settings

OPPO documents the ColorOS 5.0 through ColorOS 15-and-newer range, but an individual model or regional build can still present a different label. The version shown in About Phone is the deciding reference. A phone may also use “System settings” where another model says “Additional settings,” so check both branches before concluding that local backup is unavailable.

How do I create a local backup on an OPPO phone?

ColorOS 15 and newer

  1. Open Settings > System & update > Back up & reset > Back up & migrate.
  2. Tap Local backup, then New backup.
  3. Review the categories offered by the phone and select the data you want included.
  4. Tap Start and leave the phone alone until the process reports completion.

ColorOS 5.0 through 14

  1. Open Settings > Additional settings or System settings.
  2. Choose Back up and reset > Back up & restore > Local backup.
  3. Tap New backup, select the available data categories, and start the backup.

Do not restart or power off while the local backup is running. The OnePlus manual gives the same caution, because interrupting the process can leave you without a usable copy. The backup normally appears in the phone’s internal shared storage under a folder named Backup; that folder is the one you will copy to another device. Let the completion message appear before disconnecting anything or opening the update control.

The categories shown are the authority for that particular model. Select all supported categories that you need, but remember that a category label such as “apps” does not necessarily mean the app’s private database is included. Keep the local archive even after you have made the computer copy until the updated phone has been checked.

How do I create a local backup on a OnePlus phone?

On the Android 12 OnePlus procedure, open Settings > System settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup, then create a new backup. Select the offered categories and wait for completion without restarting or switching the phone off.

The OnePlus documentation lists contacts, messages, call logs, system data, and apps, but explicitly excludes app data from the app category. That distinction matters: an installed application may be recorded while its private database, account session, downloaded content, or encryption keys are not. Treat the local backup as a foundation, not a guarantee that every application can be restored exactly as it was.

If you are preparing a OnePlus phone running a different Android release, use the labels actually displayed on the device. The Android 12 manual supplies the documented path, while version and regional differences can alter wording. Settings search for “Back up & migrate” is safer than guessing at a nearby reset or restore option.

How do I turn on Google Account backup?

Google Account backup adds a cloud layer for supported content, data, and settings. Google says it can restore information to the original phone or another Android phone, but the exact result varies by device and Android version.

OPPO’s current path

On ColorOS 15 and newer, OPPO lists Settings > System & update > Back up & reset > Google accounts > Back up now. Confirm that the intended Google Account is selected, start the backup, and wait for the recent-backup status to update. On older ColorOS versions, use the Google backup control exposed in that version’s backup settings; the wording may not match the current path.

What Google backup does not promise

Google’s service is not a byte-for-byte image of the phone. A backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version, and restoration behavior differs by device and Android release. App-specific exports, authenticator enrollment, encrypted chat histories, secure notes, banking credentials, and locally stored game saves may require separate action. Open each critical app and look for its own export, sync, migration, or account-transfer feature before updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud status is useful evidence only when it is recent and tied to the correct account. Confirm the account shown in the backup screen and wait for the service to report a completed or recent backup. A cloud copy also does not replace the manual media copy: personal files in DCIM, Movies, Music, documents, or recordings should be checked separately.

How do I copy the local Backup folder to a computer?

A local backup that remains in internal storage is exposed to the same reset or flash that might be needed to recover from an update problem. Copy it off the phone before you install the update. OPPO’s guidance specifically says to export the phone-storage backup to a computer before a factory reset; OnePlus likewise warns that a wipe or factory restore clears local backup data.

  1. Unlock the phone and connect it to a computer with a compatible, data-capable USB-C cable. A charge-only cable cannot transfer the files.
  2. On the phone’s USB notification, choose File Transfer (sometimes shown as “Transfer files”).
  3. On the computer, open the phone and enter Internal shared storage.
  4. Copy the entire Backup folder to a clearly named folder on the computer or an attached external drive.
  5. Also copy personal folders that contain irreplaceable files, especially DCIM for camera media, Movies, and Music. Add documents and recordings stored elsewhere in internal storage.
  6. Open the destination and check that the folders and files are present and have plausible sizes. Do not assume a copy succeeded merely because a transfer window closed.

You can use a USB flash drive or portable SSD instead of a computer if the phone supports the connection, but verify the files on that destination too. A separate physical destination is the important point: a second folder inside the phone is not an independent backup. Keep the off-phone copy until the updated system has started normally and you have checked the data you care about.

If the computer shows charging but no storage, leave the phone unlocked, reconnect the cable, and select File Transfer from the USB notification. Try another USB port or a known data-capable cable before deciding that the Backup folder is missing. Once the copy finishes, open several folders on the destination and, where practical, open representative photos or documents rather than checking names alone.

Which backup method is safest for which kind of data?

Method Storage location Can a phone reset erase it? Typical coverage Effort
Local backup Phone internal storage Yes; a wipe, flash, factory reset, or restore can clear it Supported contacts, messages, call logs, system data, and selected apps; app data may be excluded Manual start, then wait for completion
Google Account backup Google cloud No, provided the account backup completed and remains available Supported app data, Wi-Fi settings, and other device settings; restoration varies by device and Android version Mostly automatic, with a manual “Back up now” action available
Computer or external drive copy Separate physical storage No, unless that separate storage is also lost Local Backup folder plus the media and documents you explicitly copy Manual USB transfer and verification

No single method covers everything. The local copy is useful for the phone’s own restore workflow, Google backup reduces dependence on a cable, and the computer copy preserves both the local archive and personal media if the phone must be wiped. The deciding comparison is recovery independence: only the cloud and separate physical copy remain available if internal storage is erased.

What app data needs a separate export or sync?

Any information that an app keeps in a private or encrypted database deserves individual checking. Examples include authenticator tokens, encrypted chat archives, offline password vaults, financial-app enrollment, two-factor recovery codes, and games that do not use an account. The system may reinstall the app without restoring those records.

  • Open the app’s settings and run its export, backup, or account-sync command.
  • For authenticator apps, use their documented transfer or cloud-sync feature and keep recovery codes offline.
  • For chat apps, verify that an encrypted-chat backup is enabled and that you know the restore password or key.
  • For documents or recordings stored inside an app, use the app’s share/export function to save a readable copy outside the app sandbox.
  • After exporting, open a sample file or confirm the destination account shows a recent sync.

Do not infer coverage from an app appearing in the local-backup list. OnePlus specifically lists apps while excluding app data, and Google qualifies restoration by device and Android version. If an app offers no export or sync feature, record its account or recovery instructions before the update and do not assume a later reinstall can recreate its local state.

How should I verify the copies?

Verification is a separate step, not an assumption that a command completed. For the local backup, wait for the completion message and confirm that a current folder appears in internal shared storage. For Google, confirm the intended account and a recent backup status. For the computer or external drive, inspect the copied Backup folder and media folders, compare their presence and plausible sizes, and open representative files. If a file cannot be read from the destination, copy it again before updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the destination clearly labeled so it is not confused with an older archive. Do not delete the off-phone copy immediately after the update; it is the recovery option if setup or restoration is incomplete.

What should I check immediately before starting the update?

  • Charge the phone and connect it to reliable Wi-Fi.
  • Record the ColorOS or OxygenOS and Android versions from About Phone/About Device.
  • Run the correct local-backup procedure and wait for completion without restarting or powering off.
  • Run Google Account backup and confirm the intended account and a recent backup status.
  • Connect the phone with a data-capable USB-C cable and select File Transfer.
  • Copy the Backup folder, DCIM, Movies, Music, and other irreplaceable files to a computer or external storage.
  • Open the destination and verify that the copied folders and files are readable.
  • Complete separate exports or syncs for critical app data.
  • Only then begin the major software update.

Do not begin the update while a local backup is still running, and do not power off during that backup. The update itself may be routine, but these checks protect you if the phone later requires a wipe, flash, or factory restore.

What can go wrong, and how do I recover?

The backup menu is missing

Recheck About Phone/About Device and try the alternate OPPO label: Additional settings versus System settings. On OnePlus, search Settings for “Back up & migrate.” A carrier or regional build can use a different wording even when the feature exists. Do not choose a command labeled reset merely because it appears near the backup controls.

The computer sees charging but no files

Use a known data-capable USB-C cable, unlock the phone, reconnect it, and select File Transfer from the USB notification. If the destination still shows no storage, try another USB port or another cable before assuming the backup folder is empty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The update fails or the phone requires a reset

Do not rely on the copy that stayed in internal storage; OPPO and OnePlus warn that a reset or wipe can clear it. Use the verified computer/external-drive copy and the completed Google Account backup. If restoring to a different Android release, remember that Google says a backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a lower one.

An app returns without its old data

Restore the app through its own account, import, or migration workflow. If no export or sync was completed beforehand, the system-level backup may not contain the app’s private database or encryption material.

The local backup exists but cannot be found on the computer

Reconnect with the phone unlocked, choose File Transfer, and browse Internal shared storage rather than a charging-only view. Copy the complete Backup folder, not just a file that looks recent. Then check the destination directly; a transfer dialog closing is not proof that every file arrived.

When is it safe to remove the temporary backup?

Keep the computer or external-drive copy until the updated phone has completed setup and you have opened representative contacts, messages, photos, videos, documents, and any high-value app. Once those checks pass, retain an archival copy according to the importance of the data rather than deleting it immediately. The local Backup folder is especially valuable during the transition because it can support another restore attempt if the first one is incomplete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a major ColorOS or OxygenOS update normally delete my photos?

An over-the-air update is intended to preserve user data, but a failed update or repair may lead to a wipe or factory reset. Photos are safest when copied from DCIM and other media folders to separate storage before installation.

Can I restore a Google backup after moving from one Android phone to another?

Google supports restoration to the original or another Android phone, but the result depends on the device and Android version. A backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower version.

What does the OnePlus local backup include?

The Android 12 OnePlus manual lists contacts, messages, call logs, system data, and apps, while excluding app data from the app category. Check important apps separately instead of assuming their private records are included.

Where should I keep the copied Backup folder during the update?

Keep it on a computer, USB flash drive, or portable SSD that is separate from the phone. Open the destination and confirm the files are readable before beginning the update, then retain the copy until you have checked the updated phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where is the Back up and migrate option?

On newer OPPO phones it is under Settings > System & update > Back up & reset > Back up & migrate. OnePlus documents Settings > System settings > Back up & migrate. Older OPPO builds may use Additional settings or System settings, so check About Phone and search Settings for backup if the wording differs.

Is a local backup on the phone by itself safe?

No. OPPO and OnePlus warn that a factory reset, wipe, flash, or restore can clear local backup files. Copy the Backup folder to a computer or separate external storage before the update.

Do I need a special cable to copy the backup?

Use a compatible, data-capable USB-C cable and select File Transfer on the phone. A charge-only cable can power the phone without exposing its files.

What should I do for an authenticator or encrypted chat app?

Use that app’s own export, transfer, or sync feature and preserve any recovery password, key, or codes. System and Google backups do not promise that every private or encrypted app database will be restored.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

How do I know the computer copy worked?

Open the destination, confirm that the Backup folder and selected media folders are present with plausible sizes, and open representative files. Keep the copy until the updated phone has been checked.

The Bottom Line

Before a major OPPO or OnePlus update, run the version-appropriate local backup, complete Google Account backup, and copy the phone’s Backup folder plus irreplaceable media to separate storage. Verify all three layers and handle critical app data through the app’s own export or sync process before installing the update.
