Before changing a Windows 7 PC, use Control Panel > Backup and Restore to save the important user files to a separate drive. Choose Let Windows choose for the wizard’s default selection, or Let me choose to inspect and add locations. Check the selection before running the backup: it is not a guarantee that every application setting or profile detail will be restored exactly.
Choose the backup destination first
Use storage separate from the files you are protecting, such as an external USB hard drive. A separate destination helps keep the backup available if a change affects the computer’s system drive. Choose capacity based on the amount of data selected; if you plan to include a system image, allow for that additional content as well.
Microsoft’s Windows 7 guidance says a system image can be included when the destination is formatted as NTFS and has enough space. A system image serves a broader recovery purpose than a backup of selected personal files.
Run the Windows 7 Backup and Restore wizard
- Connect the separate backup drive, or otherwise identify the destination you intend to use.
- Open Control Panel and select Backup and Restore.
- Start setting up a backup, then choose either Let Windows choose or Let me choose.
- Review the folders and options shown in the wizard. With the custom choice, select the locations you need and decide whether to include a system image.
- Review the summary and any schedule shown. Run the backup before making the planned changes.
Which selection should you use?

Check what the backup includes
Microsoft’s description of the default selection names libraries and these folders for user accounts: AppData, Contacts, Desktop, Downloads, Favorites, Links, Saved Games, and Searches. It also describes inclusion of user-created libraries. Review the wizard’s selection rather than assuming that every important item is in one of those locations.

Use the custom path to add other folders or drives that hold files you need. Do not assume that selecting a user profile means every application-specific setting, credential, or app state will be portable or restored exactly. The wizard’s stated folder coverage does not establish that guarantee.
File backup and system image serve different purposes
- Selected-file backup: saves chosen personal folders and files for file recovery.
- System image: provides a broader system-recovery option. Microsoft says it may be included when the destination is NTFS-formatted and has sufficient space.
One is not a substitute for the other: choose based on what you may need to recover, and review the wizard’s options before starting.

Keep Windows 7’s support status in mind
Windows 7 reached end of support on January 14, 2020. Microsoft says unsupported Windows versions no longer receive technical support, software updates, or security updates. These steps apply to the Windows 7 Backup and Restore wizard; newer Windows Backup and OneDrive instructions describe different workflows. Microsoft also documents restoring files from an existing Backup and Restore (Windows 7) backup in later Windows versions, but that does not establish that every profile or application state can be migrated completely.
