Back up your world before opening it with mods, then test the mods on a separate copy. In Java Edition, select the world under Singleplayer, choose Edit, and click Make Backup to create a dated .zip file. In Bedrock Edition, make a manual backup or export the world first; on Windows, an export creates an .mcworld file. Keep a second copy somewhere outside the active game directory so a damaged modded save cannot replace your only recovery copy.
Why should I back up a world before installing mods?
A backup gives you a way back to the world as it was before a mod changed it. Mods and add-ons can alter how a world loads or behaves, so the safest test is on a copy—not on the only save you care about.

Mojang’s Java help recommends keeping a backup copy to protect your progress; its Bedrock guidance also warns that recreating a world from its seed does not restore progress.
What is the difference between backing up Java and Bedrock worlds?
Java Edition has an in-game Make Backup command that creates a dated ZIP archive. Bedrock relies on a manual world backup or export, or a supported platform cloud save; on Windows, an exported world is an .mcworld file.

Bedrock’s exact backup and restore steps vary across Windows, Android, iPhone and iPad, and consoles. The available instructions establish the methods and Windows export format, but not a single set of menus or file paths that applies to every platform. Check the instructions for your specific device before moving or replacing world data.
How do I back up a Java world?
Use Minecraft’s built-in backup before installing or enabling the mods. Then move a copy of the resulting archive out of the live game directory and verify that it opens.
Recommended Free Tools
- Launch Minecraft and choose Singleplayer.
- Select the world you plan to mod, then choose Edit.
- Click Make Backup. Minecraft creates a dated
.zipbackup. - Use Open Backups Folder to find the archive.
- Copy the ZIP to a location outside the active game directory. Keep another copy on a different device or in off-device storage.
- Check that the archive opens and that the world is still listed in the expected saves list. Do not use your only copy for mod testing.
The default Java saves location is %appdata%.minecraftsaves on Windows and ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves on macOS. If you use a launcher profile with a different game directory, its saves folder may be elsewhere; use that profile’s directory rather than assuming the default path.
How do I back up a Bedrock world?
Create a manual backup or export before enabling add-ons or making other changes. On Windows, export the world to an .mcworld file; on other platforms, the method depends on the device and its supported backup options.

- Windows: Export the world and keep the resulting

A second copy on another device or in off-device storage adds protection if the local copy is lost. - Android, iPhone or iPad, and consoles: Use the platform’s applicable manual backup or supported cloud-save method. The world-data location and available controls vary, so do not assume that Windows file instructions apply.
- Before testing: Preserve an untouched copy of the world. If you plan to use a duplicate, make sure it is the duplicate that you open and change.
Bedrock world data is associated with com.mojang/minecraftWorlds, but the exact parent folder differs by operating system. Avoid moving or deleting files based on a path from another platform.
Where is my Minecraft world save located?
For Java Edition, check the game directory used by the launcher profile you actually play. The default locations are different on Windows and macOS, and a profile can point to a different directory.

- Java on Windows:
%appdata%.minecraftsaves - Java on macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves - Bedrock: World data is under
com.mojang/minecraftWorlds, with the parent path varying by operating system.
If the world is not in the default Java folder, check the launcher profile’s game directory before concluding that the save is missing. For Bedrock, use platform-specific guidance rather than assuming a universal absolute path.
How do I keep modded and vanilla worlds separate?
For Java, make a separate launcher or profile instance for the modded setup, then place a copy of the world in that profile’s saves folder. Leave the original vanilla save untouched.

- Create or select a separate modded profile or instance in your launcher.
- Locate that instance’s game directory and its
savesfolder. - Copy the world into the modded instance. Do not move the only vanilla copy.
- Start the game with the modded profile and open the copied world.
A profile boundary matters because Java mod loaders run when the game starts. A separate instance keeps the modded setup and its world copy apart from the vanilla setup. CurseForge’s guidance similarly recommends separate profiles and advises zipping a world before opening it with different mods. On Bedrock, preserve the original and test an exported or otherwise duplicated world; the available instructions do not establish one profile-based isolation workflow for every platform.
How do I restore a world if a mod corrupts it?
Stop using the damaged copy, then restore the pre-mod backup as a separate world copy. Do not overwrite your only backup or vanilla save while trying to recover.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Quit Minecraft.
- Remove the damaged modded copy from use or rename it so you do not confuse it with the recovery copy.
- For Java, use the dated pre-mod ZIP you saved with Make Backup. Restore a copy of that backup to the appropriate saves location, keeping the recovery separate from the damaged version.
- For Bedrock, restore the manual backup or supported platform cloud save. On Windows, an exported
.mcworldfile is a portable backup artifact. - Launch the restored copy and confirm that the intended world appears before continuing to play.
The exact file-import or restore controls for Bedrock depend on the platform, and the available instructions do not specify one universal sequence. Follow the recovery method supported by your device rather than applying Windows file steps to a console or mobile device.
What can a world seed recover—and what can’t it?
A seed can recreate the world’s terrain, but it does not restore your progress. Mojang’s Bedrock help puts it plainly: “Creating a world from a seed will not restore any progress, but it will let you play through a familiar world.”

Do a basic verification before installing mods: confirm the backup file exists, opens, and is stored somewhere other than the live saves directory. Also check that the world appears in the saves list you expect to use.
- For Java, confirm that the dated ZIP produced by Make Backup is present and opens as an archive.
- For Windows Bedrock, confirm that the exported
.mcworldfile exists in the location where you saved it. - For any edition, check that you have a second copy on a different device or location if the original device fails.
- Keep the backup and untouched world separate from the version you open with mods.
These checks establish that you have an archive or export available; they are not a guarantee that every modded world will behave as expected. The safest protection is to retain the unmodified original and avoid testing changes on the only copy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Minecraft automatically back up my world when I install a mod?
Do not rely on mod installation to create a recovery copy. Java’s documented backup action is a separate, manual Make Backup step; Bedrock backup or export likewise needs to be made before the change.

Will a Minecraft world backup include my mods?
The documented Java artifact is a world backup ZIP, while the Bedrock Windows export is a world file. These instructions do not establish that either artifact preserves a complete mod installation or its configuration, so keep separate records of the mod setup if you need to recreate it.
Can I move a Minecraft backup to another computer?
A Java ZIP or Windows Bedrock .mcworld file can be kept outside the active game directory, which makes it available as a separate backup artifact. To use it on another computer, follow the import or restore method supported by that edition and platform.
How often should I make Minecraft world backups?
Make one immediately before a change that could affect the save, including testing a new mod or add-on. For a world you play regularly, keep dated copies at milestones so a later backup does not become your only recovery point.
