You can automate review collection, triage, translation, context gathering, and reply drafting, but the safest policy-conscious workflow keeps a person in the approval loop before anything is published. Apple and Google provide APIs that can submit replies; that technical capability is not blanket permission for unattended, generic responses. Google explicitly discourages automated replies that are intended to be manually updated later.
What you can automate—and what should stay human-reviewed
Automate the preparation work: retrieve eligible reviews, sort them by issue and urgency, identify language and app-version context where available, and prepare a draft. Have a person verify that the response is accurate, relevant, respectful, and safe to publish. This is a conservative workflow based on the platforms’ published capabilities and guidance, not a guarantee that every reply will comply in every situation.
Keep templates as scaffolding, not copy-and-paste answers. A response should address the reviewer’s stated issue rather than merely acknowledge that a review exists. Do not invent a fix, claim an issue is resolved without evidence, expose account details, or use the reply to solicit a rating or promote the app.
Apple App Store: API support does not replace response guidance
Apple’s Customer Review Responses API supports getting, creating, updating, and deleting responses. A customer review can have at most one response. An appropriately authorized integration can therefore retrieve reviews and submit responses, but the API’s availability should not be treated as approval for generic, unattended replies.

Apple’s ratings and reviews guidance says an ideal response is concise and clearly addresses the feedback. It recommends personalizing responses where possible, and calls for respect while avoiding personal information, marketing language, and spam. App Review Guidelines section 5.6.1 states: “Keep your responses targeted to the user’s comments and do not include personal information, spam or marketing in your response.” Section 5.6.3 prohibits manipulating App Store elements such as reviews and discovery. See Apple’s App Review Guidelines.
Apple account roles and handling exceptions
In App Store Connect, the roles listed for responding to reviews are Account Holder, Admin, and Customer Support. Eligible users can publicly reply, edit, or delete a response; only one response per review appears on the product page. Apple says a response may take up to 24 hours to appear. See Respond to reviews.

For downloading errors or billing issues, Apple’s guidance directs developers to Apple Support. For offensive, spam, or otherwise terms-violating reviews, use “Report a Concern” rather than replying. That distinction prevents a public support reply from becoming the wrong channel for either an Apple service problem or a policy violation.
Google Play: avoid unattended machine-generated replies
Google’s Reply to Reviews API can submit or update a reply for an individual review. The endpoint uses the package name and review ID and requires Android Publisher authorization. Google’s guide describes OAuth client or service-account access with the Reply to reviews permission enabled.

Google’s Reply to Reviews guide makes the policy caution especially clear: “We discourage the use of automated replies to reviews, with the intention of updating those replies manually at a later time.” Use automation to prepare and route drafts, then have a person approve the response before publication rather than relying on later manual correction.
Google API limits and review coverage
The Google API guide covers production-app reviews that include comments; ratings without comments are not accessible through this API. The reply endpoint rejects text longer than approximately 350 characters, and strips HTML tags. Google’s method page was last updated 2025-05-21 UTC. The guide also warns that replies appear publicly on the app store page and must not include sensitive information about users.

A safe review-reply automation workflow
- Retrieve new reviews. Use authorized platform APIs or the relevant console. On Google Play, the Reply to Reviews API does not expose ratings that have no comment.
- Classify the issue and urgency. Identify whether the feedback concerns a bug, billing, account access, safety, or another topic. Detect language and app-version context where available, but do not assume those details are present for every review.
- Prepare a grounded draft. Use approved support facts and tested remediation steps. Address the review’s specific point; do not promise an unverified fix or suggest that a user’s issue is resolved without evidence.
- Escalate sensitive or uncertain cases. Route safety, billing, account-specific, abusive, ambiguous, and potentially legal matters to the appropriate human team. For App Store billing and download problems, direct the customer to Apple Support; report reviews that violate Apple’s terms instead of replying.
- Require human approval before publication. Check relevance, tone, factual accuracy, privacy, and policy. This is particularly important for Google Play given Google’s warning about automated replies that are intended to be updated manually later.
- Publish through an authorized channel and keep an audit trail. Record who approved and sent the response. Monitor whether the reviewer updates the review or needs further help.
Checklist for choosing a review-reply tool
If you use customer-support or app-review software, evaluate whether it supports both stores and whether its workflow helps staff meet these requirements:
- Human approval before publication, with an audit trail showing who approved a reply.
- Access permissions aligned with each platform’s account and API authorization requirements.
- Privacy controls that prevent sensitive user or account information from entering a public response.
- Language and app-version context handling, with a clear way to flag missing or uncertain details.
- Checks or workflow safeguards against duplicate, irrelevant, or generic replies.
These are evaluation criteria derived from the platforms’ published guidance, not claims about the capabilities of any particular vendor.
