To check whether a hosting control panel may have been exploited, preserve the original records first, then correlate panel activity with authentication, web-server, application-security, operating-system, database, mail and network logs. A single failed login, ModSecurity alert or unusual request is a lead—not proof. Confidence comes from a time-aligned chain showing how access was obtained, what changed, which accounts or sites were reached, and whether activity continued. If evidence points to root access or compromise of multiple customers, isolate the server while investigating and prepare for a clean rebuild from known-good backups.

What can a server-log audit actually establish?

A log review can establish a defensible timeline and scope: which addresses authenticated, which panel functions were used, what web requests arrived, which files or permissions changed, and whether system or database activity followed. It can also show that expected evidence is missing or that logging was disabled. It cannot, by itself, prove that every malicious action was recorded or identify an attacker with certainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret each event against the server’s normal workload and configuration. A scheduled backup may create thousands of file operations; a reseller’s automation may produce repeated panel API calls; a vulnerability scanner may generate obvious probes without gaining access. Conversely, a quiet successful login followed by a new administrator, a changed SSH key and a webshell request is far more significant than any one line considered alone.

  • Detection: identify events that could indicate abuse.
  • Scoping: determine affected accounts, sites, services and privilege level.
  • Remediation: contain, patch, eradicate and rebuild where necessary. Do not alter evidence while performing the first two stages.

Use official documentation for the panel and current security advisories. DirectAdmin’s documented log locations are described in its directories and locations guide. cPanel documents its ModSecurity audit log in this support article.

How do I preserve evidence before examining the logs?

Preservation comes before searching, rotation cleanup or a reboot. Record what you know, make read-only copies, and keep an audit trail of every person and command that handled the material.

  1. Open an incident record. Write down the discovery time and time zone, panel name and version, host names and addresses, suspected first event, known maintenance, and the administrators or providers who can access the machine. Note whether clocks are synchronized and which systems use UTC or local time.
  2. Capture current state. Record running services, active sessions, network connections, mounted volumes, scheduled jobs and process lists according to your incident-response procedure. If root-level compromise is possible, avoid making broad changes that overwrite volatile evidence; obtain specialist advice before shutting down.
  3. Export before rotation. Copy panel, authentication, web, ModSecurity or other application-firewall, operating-system, database, mail, scheduled-task and firewall logs covering a generous period before and after the suspected event. Preserve compressed archives and their original file metadata.
  4. Hash and restrict the copies. Generate cryptographic hashes, store them with the case record, and make the evidence directory read-only for investigators who do not need to delete files. Keep originals on the host only when no safer alternative exists.
  5. Preserve central records. If logs already go to a remote collector, retain the collector’s copies, ingestion timestamps, access history and configuration. Compare them with local files for gaps or truncation.

Guidance from the Australian Signals Directorate and international partners recommends centralized, secure event storage, controlled access, integrity protection and backups because an intruder can alter or delete local records. See Best practices for event logging and threat detection (22 August 2024). Do not delete suspicious accounts, rotate every credential or “clean” files until the evidence set is secured; those actions can destroy the sequence you need to understand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which logs and paths should I collect?

Panel logs are only one layer. Collect every source enabled on the host and verify its active path rather than assuming a default. The following locations are documented examples, not a guarantee that your server has the same layout.

Evidence source What to look for Documented location or qualification
DirectAdmin panel Successful and failed logins, suspicious incidents, disabled-command attempts and administrative actions /var/log/directadmin/, including access.log, login.log, security.log, system.log and dated YYYY-MM-DD.log records. DirectAdmin says access.log does not yet represent every request compatibly, so read it with the dated logs.
cPanel ModSecurity Rule matches, blocked or logged requests, target URIs, request bodies and response details useful for web-exploit triage The documented default is /usr/local/apache/logs/modsec_audit.log. The active SecAuditLog directive can point elsewhere; verify the running Apache configuration.
Web server access and error logs Requests to administration paths, uploads, unusual methods, encoded traversal, status-code changes, referrers and user agents Use the paths configured for Apache, Nginx or another server; include virtual-host logs for each affected site.
Authentication and identity SSH, panel, FTP, API and database logins; source addresses; MFA failures; password or key changes; new users and groups Collect the operating system’s authentication files or journal plus panel identity records and any external identity-provider logs.
System and scheduler Privilege changes, service starts, package changes, cron or timer edits, kernel messages, process creation and security-tool alerts Include system journal or event logs, audit framework records, cron directories and service-manager history where enabled.
Application, database and mail New administrator records, SQL errors, unexpected exports, mail-volume spikes, API-token use and application-file changes Use each application’s configured logs and database audit facility; record retention and timezone settings.
Network and perimeter Firewall accepts or denies, VPN access, DNS changes, load-balancer requests and connections to management ports Preserve gateway, provider and centralized network telemetry when available.

For cPanel’s ModSecurity log, confirm the effective setting instead of relying on the default path: inspect the active Apache configuration for SecAuditLog, then record the result and the time it was checked. For DirectAdmin, include the dated files even when access.log appears complete. A missing file may mean rotation, disabled logging, a different path or tampering; document which explanation is supported.

How do I build a reliable cross-log timeline?

Normalize timestamps before drawing conclusions. Record the timezone and clock source for every system, convert a working copy to UTC, and retain the original timestamp in your notes. Allow for clock drift, delayed log shipping and daylight-saving transitions.

  1. Set the incident window. Start before the earliest known symptom—such as a changed site file, a customer report or an alert—and extend beyond the last suspicious activity. Expand the window if later evidence points to an earlier foothold.
  2. Anchor known events. Mark legitimate deployments, backups, maintenance windows, support sessions and password resets. These anchors prevent normal automation from being mislabeled.
  3. Join on multiple keys. Correlate timestamp, source address, account name, session or request identifier, destination host, process ID and user-agent string where available. Do not rely on an IP address alone; shared NAT, proxies and cloud addresses can represent many users.
  4. Follow cause and effect. A typical chain might be a failed login burst, one successful authentication, a privilege change, a panel API call, a web request that writes a file, a new child process and outbound network traffic. Each link should be supported by its own source.
  5. Mark uncertainty. Label events as confirmed, probable, possible or unexplained. Record gaps such as a collector outage, rotated files or an unsynchronized clock instead of silently filling them.

Keep enough surrounding records to distinguish a one-off scan from a successful exploit. Logging policy should state which events are collected, who monitors them, how long they are retained, how integrity is protected and when the policy is reassessed. There is no single retention period that fits every host; legal obligations, customer contracts, storage capacity and the time needed to discover an intrusion all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What panel and authentication indicators deserve priority?

Start with events that can change control of the panel or an account, then test whether they align with a real user or approved automation.

Unexpected successful access

  • A successful panel, SSH, FTP, API or database login from an unfamiliar address, country or hosting provider.
  • A login at an unusual hour, immediately after repeated failures, or using a user agent unlike the administrator’s normal tool.
  • Concurrent sessions that cannot be explained by a support team, deployment system or shared address.
  • MFA enrollment, reset or bypass events that were not requested by the account owner.

Administrative changes

  • New panel users, reseller accounts, SSH keys, API tokens, email forwarders or database principals.
  • Changes to roles, ownership, file permissions, DNS, scheduled tasks, firewall rules, PHP handlers or disabled-command settings.
  • Unexplained enabling of a service, module or remote-management interface.

DirectAdmin identifies security.log as a place for suspicious incidents such as failed logins, abnormal mail volume and attempts to use disabled commands, while system.log records valuable panel actions. Treat those entries as leads and corroborate them with authentication and system records.

How should I inspect web, ModSecurity and application logs?

Search for requests that could deliver code, bypass authentication or reach management functions, then trace what happened immediately before and after them.

Web-server requests

  • Requests for newly created or oddly named scripts, upload directories, temporary files and hidden paths.
  • POST or multipart requests to endpoints that normally receive only small, structured data.
  • Encoded traversal, command separators, template expressions, serialized payloads or unusually long query strings.
  • Sudden changes in status codes, response sizes, referrers or user agents from one source.

A blocked request is not proof of compromise, and a 200 response is not proof of success. Check application logs, file timestamps and process activity to determine whether the request reached vulnerable code.

ModSecurity or another application firewall

For cPanel, the default ModSecurity audit path is /usr/local/apache/logs/modsec_audit.log, but the path may be changed with SecAuditLog. Inspect the active directive and preserve the complete transaction record, including rule ID, matched data, URI, request method, source address and response status. Group repeated rule hits by source and target, then compare them with successful application actions rather than counting alerts.

Application and database behavior

  • New administrator rows, password-reset tokens, API keys, webhooks or payment settings.
  • SQL errors followed by successful data changes, exports or creation of privileged accounts.
  • Unexpected file writes, altered templates, modified environment files or disabled update checks.
  • Mail queues or outbound messages that exceed the site’s normal volume.

Capture the application version, enabled plugins or modules and deployment history. A log entry is stronger when the application, database and filesystem all show the same action in sequence.

How do I investigate a suspected webshell?

Government guidance for large-scale CMS exploitation recommends finding requests to webshell paths, tracing earlier suspicious requests, reviewing authentication and network logs, and checking persistence, lateral movement, abnormal file creation and unexpected child processes. Apply that sequence without opening a suspected script in a production interpreter.

  1. Identify candidate files. Compare the site against a known-good release or backup. Flag files created or modified in the incident window, especially in upload, cache and temporary directories, and scripts with obfuscated or unusually compressed content.
  2. Trace the first request. Search access logs for the candidate path and its directory, including URL-encoded variants, alternate case and query strings. Walk backward to the request that may have uploaded or created it.
  3. Correlate execution. Check PHP or application logs, operating-system audit records and process telemetry for a web-facing service spawning shells, interpreters, archive tools or download utilities.
  4. Check persistence. Review cron and timer entries, startup scripts, service units, SSH keys, panel hooks, database-stored jobs and modified configuration files.
  5. Check movement and reach. Look for connections from the web process to databases, internal hosts, management ports or other customer accounts, plus authentication attempts using credentials found on the site.
  6. Preserve before removal. Copy the file, metadata, related requests and process information to evidence storage. Quarantine or remove it only under the containment plan.

One suspicious script can be a false positive, a legitimate maintenance tool or a remnant of an older incident. Confidence increases when its creation request, execution record, child process and outbound connection form a consistent chain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell scanning from a successful panel exploit?

Scanning usually produces repeated probes, many failures and little corresponding state change. Exploitation is more credible when a request is followed by authenticated activity, a new account or key, changed files, a child process, database modification or outbound communication.

Pattern Questions to test
Broad probe Did many unrelated paths receive similar requests, mostly errors, with no file or account changes?
Targeted attempt Did requests concentrate on the panel version, a plugin, upload handler or management endpoint?
Likely success Did a successful login, privilege change, file write, process spawn or database event occur within a plausible delay?
Ongoing control Are there repeated logins, persistence mechanisms, scheduled tasks, new tokens or continuing outbound connections?

Do not use geography, reputation lists or a single HTTP status as a verdict. Shared infrastructure, reverse proxies and compromised third parties can make a familiar address benign-looking, while an unfamiliar address can belong to a legitimate administrator.

How do I scope the compromise and decide on containment?

Scope from the highest privilege and widest customer impact downward. Determine whether the evidence affects one application, one hosting account, several accounts, the panel itself or the operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Single-site indication: limit the affected code and data, but verify that the account’s credentials, databases, scheduled jobs and neighboring sites were not used as pivots.
  • Panel or reseller indication: review every account, administrator action, API token, DNS change and password reset in the window.
  • Root or multi-account indication: treat the host as untrusted. cPanel’s guidance, What do I do if I believe my server has been hacked?, advises taking the server offline during investigation in these cases. A clean rebuild or operating-system and panel reinstall using known-good off-site backups may be required.

Containment can include removing public access, blocking the exploited route, disabling a vulnerable service, isolating the host at the network edge and rotating credentials from a clean device. Preserve evidence first, and coordinate customer notification, legal duties and provider escalation. Patch confirmed vulnerable software and close the access path; do not assume that patching alone removes persistence.

Which current advisories should influence the review?

Vulnerability indicators and affected versions change, so consult current vendor and government notices rather than an old checklist. Two 2026 advisories illustrate why the date and product context must travel with any finding:

  • The Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre reported active exploitation of a critical cPanel/WHM vulnerability, CVE-2026-41940, on 1 May 2026 and said patches had been released on 30 April 2026. The alert is at cyber.gov.au/alert/active-exploitation-of-cpanel-whm-critical-vulnerability.
  • Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency advisory of 5 August 2026 described CVE-2026-58048 with a CVSS v4.0 severity of 9.4/10 and recommended immediate updates plus review of system and database logs. See the advisory for its stated vulnerability context.

Record the advisory date, affected component, installed version, patch state and any indicators supplied by the authority. cPanel’s security-update information page, Where can I find information for TSR announcements, disclosures and security updates?, is a useful starting point for its notices.

How should I improve logging after the audit?

Convert gaps found during the investigation into specific control changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Send panel, authentication, web, application-security, system, database, mail and network events to a protected central collector.
  • Use synchronized time and retain both the original timestamp and the collector’s receipt time.
  • Restrict who can read, alter or delete logs; separate collection credentials from host administrators where practical.
  • Protect integrity with append-only or write-once storage, hashes or signed archives, and test restoration from backups.
  • Alert on high-value changes such as new administrators, MFA resets, SSH-key additions, disabled security rules, privilege escalation and logging-service stoppage.
  • Review coverage after panel upgrades, architecture changes, new tenants and major incidents.

Measure coverage by the questions an investigation must answer: who authenticated, what administrative change occurred, which request triggered it, which process executed, what data changed and where the connection went. A log source that cannot answer one of those questions may need reconfiguration or a compensating control.

What mistakes make a log audit unreliable?

  • Searching only the panel log: exploitation may appear first in web, authentication, application or system records.
  • Assuming default paths: rotation rules, containers, custom Apache settings and provider tooling can move or filter logs.
  • Reading timestamps without timezone conversion: this can invert the apparent order of login, file write and process events.
  • Treating an alert as proof: rules fire on probes and legitimate edge cases; corroborate with state changes.
  • Cleaning before copying: deleting webshells or resetting users can erase the strongest evidence.
  • Ignoring missing data: gaps, abrupt sequence resets and collector outages are findings to explain.
  • Rebuilding without preserving scope: a new server may be clean while stolen credentials, tokens or customer data remain exposed.
  • Using stale vulnerability lists: follow current vendor and government advisories and record their dates.

What should the final audit record contain?

Deliver a concise case package that another administrator can reproduce.

  1. Incident identifier, discovery time, time zone, systems, panel and software versions, and evidence custodians.
  2. Hash manifest and chain-of-custody log for every exported file.
  3. Source inventory showing configured paths, retention, clock source and any gaps.
  4. UTC-normalized timeline with links to the original records and confidence labels.
  5. Affected accounts, sites, credentials, data stores, processes and network destinations.
  6. Indicators of compromise suitable for detection elsewhere, without treating them as universal signatures.
  7. Containment, patching, credential-rotation, notification and rebuild decisions, with the person and time for each action.
  8. Logging and configuration changes required to prevent the same blind spot.

This format separates what the logs show from what you infer, preserves uncertainty, and gives responders a practical basis for containment or a clean rebuild.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I retain hosting-panel and security logs?

Choose a period based on how long an intrusion could remain undiscovered, contractual and legal requirements, customer risk, and the time needed to investigate. Keep high-value administrative and authentication events longer than verbose request traces when storage is limited, and document the policy so rotation is deliberate rather than accidental.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether an attacker deleted or altered the logs?

Compare local files with remote collector copies, backup snapshots and service metadata. Look for unexplained time gaps, abrupt numbering or timestamp changes, stopped logging services, permissions changing on log directories, and collector receipt times with no matching host records.

Should I reboot a server as soon as I find a suspicious process?

A reboot may destroy volatile memory, active-connection and process evidence. If root access or harm is ongoing, isolate the host at the network edge and involve an incident-response specialist; otherwise capture the required volatile and persistent evidence first, following your organization’s procedure.

What if my panel has no useful audit log?

Record that limitation, verify whether logging was disabled or redirected, and rely on web-server, authentication, operating-system, database, application and network sources. Enable detailed administrative and security logging after preserving the current state, and send future events to a protected collector so a panel-level gap is not the only record.
