Assume an API key or GitHub token found in a repository, build log, issue, or other GitHub-accessible location is compromised. Revoke or rotate it first, update every service that used the old value, and then examine provider and GitHub logs for activity during the period of exposure. For a GitHub token used against an organization, GitHub documents a token-specific search: calculate the token’s SHA-256 hash and query the organization audit log with hashed_token:"VALUE". That search does not cover every Git event, and an empty result is not proof that the credential was unused. A defensible investigation records the credential, evidence source, date range, access method, matching events, and the visibility limits that could leave gaps.
What should I do first when an API key or GitHub token is exposed?
Containment comes before log analysis. A valid credential can be used while you are still searching, and investigating first can give an attacker more time. Preserve enough context to identify the credential and its owner, but do not copy the secret into tickets, chat, screenshots, shell history, or new log files.
- Record the minimum facts: credential type, repository or system where it appeared, discovery time, suspected exposure interval, affected owner or integration, and the person responsible for revocation.
- Revoke or rotate the credential: delete a compromised GitHub personal access token and create a replacement. For a provider API key, disable it or issue a new key using that provider’s documented control.
- Update dependents: replace the value in CI/CD secrets, deployment settings, local secret stores, applications, scheduled jobs, and integrations. Confirm that the replacement is active before removing the old value from production configuration.
- Check validity and provider security logs: where the provider offers a token-validity check or security activity log, use it to determine whether the credential could still authenticate and whether unexpected activity occurred.
- Start an evidence record: note the exact revocation time, the time zone, the people who handled the incident, and the log sources that will be searched.
GitHub’s secret-scanning guidance says to rotate an affected credential immediately and to treat a secret committed to a repository as compromised. Removing the value from Git history may be useful for reducing future exposure, but GitHub notes that it is often unnecessary once the credential has been revoked; invalidation is the urgent control.

GitHub provides a credential-revocation API for supported token types. Its documentation states that submitting a valid supported token to that endpoint revokes it automatically and that the request does not require authentication. Support is limited to documented token types, so do not assume that an arbitrary third-party API key or every GitHub credential can use this method.

Which logs can show whether the credential was used?
No single GitHub screen is a complete record of credential activity. Choose the source based on the authentication system, event type, retention window, and whether the organization enabled the necessary telemetry.
| Evidence source | What it can show | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Organization audit log in the web UI | Organization events searchable by actor, action, repository, time, and supported authentication fields. | The interface and its filters expose only the data available to that log; it does not return Git events. The display may default to the most recent three months unless an older range is selected. |
| Organization audit-log REST API or JSON/CSV export | Structured organization events that can be retained and correlated in another system. | REST searches do not return Git events. API permissions, pagination, date limits, and the selected organization affect results. |
| Exported Git-event data | Git operations and their authentication details, including token-authenticated Git activity where the relevant fields are present. | Git events have a shorter documented retention window and are not returned by ordinary UI or REST token searches. Git-event token display is documented as public preview and may change. |
| Enterprise or organization audit-log streaming | Near-real-time events delivered to an external log-management or SIEM system, enabling longer retention and advanced correlation. | Retention is controlled by the receiving system. Streaming must have been configured before the event, and the external system may not contain API-request or source-IP data unless those features were enabled. |
| Secret-scanning alerts | The detected secret’s repository location, alert status, and, where supported, GitHub-token validity or metadata. | An alert identifies an exposure location; it is not a substitute for provider logs or audit-event review and does not cover every place a credential can leak. |
| Provider security and access logs | Use of an API key or token against the service that issued it, often with request time, resource, actor, or source address. | Retention, fields, and search syntax vary by provider. A GitHub audit search cannot establish activity against a different service. |
For an organization investigation, write down whether you used the web interface, REST API, an export, or streamed data. Also record whether Git events, API-request events, and source-IP disclosure were enabled. Two searches that use different access methods can legitimately return different evidence.
How do I search a GitHub organization audit log for a specific token?
GitHub’s documented token-specific method hashes the token with SHA-256 and searches the organization audit log for the quoted hashed_token qualifier. Never send the live token to a hashing website, paste it into a ticket, or include it in a command that will be saved in shared shell history.

1. Isolate the token value safely
Use a protected workstation and a temporary environment variable or secure secret input. The examples below use a variable name rather than a real credential. Verify that terminal history, process inspection, CI logs, and command transcripts will not record the value.
2. Calculate the SHA-256 hash on macOS or Linux
With the token held in an environment variable, run:
printf %s "$GITHUB_TOKEN" | openssl dgst -sha256
The output contains the SHA-256 digest. Copy only the hexadecimal digest into the search, not the original token. If your environment prints a prefix such as (stdin)=, remove the prefix and preserve the lowercase hexadecimal value.
3. Calculate the hash in PowerShell
Keep the token in a protected variable and hash its UTF-8 bytes:
$bytes = [Text.Encoding]::UTF8.GetBytes($env:GITHUB_TOKEN)
$hash = [Security.Cryptography.SHA256]::Create().ComputeHash($bytes)
$hex = -join ($hash | ForEach-Object { $_.ToString('x2') })
$hex
Clear the variable after use according to your organization’s handling procedure. Do not paste the output into a public gist, issue, or unredacted incident channel.

4. Search the organization audit log
In the organization audit-log search, enter the qualifier with the digest in quotes:
hashed_token:"SHA256_DIGEST"
Replace SHA256_DIGEST with the digest you calculated. Add a time range that begins before the earliest plausible exposure and ends after the revocation time. If you use the REST API, URI-escape the hash and the complete search phrase as required by the endpoint; an unescaped value can produce a malformed query or no results.
5. Capture the result without exposing the secret
Export or record matching event IDs, timestamps with time zone, actors, actions, repositories or resources, authentication fields, scopes when shown, and source IP or location when available. Store the export in an access-controlled incident location. The event should contain a token hash or authentication metadata, not the token’s plaintext value.
What do the token fields in a GitHub audit event mean?
Token-related audit data can include hashed_token, programmatic_access_type, and, when applicable, token_scopes. Together, these fields help you distinguish the credential involved and assess whether the observed operation fits its intended use.
hashed_token: the SHA-256-derived identifier used to match events to the exposed token without placing the secret in the query.programmatic_access_type: an indication of the programmatic authentication category, such as a personal access token, OAuth token, or GitHub App authentication, when the event provides it.token_scopes: scopes associated with the token when GitHub includes them. Scopes help estimate possible impact but do not prove that every permitted action occurred.
GitHub’s organization guidance discusses personal access tokens, OAuth tokens, GitHub Apps, deploy keys, and SSH keys among authentication methods that may appear in token-related data. SSH-key and deploy-key information is identified as public preview, so field names and availability can change. Do not apply the hashed_token search to an unrelated provider’s API key or assume that every authentication method will produce the same fields.
How do I investigate Git activity that the normal audit search misses?
Ordinary organization audit-log searches in the UI and REST API do not return Git events. If you need to know whether the exposed token authenticated Git operations such as fetch, clone, or push, obtain the documented Git-event export and inspect its authentication details.
- Check the Git-event retention window: GitHub’s current organization documentation describes a seven-day retention window for Git events in the documented methods. Start the export immediately if the suspected activity may fall inside that period.
- Export the relevant interval: use the organization’s supported Git-event export method and include the earliest possible exposure through revocation. Preserve the raw export before filtering.
- Filter for authentication details: look for the token-authentication fields, repository, actor, operation, timestamp, and source address when present. Git-event token display is public preview and may not be identical across accounts or dates.
- Compare with expected work: match repositories and operations to known automation, developer activity, deployment windows, and approved source networks.
- Record absence carefully: if no Git events are returned, state that the export contained no matching records for the selected interval and retention window. Do not state that the token was never used.
High-volume Git operations, unusual repository access, and activity outside normal working patterns can indicate data collection or exfiltration, but volume alone is not proof. A build system or mirror can legitimately generate many operations, so correlate the events with owner, source address, job history, and deployment records.

Build an incident timeline
- First appearance of the credential in a commit, build log, artifact, issue, or other location.
- First time the location was publicly or organizationally accessible.
- Secret-scanning detection and alert creation time.
- Credential validation, revocation, or rotation time.
- Every matching audit, Git, provider, and CI event, normalized to one time zone.
- Deployment or configuration changes made after rotation.
Assess each event
- Actor: identify the user, app, integration, or unknown principal.
- Action and target: determine which repository, organization resource, API operation, or Git action was involved.
- Authentication: confirm whether the event is tied to the hashed token, another token, an OAuth flow, an app, a deploy key, or SSH.
- Privilege: compare recorded scopes or permissions with the operation. A broad scope increases potential impact but does not establish that sensitive data was accessed.
- Source: use IP address, location, network, and user-agent information only when the relevant disclosure or logging feature was enabled.
- Expectation: compare the event with approved users, scheduled jobs, code-review activity, and known integration behavior.
GitHub recommends looking for unexpected actors and unknown IP addresses when IP disclosure is enabled. Treat geolocation as a clue rather than identity proof; corporate proxies, VPNs, and cloud runners can make a legitimate action appear distant.
How do secret-scanning alerts help the investigation?
Secret scanning supplies the exposure context that an access log may not: repository location, file or commit information, alert status, and the time GitHub detected the pattern. GitHub can scan Git history across branches and other supported content, so inspect the alert’s listed locations rather than assuming only the latest file is affected.
Use the alert to find every exposure location
Review all locations in the alert, including earlier commits and branches where the feature is supported. Search source, .env files, configuration files, generated artifacts, and build output for other credentials. A single leaked token often indicates a process problem or a copied secret, not an isolated line.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse validity and metadata as triage signals
For supported GitHub tokens, validity checks and metadata such as last-used information can help prioritize review. GitHub describes token metadata as public preview and subject to change. Treat a “not used” or missing metadata result as limited evidence, not as a replacement for audit and provider logs.
Resolve the alert accurately
After revocation or rotation, confirm that dependent services use the replacement and select an alert resolution that reflects what happened. Do not mark an alert as a false positive merely because the token was quickly revoked; the credential was still exposed and the record should preserve that fact.
What are the retention and access limits?
Retention is part of the evidence, not an administrative detail. A missing event can mean that the credential was unused, but it can also mean the event aged out, the wrong log type was searched, or the organization had not enabled the necessary telemetry.
| Data or method | Documented window or dependency | How to state the result |
|---|---|---|
| Organization audit events | GitHub’s current organization audit-log documentation describes 180 days. | State the exact date range searched and whether the selected method covered the required event type. |
| Git events | The documented methods describe seven days. | Explain that ordinary UI and REST searches do not include Git events and that an older Git investigation may be impossible through those methods. |
| Streamed audit data | Retention is set by the external receiving system. | Name the system, retention policy, ingestion start date, and any outage or filtering period. |
| Source-IP visibility | Available only where the relevant disclosure or logging configuration was enabled. | Do not infer that an event had no source address merely because the field is absent. |
| API-request events | Visibility depends on organization or enterprise configuration and the access method used. | Record whether API-request logging was enabled before the suspected activity. |
The web interface may show only the past three months by default even when an older organization-event range is available. Explicitly set the start and end dates, and preserve a screenshot or export of the query parameters with the raw results. If the event falls outside the documented window, use provider-side logs, CI records, network telemetry, or a previously configured stream rather than presenting the absence as exoneration.
When should I use an external log-management or SIEM system?
Use external retention and querying when the built-in windows, filters, or event coverage are insufficient for your organization’s response requirements. GitHub recommends streaming enterprise audit logs to an external SIEM or log-management system for advanced querying; the choice of product is an operational decision, not a requirement for the basic token-hash search.

Compare the options by evidence coverage
| Approach | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Web audit-log search | Fast triage of recent organization events by an authorized administrator. | Manual filtering, limited retention presentation, and no Git events. |
| REST search and export | Repeatable collection, pagination, automation, and evidence preservation. | Requires appropriate permissions and still excludes Git events from ordinary searches. |
| Git-event export | Investigating token-authenticated Git operations inside the short retention window. | Time-sensitive, separate from ordinary audit data, and subject to preview-field changes. |
| Streamed external logs | Longer retention, cross-system correlation, alerting, and advanced queries. | Must be configured in advance; retention, access control, and parsing become the receiving system’s responsibility. |
For any external system, document ingestion start time, event filters, clock synchronization, retention, role permissions, and whether raw payloads were altered during parsing. A query result is stronger when you can show the original event and the transformation that produced the searchable record.
How do I investigate activity outside GitHub?
A GitHub token may be used only against GitHub, but an API key can authorize calls to a separate service, and a copied secret may have been reused elsewhere. Search the issuing provider’s access and security logs for the suspected exposure interval, then correlate request times with GitHub events, CI jobs, deployment records, and network telemetry.
- Look for first use after the credential appeared, activity from unfamiliar networks, and calls outside the application’s normal schedule.
- Compare requested resources, response sizes, and operation types with the integration’s documented behavior.
- Check whether the key had read, write, administrative, billing, or data-export privileges.
- Review related credentials and service accounts created or modified near the same time.
- Preserve provider request IDs and raw exports when the provider supplies them.
Do not claim that a clean GitHub audit log clears an API key used against another provider. Each issuer has its own event model and retention, and the provider-side search is the authoritative source for its service.
What should the final incident record contain?
A concise evidence record lets another responder understand both the finding and its limits without receiving the secret itself.
- Credential type, owner, affected repository or service, and the location where it was found.
- Discovery, exposure, validation, revocation, and rotation times with time zone.
- Hash-search method, including the organization, query qualifier, and date range, but never the plaintext token.
- Access methods used: web UI, REST API, JSON/CSV export, Git-event export, provider logs, and external stream.
- Matching events with event IDs, actor, action, resource, authentication type, scopes when shown, and source information when available.
- Negative-search qualifications: retention window, missing Git events, disabled API-request or IP logging, permission limits, and any unavailable provider logs.
- Services updated to the replacement credential and verification that the old value no longer works.
- Secret-scanning alert locations, remediation status, and searches for additional exposures.
- Evidence custody: storage location, access list, export checksums where policy requires them, and any legal hold.
Use the least privilege needed to access the record. Raw audit exports can contain usernames, repository names, IP addresses, and sensitive operational details even when they do not contain the credential itself.
What common mistakes produce misleading results?
Searching for the plaintext token
Plaintext searches can leak the credential again and will not match GitHub’s token-hash field. Hash locally and search with the documented qualifier.
Stopping after revocation
Revocation prevents future authentication but does not explain actions performed before revocation. Complete the time-bounded log review and provider investigation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Treating an empty UI result as proof of non-use
The UI may have a narrow date range, ordinary searches omit Git events, and retention or configuration may leave gaps. Export the applicable Git data and document every limitation.

Assuming a token hash covers every credential
The hashed_token method is for GitHub audit-log authentication data. An arbitrary API key requires the issuing provider’s own logs and search method.
Cleaning history before rotating
History rewriting can take time, disrupt clones, and leave the credential active during the cleanup. Invalidate the credential first, then decide whether history remediation is worth the operational cost.
Ignoring automation
Build runners, mirrors, bots, and deployment jobs can create unusual-looking activity. Verify expected automation with job logs and owners before labeling an event malicious, while still escalating unexplained access.
What is a defensible end-to-end workflow?
Use this sequence when you need a repeatable response rather than an ad hoc search.
- Contain: revoke or rotate the exposed credential and update every dependent service.
- Preserve context: record where and when it was exposed without copying the secret.
- Define the window: choose the earliest possible exposure through the confirmed revocation time, then account for log retention.
- Collect organization events: search the hashed GitHub token where supported, and export raw results.
- Collect Git events: use the separate Git-event export when Git operations could matter.
- Collect provider evidence: search the API issuer’s security and access logs for the same interval.
- Correlate: compare actor, repository or resource, action, scope, source, and expected automation.
- Expand the search: review secret-scanning locations and search code, configuration, environment files, and build artifacts for additional credentials.
- Remediate: update services, reduce permissions, remove unnecessary secrets from future logs, and consider history cleanup after invalidation.
- Close out: preserve exports, document gaps, resolve alerts accurately, and record whether unauthorized activity was confirmed, not observed within the available evidence, or still indeterminate.
“When you receive an alert, rotate the affected credential immediately to prevent unauthorized access.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an audit log tell me exactly what data an attacker read?
Usually not by itself. Audit records identify authentication and actions, while the accessed content may require repository history, API response logging, object-storage access logs, database telemetry, or provider-specific data-access records. Treat an authenticated request as evidence of capability and activity, not automatic proof of a particular file or record being exfiltrated.
What if the exposed token belonged to a former employee or deleted account?
Identify the credential itself rather than relying only on the current account state. Revocation remains necessary, and historical events may retain the actor, token hash, or integration identity after the account changes. Coordinate with the organization owner or enterprise administrator if your current role cannot retrieve the required historical records.

Should I notify users whose repositories were accessed?
Follow your organization’s incident-response, privacy, and contractual rules. The decision depends on the actor, repositories, data classification, confirmed actions, and whether personal information or regulated data was involved; the audit timeline and provider evidence should support that assessment.
