A credible gender-bias audit needs a repeatable sample, not a striking example. Define what you will measure, run a predeclared prompt matrix at fixed settings, preserve every output, and have independent reviewers code both who appears and how they are depicted. Compare the results with a documented, geographically appropriate benchmark; report uncertainty, missing or unknown labels, and intersectional differences. Then rerun the same test after model, policy, or prompt changes. This approach works for still images, video, generated captions, and an end-to-end publishing workflow, while avoiding the unsafe assumption that appearance reveals anyone’s gender identity.
What does a gender-representation audit measure?
An audit measures two related but different forms of bias. Keeping them separate prevents a model from appearing fair on headcounts while still portraying one group with less agency or more sexualization.
Representational bias
This is about who appears and in what roles: the number of people shown, apparent occupational role, seniority, agency, and whether people are absent from particular prompts. For example, count how often a doctor is depicted as a woman, man, nonbinary person, or unknown, rather than assuming the result from one image.

This concerns how people are shown: camera angle, body position, facial expression, clothing, styling, emotional tone, sexualization, and whether a person is acting or merely observing. A balanced count can coexist with women being framed as passive or smiling while men are shown leading an action.

Identity is not readable from pixels
Gender identity cannot be reliably inferred from facial features, body shape, clothing, or voice. Use “unknown” or “not visible” when self-identification is unavailable, and use a nonbinary/other category only where the person’s self-description or the test design supports it. Describe labels as visual proxies that carry reviewer assumptions, not as facts about the people depicted.
How should I define the audit scope before generating anything?
Write a short scope statement before you see results. It should identify the system and the decision the audit is intended to inform.
- System: generator or media pipeline, model and version if known, safety or policy configuration, and any editing, upscaling, captioning, or publishing tools.
- Place and time: target geography, audience, audit date, and the date range represented by any comparison data.
- Unit of analysis: generated pixels, edited images, video scenes, captions, or the complete workflow shown to users.
- Constructs: presence, role, agency, camera treatment, expression, clothing, and sexualization. State which are representational and which are presentational.
- Decisions and thresholds: what disparity would trigger investigation, a prompt or policy change, a model change, or an independent review.
Keep an untouched holdout set outside the development loop. It gives you a fresh check after remediation instead of letting repeated testing teach the model or the reviewers what to expect.
How do I build a prompt matrix that can estimate bias?
Use the same, predeclared prompts for every model version or system configuration. Balance role categories and include neutral controls so that a result is not simply an artefact of wording.
Choose prompt cells
- Occupations: include male-coded, female-coded, and mixed or non-stereotyped jobs. Include the occupations that matter to your product, such as doctor, engineer, nurse, teacher, executive, caregiver, and construction worker.
- Everyday roles: add parenting, leadership, domestic work, leisure, and public-space scenes.
- Controls: use wording that does not specify gender, plus explicitly specified male, female, mixed, and nonbinary references where the system supports them.
- Intersections: add age, race or ethnicity, disability, culture, language, and socioeconomic setting when those attributes are relevant. A single overall percentage can hide severe disparities within one intersection.
Freeze the generation plan
Record the exact prompt text, number of generations per cell, randomization or seed rule, aspect ratio, resolution, safety settings, negative prompts, and exclusion rules. Decide in advance how refusals, corrupted files, duplicate outputs, and post-processing will be handled. Do not silently replace an output that is difficult to label.
A practical matrix might contain 20 occupations, four gender-reference conditions, two age bands, and two racial or ethnic contexts. The exact size depends on risk and resources; what matters is that every cell has a declared sample size and the same procedure is used across systems.

How many outputs do I need, and how do I preserve them?
There is no universal minimum that makes an audit valid. Small samples can reveal obvious failures but produce unstable percentages; formal comparisons require enough outputs per cell to estimate rates and uncertainty. Report counts as well as percentages, flag sparse cells, and avoid ranking models on tiny differences.

- Run the complete prompt matrix on the exact model and version under test.
- Save the original file, prompt, system and policy settings, seed (when available), timestamp, model identifier, output identifier, and any post-processing operation.
- Hash or otherwise identify files so that later edits cannot be confused with originals.
- For video or multimodal media, define a frame and scene-sampling rule before review. Retain temporal context so a single frame does not misrepresent who acts, speaks, or controls a scene.
- Separate development outputs from the untouched validation or holdout set.
Version the model, prompt template, safety policy, and date together. AI behavior can change when a provider updates weights or filters without changing the product name.
What should a reviewer code in each image or scene?
Create the codebook before viewing the sample. Each field needs an operational definition, allowed values, and an “unknown,” “not visible,” or “not applicable” option.

Have at least two independent reviewers label a subset or the full sample. Adjudicate disagreements with a documented rule and retain the original labels. Report inter-rater agreement and disagreement rates; a low agreement rate is evidence that a construct or codebook needs revision, not a reason to hide uncertainty.
Include reviewers with relevant professional knowledge and lived experience. Community input can identify harms that a purely technical review misses, especially for nonbinary people, disabled people, and groups represented through culturally specific clothing or roles.

What benchmark should I compare the outputs with?
Choose a benchmark that matches the question, and document its year, geography, population, collection method, inclusion rules, and uncertainty. A benchmark is a reference distribution, not a universal definition of fair gender representation.

The 2024 Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication study “Smiling women pitching down” analysed 15,300 DALL·E 2 images across 153 occupations, using 2021 U.S. Census labour statistics and Google Images as benchmarks. It reported underrepresentation of women in male-dominated occupations, overrepresentation in female-dominated occupations, and evidence of amplification relative to those benchmarks. Those findings are specific to DALL·E 2, its prompts, and the 2021 U.S. comparison; they do not establish the same rates for every current generator.
An Australian eSafety Commissioner guide reported a separate study of 99 images from nine text-to-image generators: professionals were represented as men in 76% of images and women in 8%, while doctors were represented as women in 7%. Treat those figures as a small, secondary report, not a prevalence estimate for all systems.
How do I calculate and visualise disparity?
For every prompt cell, publish the numerator, denominator, rate, and unknown or missing count. Then compare the model rate with the benchmark rate rather than relying on one overall average.

- Representation rate: count of outputs containing the coded category divided by valid outputs in the cell.
- Benchmark gap: model rate minus the corresponding benchmark rate, with the benchmark’s year and geography beside it.
- Relative representation: model rate divided by benchmark rate, used only when the benchmark rate is nonzero and its uncertainty is understood.
- Unknown rate: outputs that cannot be responsibly coded; a high rate can itself indicate a visibility problem.
- Uncertainty: use confidence or credible intervals appropriate to the sampling design, and mark cells too sparse for a stable estimate.
Plot representation and presentation separately. Break charts out by occupation and intersection, not only by gender overall. Include model-version comparisons with identical prompts and seeds or randomization rules. Do not turn a statistically detectable difference into a claim of social harm without examining the images, codebook, benchmark fit, and affected communities’ interpretation.
How can I stress-test a finding?
A finding is more credible when it survives reasonable changes in wording, language, data, and review.
- Add edge cases, ambiguous roles, counter-stereotypical prompts, multilingual versions, and adversarial phrasing.
- Test nonbinary references where the system supports them, while recording refusals and cases in which the requested identity is not visibly represented.
- Run a second dataset or fresh generation batch without changing the protocol.
- Recheck false positives, labeling disagreements, duplicate images, and policy refusals.
- Ask whether a safety filter or prompt template, rather than the model’s learned associations, caused the observed pattern.
UK Information Commissioner’s Office guidance calls for accurate, complete, and representative datasets, labelling of blind spots and biases, analysis of rare “edge cases,” human review, new-data testing, and regular monitoring for drift. Australian Government AI Technical Standard Statement 19 similarly calls for measuring representativeness, separating training from validation and testing data, managing demographic and intersectional bias, and documenting data use and bias incidents.

How should I report, remediate, and monitor the audit?
Publish enough detail for another team to reproduce the result and understand its limits.
Include these report sections
- Scope, intended use, geography, date, model/version, policy configuration, and media pipeline.
- Prompt matrix, generation settings, sample frame, holdout design, exclusions, and file-identification method.
- Codebook, reviewer qualifications, adjudication process, agreement statistics, and lived-experience consultation.
- Benchmark source, year, geography, collection method, category mismatches, and uncertainty.
- Counts, rates, disparity measures, unknowns, sparse cells, visualisations, and representative examples with privacy safeguards.
- Limitations, refusal behaviour, edge cases, and a clear statement about what the results do not establish.
Choose a remediation path
Depending on the harm, options include changing prompt templates or product defaults, improving training or evaluation data, adjusting model or policy behaviour, adding user-facing disclosure and provenance, or commissioning an independent fairness audit. Record the owner, expected effect, and review date for each action.
Repeat the protocol after model or weight updates, safety-policy changes, prompt-template changes, or a shift in the target population. Preserve the original test set and audit trail so improvements cannot be claimed merely because the test changed.

Legal obligations depend on jurisdiction, role, and content category, so an audit should record those variables instead of making a global compliance claim. The European Commission AI Act Service Desk states that Article 50 transparency obligations for AI-generated content apply from 2 August 2026. Check the applicable rule for your deployment and include provenance, labelling, and disclosure checks where relevant.
Disclosure testing is distinct from gender-bias testing: a system can disclose that media is synthetic while still depicting gender unfairly. Keep both result sets in the same governance record without merging their metrics.
What is the difference between a quick check and a formal audit?
A quick check is useful for finding directional signals; a formal audit supports decisions that affect people or public claims.

Use the formal path when outputs influence hiring, education, healthcare, public information, or other high-impact contexts; when disparities are material; or when you intend to make a public fairness claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I audit a model with only 10 or 20 generated images?
You can use a tiny set as an exploratory warning system, but its percentages are unstable and should not be presented as population estimates. Keep the result directional, expand the sample by prompt cell, and report every count and unknown.
Should I ask the image model to generate specific genders to test fairness?
Use both gender-specified and gender-neutral prompts. Specified prompts test whether the system follows an instruction; neutral prompts reveal default associations, so treating either set alone as the model’s overall behaviour is misleading.
How do I audit gender bias in generated video rather than still images?
Define a frame and scene-sampling rule before review, retain the surrounding temporal context, and code who speaks, acts, leads, and receives attention over time. A single representative frame can miss a role reversal or a person whose agency appears only briefly.
What should I do when reviewers disagree about a person’s gender?
Do not force a binary label. Preserve each independent label, use unknown or not visible when identity is not established, adjudicate with a written rule, and report the disagreement as a limitation of the construct and the visual evidence.
When should an outside fairness auditor review the results?
Escalate when disparities affect a high-impact use, persist across fresh data or intersections, or remain unresolved after internal remediation. Independent review is also appropriate before publishing comparative claims about competing models.
